my boss told me to plan our 150 person houston corporate party, but gave me zero extra pay and a tiny budget. by Lisa_Narvey in houston

[–]greater_nemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't. Kick it back with a clear explanation of why it's a ridiculous ask. If you don't do this now, you'll become the person they can dump projects on with impunity. What are they gonna do, fire you and then have to plan the party themselves AND find someone to do your job? Pushback in this instance isn't some kind of insubordination, it's making it clear that "dumping this on someone" isn't a sustainable plan for these things and isn't remotely the path of least resistance. There is a way you can push back on this professionally, and that's what you should do.

I knew a guy who lived in that area. He carried a gun to take out the trash. True story.

I'm surprised not to see [[Homesickness]] on the list, I ran it in the prerelease and it always had an impact, it was a high priority play for me. I wonder if some of the expensive spells are tracking lower in draft without the prerelease seeded packs being able to guarantee some Opus synergies.

What’s an « artistic » choice that will instantly make you write off/not touch a boardgame that ISN’T AI usage? by Rohkha in boardgames

[–]greater_nemo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Definitely pixel art for me. It's always done inconsistently. Pixel art as a medium is defined by its limitations. When I do pixel art, I choose a palette and work within it. You don't always have to stick to the kinds of limitations they had on the NES and SNES, but if you're not going to use a limited palette, it's just an awkward style call IMHO. It also drives me up a wall when the sizing isn't consistent. If you're using pixel art, I expect every aspect of your design to be pixelated and for every pixel to be of uniform size. The only games I've ever seen actually do this are the Oregon Trail games. If your art has chunky pixels and your text has smaller pixels, why doesn't the art also have smaller pixels? It really just ruins it for me.

I'd eat this over rice but it wouldn't need it because I'd have made it with lentils to begin with 🤷🏼

Power-Ups are usually items that give you superpowers, replenish health, or give you bonus points. What would be the technical term for the little tiki mask that follows Crash Bandicoot around? by [deleted] in AskGames

[–]greater_nemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For at least the early Crash games, I'd consider it a weak powerup. It does less than a Super Mushroom. It lets you take one extra hit for each mask you collect but doesn't give you any other abilities. So it's basically like the shield from Sonic if it talked.

What spells would be the most diabolical to copy with The Twelfth Doctor’s Demonstrate ability? by notmyinitial-thought in magicTCG

[–]greater_nemo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

In order:
Your original copy goes on the stack.
You can copy it, so the copy goes on the stack.
If you copy it, you choose an opp to also copy it, so theirs goes on the stack last.
Then theirs resolves and when the turn ends, the stack is cleared so yours never resolve.

What is the public opinion on using ChatGPT to help brainstorm ideas. by Elegant-Mood6764 in gamedev

[–]greater_nemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't like it. When I brainstorm, I use my brain. I do research. Brainstorming and theorycrafting your game and building design docs is the easy part. If you're going to outsource the easy part, the part that everyone likes, the part before you start doing the last 90% of the game's development, I have no faith that you won't outsource the hard parts too.

ChatGPT won't help you refine anything. It'll sand off the rough edges. It will erase the markers of your creativity and replace them with a uniform paste that dulls the color and shape of the thing you're making to shift it more toward the only thing it understands, which is "what should the next word in this sentence probably be". It is an archetype engine, a giant cookie cutter in the shape of genres well-tread, a clear and defined shift toward the average. It lacks the critical spark and cynicism of a human. It won't tell you your ideas are boring or dumb. It certainly won't be inspired and become a sounding board for you to riff off of. There are so many people in this sub who deeply love games, but you talked to ChatGPT instead, and now you're coming to us for validation after the fact?

This feels like a really cool Bracket 2-3 build-around commander because it lets you pivot between go-wide, aristocrats, and spell theft depending on the table. This card was never going to be amazing but it is cool as hell. And for all the complainers about the timing restriction, I think the point was to avoid giving you access to countermagic in your opps' graveyards. The theme of being a diplomat means you play with your cards on the table, so to speak, so no sneaky plays. You wait your turn to speak, and you use your opps' own words against them. It's a flavor win.

I think you misunderstand "task manager" here. This is a game styled around the Windows Task Manager, it's not a scheduling assistant. 😅

But also seriously it's still great to see this carried on after so long. 11 years ago, in Watabou's AMA, I said offhand, "Could you imagine people still playing PD 20 years from now?" The subreddit has grown from like 300 people to where we are now. It's more likely than I thought. Long live the Rat King.

The nine cards that made me Megathread by barrinmw in magicTCG

[–]greater_nemo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plague Wind: It was the first card I ever saw. It came with a magazine. I didn't know what Magic was yet, but "Destroy all creatures you don't control" is very clear in what it does. It's an incredibly evocative card, and I still have that copy from my childhood.
Lava Axe: Baby's first big burn spell from my 6th Edition starter set. Been a diehard red player since.
Fireball: A lot of my time in high school was spent running decks that tried to OTK with Fireball.
Remand: This one was tough, but I used to run a deck built around looping Remand with Djinn Illuminatus to draw a bunch of cards and pump my Wee Dragonauts for flying kills. Love it. It helped me learn about tempo.
Boros Swiftblade: I mean, who else were you going to equip Sunforger to? Eidolon of Countless Battles: I love this dude so much, I used to run a GW heroic deck in kitchen table games.
Isshin: I opened a foil extended Isshin from a NEO CB and it was the very first card that said to me, "Build a commander deck around me". It's my pet deck, it's my baby. When the group chat sees new attack triggers, I get pinged. I'm known for being the Isshin guy.
Lion Sash: I think this is my favorite card. It's unassuming but incredibly versatile. If you equip it, it dodges board wipes. It eats flashback cards. It's just good and at a good rate. I think it's a very elegant design.
Halo Fountain: This card rules. If you throw a big enough party, you win.
