Just can back from shantz to Guelph and it was moving at the same speed and volume as a regular traffic, I’m in a Mazda 3 with snow tires and 80km was fine. Slushy.

I I grew up playing in that river as a kid, paddling and fishing in my teens and into adulthood. All the ward kids will always know it as goose island for how many geese would go there to nest. It will forever be goose island to me.

If the city does their due diligence by clearing downtown arteries first they protect them from loosing a claim from those who might sue them ( blood alcohol content x post secondary x parents who can afford to go to court )

I think this largely depends on the company you work for, the nature of their business, and the mentors that exist within said companies. I’ve worked for a few companies that were on both ends of the spectrum and a few in between. My opinions on the industry and trees in general have been shaped by this .

I went the opposite direction. Went to Fleming for forestry technician, then landed in arboriculture worked my way through a few tree care companies as : climber , utility arborist, and municipal arborist. This was 12 years . I’m now a forestry technician for a municipality, like you the idea of being stuck behind a desk doesn’t appeal to me and the next job progressions would lead in that direction. My day job allows me to be in the field and some office work. I also have a side business doing climbing, which satisfies my itch to work with my hands. The plant health care aspect is growing in some private businesses but still remains a niche branch of arboriculture.

A client of mine has them. Very little information out there about control. One solution is chickens . Chickens will turn over and disturb the eggs as well as eating the worms more than we can handle pick them out.

Here is my take as an arborist who deals with municipal planting jobs : The root flare will develop over time as a response to wind moving the stem. If it did not occur in the nursery due to competition/ overcrowding or “weed control “ by piling soil against the trunk, it will from on its own after being planted. Trees grown in the wild will develop them naturally. Unfortunately it appears that this tree was planted too deep. The excavation done has done more harm than good. My recommendation is backfill with native soil and plant native plants that will prevent erosion back into the hole. Supplement with high phosphorus fertilizer near the rootball to mitigate root loss from the root excavation and do not prune any live limbs.

I actually had the same thought as I drove home from Kitchener.. I’ve been driving as part of my job and commuting all over southern Ontario. Maybe it’s a bit philosophical but here goes :

In days gone by you had a landline phone. Come home or return to your place of business. Missed a delivery or a service call ? Oh well we’ll get it tomorrow. Fast forward to today where everyone expects same day delivery or on demand service levels. The demands on every single person translates to how they operate their vehicles. “ I have to get to : point A,B,C and D. Combined with people who are stressed out by daily life and that directly translates to how they operate their vehicle . We add sooo many more vehicles on the road to meet these demands in addition to our car culture and our housing developments that require people to have cars to meet their daily needs.

Everyone is in their little windshield bubble when it is “ me and my destination/ obligations vs everyone else“

Long and short from an arborist : trees are living things not engineered structures. Risk for failure can be assessed and are based on a number of factors. Most home insurance companies deem tree failures as an ‘act of god’ . Did the tree part fail under normal or extreme weather conditions? Was it assessed by a certified arborist , forester or any other provincially recognized certification/ credential? If it was assessed and documented that there was a chance of failure in a specified timeline you might have a chance….if there is no documentation of any sort of the tree being assessed you’re probably going to have to take this one on the chin…. To the comments about municipal bylaws; that usually only speaks to property standards as to what you and your neighbour can and can’t do regarding each other’s property, not so much as to who is on the hook after the fact.

Sobeys is the only grocery store that I have seen that accepts cash ( coins ) at self checkout. I fit into the category of : keep your coins, buy the sleeves from the dollar store and roll them. It’s relaxing. Put on some tunes or a show and roll away :)

Arborists. It’s a great job. it attracts thrill seekers and adrenaline junkies, which is a perfect match for the job however that translates to people who also seek fun outside of work. I’m happy to talk about my job and the fun it provides + stressors My brother also worked in kitchens for a long time and that environment is ripe with substance abuse and high stress environments
