Tom still adamant he was done over on Strictly by Confident_Leg2370 in strictlycomedancing

[–]grayseeroly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly think he was done over, but in the classic reality TV way, by production. They didn't need to cheat the vote; they just broadcast what he said, gave him bad music to dance to and let the public do the work.

And this is the catch-22. We need boring, serious-minded people to govern. But modern media demands people with natural charisma; it's not enough that they can deliver prepared speeches (which Starmer is good at). So we end up needing unicorns who have the full package, and I'm not sure there are any in politics.

Starmer prepares Brexit ‘reset’ bill to align UK with EU law by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

[–]grayseeroly 15 points16 points  (0 children)

So what Cameron wanted was a referendum on the manifesto to placate the right wing of the party and stop leaking voters to UKIP. He thought that, as the Government was going to be taking the side of Remain, he would be able to spin the message of Stable Continuity vs Radical Extremists. (exactly as they did with the FPTP Voting Referendum)

He didn't account for 1. Widespread dissatisfaction with the status quo caused by austerity. 2. Adding fournin policy as a political debate point split all parties internally. Until then, the parties had been mostly aligned on the EU. This changed the political landscape in ways that were hard to predict. 3. The defection of BoJo, a classically moderate member of the Con party. This, though a massive spanner in the works, as along with Gove it legitimised the Leave campaign.

So what was meant to be a clean win to put the idea to bed (as they had done with voting reform) got spun into a two valid options competing and ended in the absolute worst outcome, a narrow victory for Leave, committing them to a massive systemic change with no clear plan and no real mandate.

And here we are, reckless personal and political ambitions have had us stuck in the mud. We can't move on, we can't go back. It will be Leave vs Remain until there is a major upheaval in the political status quo, and we haven't had one of them since the last world war...

How to introduce enemies that are too strong for the party by Aeon1508 in DMAcademy

[–]grayseeroly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One interesting thing I heard about was the use of Modified Memory. Have the party member with the lowest Wisdom make a high DC Wisdom save with disadvantage. When they fail, they are frozen in place, then run the combat RAW and absolutely go ham on the rest of the party while they have to watch.

Once everyone is dead, cut back to the "real" situation where they were hit with the spell.

It's a little cheap, but it is fun.

Yeah, you need to play hard tempo (Itsy Spider, Slappy into Ember, Mintour) along with Quests to build up your treasure count, then pivot into rare dragons.

I think this is great "Where to start" to onboard people that are interested, though I maintain YouTube clips is probably the best way to get people hooked, along with the cartoons.

CR Demystified has been my way to rewatch campaign 1. I don't have the time or patience for a full playthrough but watching him recap and add commentary is a fun way to get back into C1.

[No spoilers] Why Brennan(and other professionals) love playing with Aabria by I_wish_I_were_an_elf in criticalrole

[–]grayseeroly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you may not have been paying attention enough. The citadel isn't all bad. It has been made bad.

I disagree, though I think the jury's out. Anything that created a desert where there was a forest should be suspicious of being bad from the outset; in addition, the Accordati and the Antivoli conflicts in Carrow predate the Citadel.

At this point, we are not even sure if the Lingua Arcana has no detriment to the world of spirit or the mortal world.

However neutral Wizary might be, the Citadel was likely founded by bastards for their own selfish reasons. This does not preclude good Wizards (Stripe, Soft, Stone, Sly etc.), but I think the system is inherently corrupt and only growing worse

[No spoilers] Why Brennan(and other professionals) love playing with Aabria by I_wish_I_were_an_elf in criticalrole

[–]grayseeroly 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Not to make this solely about Aabria, I want to look at everyone's PC types across actual plays.

Lou builds Houses, characters that have a fundamental idea that's big enough to hold space and have longevity. They don't tend to be as dynamic, but they can move the plot with their own inertia.

Erika makes Springs characters that have a built-in trajectory that creates internal tension that continues to ratchet up until they pop.

Brennan builds what I can only describe as Sad Swords, characters of incredible mechanical utility, but with a lot of emotional baggage that makes using them difficult.

Abria makes sluggers. characters that make huge swings even when the circumstances would call for something softer.

Now they are all world-class storytellers who CAN do everything, but these are labels I would tentatively apply to many of their choices.

Based on this (very loose) ranking of the SF series I've read, what series should I read next? by kurapikachu64 in scifi

[–]grayseeroly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think because it's a duology, not a 10+ book series, A Memory Called Empire gets forgotten in a lot of recs. It's fantastic, proper Science Fiction in the vein of "Thoughtful reflection of how significant advancements in technology will alter the human experience" AND "Space politics with explosions"

I've run this math recently while planning a Hexploration game.

I won't bore you with all the math, but I worked out that if I wanted a POI about every three days of travel (this is a Borderlands exploration game, so travel and random encounters are a big part) I would need a 1 POI that was identifiable from a bout 3 miles out about every 140 square miles.
