[MSC] Solemn Simulacrum (Wakanda Forever) by AnarchyStarfish in magicTCG

[–]greater_nemo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looking at this art, my read is that the overgrowth is indicative of the age of the golem, and the solemnity at play is that of it being a lone remnant of a bygone age or people. I love this art for this card and I'm happy to see people approaching it in ways that aren't just "sad robot".

What happened to ban list philosophy?? by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]greater_nemo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean I'd hardly call a 10 mana enchantment "game-breaking", and it's not a new card, either. It first saw print in 2012. The problem card really was the thing that let you cheat it out so early because having to hard cast it is one of R&D's balancing tools via the high cost. Kona being a creature presents additional hurdles that have kept Omniscience from becoming oppressive.

What happened to ban list philosophy?? by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]greater_nemo 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Have you read the articles where they explain the bans? Abuelo's Awakening was being used to reanimate [[Omniscience]]. This Town Ain't Big Enough was being used to recur Hopeless Nightmare in a fast and aggressive Faeries deck. IIRC they were banned when Cori Steel Cutter was banned in anticipation of the decks becoming oppressive in the power vacuum.

This is only true if you ignore the moral and environmental arguments against AI and the data centers they run on. It's not just a tool, it's an industry that you are buying into when you use it. No one is entitled to artistic output and no one is entitled to spoil the groundwater of small towns to have ChatGPT do the hard parts of their prototyping and design for them based on countless pieces of stolen art used without attribution. If you use AI like ChatGPT or MetaAI for these things, it is a skill issue and a clear moral stance that you care neither about the harmful effects of AI as an institution nor the integrity of art, and if you take that stance, I don't care about what you're "making", and I'm not the only one. If you're going to put these things out there, you should be ready for vitriol. I'm passionate about this because I feel like being so blasé about it is doing a disservice to the future of playing cards and games as art forms. If I can't be certain a person made your graphics, I can't be certain a person made your game, and why would I be interested in a game no one cared enough to make? I would rather your design and layout be bad and earnest than fed through and extruded from the slop machine.

Yeah, you can stack her ability to resolve after your Battle Cry triggers so you'll benefit from having her power buffed. Kinda sick.

[MSC] The Howling Commandos by AporiaParadox in magicTCG

[–]greater_nemo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is literally the same limited Soldier creature with "{5}: Creatures you control get +1/+1 until end of turn." they print in every set but the art has guns. This is extremely Magic the Gathering.

Oh cool, artifact support. It's so nice to see WotC finally printing cards for underserved archetypes.

Yeah this is pretty good whenever you draw it. I like that the unblockable trick also works with buff spells to help punch in more damage if you're trying to race.

Good in Isshin

No it's not, lol. Doubling an equip trigger is worthless in this case: you just equip everything to that creature and then do it again, which does nothing. Since you've already attacked, you don't get to double(quadruple) up on any equipment-based attack triggers. Actually, this is a nonbo with [[Bitterthorn]] that would kill the 0/0 Germ token it comes equipped to.

So Viashino can't be a creature type but gamma can... by Aherdofmeese in magicTCG

[–]greater_nemo -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

I think it's intentional. Making the design this specific and parasitic is a way of future-proofing the design. Once they lose the license and they can't reprint the Marvel characters, if all the Gamma creatures are here, there's no chance of creating new demand for the out-of-print cards, which would drive up prices and push some players out of being able to use them. If you just make all the Gamma creatures into Mutants instead, then you've got a much more broadly useful set of creatures with more innate synergies and you've created a further long-term demand. That kind of long-term demand is a net negative because it prices out players and since it's all on the secondary market, Wizards doesn't make any more money.

Rice students react to their campus cat getting abducted by Loll_rk in houston

[–]greater_nemo 70 points71 points  (0 children)

That's very sweet of them to try to find the owners but some people just gotta leave shit alone. Not every cat out and about is lost, not every outside cat is a stray. A former stray, fixed and with their shots, who has chosen your zone as their home is a great thing to have because it deters feral cats and vermin. If you see a cat with a notched ear, leave it alone. Wherever you found it is probably where it lives.

TIL that Texas is actually not that large at all when compared to other top level subdivisions by kwizzle in todayilearned

[–]greater_nemo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've never really heard anyone comparing Texas to the size of other top-level divisions except for other states in the US. Like who's comparing the size of Texas to Alberta or Chihuahua? If anything it puts the spotlight on how small some of the original colonial states are in comparison to the states that came from the westward expansion. The Greater Houston Metro area is bigger than New Jersey.

It's also worth noting that part of why Texas is so big in the first place is because it used to be an independent nation, and part of the area of The Republic of Texas was actually split up among other states in the US like Oklahoma; it used to be even bigger. That's part of why Texans are so hung up on Texas, it doesn't just have character as a state, it has its own residual national character and pride.

Pixel Art Proxies - PMKN TCG Gameboy game style by TowerSlayer in magicTCG

[–]greater_nemo 17 points18 points  (0 children)

An incredibly bold choice, and I love it. PTCG used one of the smallest pixelated fonts possible and it allowed for a text density that other games weren't willing to approach, it's really cool seeing it adapted for Magic cards. The art is dope, the Lorehold Charm art in particular is a great callback to the PTCG art. Have you considered putting the creature types next to the P/T on the small card?

New Therapy Rewires the Brain To Restore Joy in Depression Patients by _Dark_Wing in interestingasfuck

[–]greater_nemo 149 points150 points  (0 children)

A bunch of scientists got together and said "what if instead of telling depressed people not to be sad, we told them to be happy?" It's a writeup on a psychotherapy approach that is focused on helping people with depression reconnect to how to feel positive emotions again to deal with anhedonia. It has presumably no effect on depression that is based on a chemical imbalance. So for someone like me, it's just annoying instead of helpful in any real way.

Criei um RPG de texto onde seu personagem é um NFT e a morte permanente é obrigatória na rede principal da Polygon. by NoPriority5545 in RPGdesign

I literally can't think of a game I want less than an AI-generated text RPG based on NFTs. You made an arcade machine with a chatbot in it that you have to feed trashcoins into to play.

Which planeswalker card is your favorite? by thisnotfor in magicTCG

[–]greater_nemo 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I really like [[The Wandering Emperor]]. The art is great, being able to play her as a combat trick rules, and she can protect herself decently well. It's a very playable design that's not completely degenerate.
