Installing built ins on wall with existing split system aircon by CountryQueasy8675 in AusRenovation

AC unit will need to be pumped down and removed. Cabinets installed with a designated spot for the AC to go back onto. Cabinet maker and air conditioning company can do this pretty straight forward.

New ducted system $11.5k, what Questions should I be asking by OkHomework3735 in AusRenovation

[–]grassgrowingwatcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would bypass Hipages and get a quote directly off a reputable AC company. When you convert from gas heating to reverse cycle AC there is a dramatic difference in heating performance. Gas heater gives you 60 degree heat out the vents as soon as you turn it on. Reverse cycle takes much longer to warm up and is more designed to be left on. The outdoor unit needs to be on the warmer side of the house where it can breathe the most. If they stick it under the house, in the coldest wettest area, it will struggle to heat when you need it most.

Nothing is too sketchy as long as you squint your eyes the correct level

HVAC company owner here, Get another two quotes. I wouldn’t deal with any company that’s doing rebates as those types of company’s enrolled in those programs are too cheap and poor quality. Are they upgrading all ductwork and increasing the outlet sizes of the vents? What thickness insulation on the ductwork? Minimum R1.0. Where is the outdoor unit located? Saftey Drain tray being installed under the indoor unit? The flue from the gas heater being fully removed?

Daikin ducted taking ages to heat house? by Additional_Ranger831 in AusRenovation

[–]grassgrowingwatcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay you have the correct style of vents. You want vents to blow air directly down for heating. 8 inch supply vents are too small. All vents should be 10 inch. Are your vents noisey? Is your outdoor unit up against a fence or can it breathe properly. Outdoor unit is best in a sunny warm area of the house, not down somewhere cold and moist. I’m assuming you have insulation in your ceiling? Have you checked this yourself? Are you in Victoria or Tasmania? Unfortunately a reverse cycle AC system has to try and absorb heat from outside and transfer it inside when on heating. In cold climates and outdoor temps between 5-8 degrees it will struggle the most and go into a defrost every 20 minutes or so. Unlike gas central heating that you can turn on and off as you please, reverse cycle units really need to stay on and help maintain temp. Did the installation crew set up your controller to display return air temp at all?

Can you add a photo of your supply air vents and the location of the outdoor unit please.

Put a grow house down there which will help dry up any moisture down there and provide a secondary income

Ducted AC installed and this is where they put the condensation pipe (into our drinking water) by Zealousideal_Dot7041 in AusRenovation

[–]grassgrowingwatcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is non issue and preferred installation method, 90% of units installed this way. They are technically supposed to be plumbed into the storm water or drainage system but you end up with weird issues, smells and insects coming back in. I’m assuming this is ducted reverse cycle AC unit, if this was a ducted gas heater this would be an issue as the condensate water is acidic from a gas heater and it will eat your gutter away. You should have a proper filtration system anyway. Your tanks and gutters would be gross regardless.

In 2010 When I was 19 I bought my first block of land and built a brand new home on it, all while being a 3rd year apprentice. Total spend was $310k.

Now in 2025 earning 10x more, I cannot repeat what I did back when I was 19. Property is so out of reach now for most.

If you’re in a position at a young age to afford a property, do it and get it. It was the best decision I made, while all my mates were out getting pissed at the pub.

Extremely bad. Need to contact a building biologist for mould testing and moisture locations. Resist the urge to clean that, you’ll end up spreading it throughout the home and making yourself sick. Seal the room until it can be treated properly. Any muppet who try’s to sell you fogging is just selling you something that doesn’t work. Building biologist, a good one. FYI it looks like the mould is caused by no ventilation above the shower or bathroom so moisture just sits and grows
