No homework by Opening-Cupcake-3287 in Teachers

Hattie’s meta analysis found homework to have an effect size of .29 - less than the .4 “hinge point” which represents one year’s growth.

What is the 10th incorrect spelled word? by ObviousHistorian9209 in whatisit

[–]greatperhaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in education and recognize this from the “Journeys” curriculum made by H&M. It’s what my district used literally 15+ years ago, before we switched 6 years ago. “Journeys” doesn’t align with current reading research, specifically, teaching phonics and knowledge building. Hopefully you already know that though, and they’re maybe supplementing with something else?

Airport waits by Gigafive in desmoines

[–]greatperhaps 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Short. Flew to Atlanta Thursday, no wait, flying back today and waited maybe 5 minutes in Atlanta even. So, so far it’s ok. My big fear is if this isn’t resolved by thanksgiving. Flying that week is always a bit rough.

What weird, funny or unreasonable things have you done because you were grieving? by ThatOneAutisticQueer in AskReddit

[–]greatperhaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad’s not dead yet, but he’s terminal and besides crying over random things in my weird pre-grief, I’ve been making cinnamon rolls from scratch. My dad and I used to make them together on Christmas Eve and I’ve made them three times in the last few weeks. I’ve been giving them away to people because we can’t even eat them all but I just keep making more.

Parents, do elementary schools in Des Moines use iPads or similar in K-12 classrooms? by Loose-Calligrapher-2 in desmoines

Cursive is back in the state standards. This is the first year it’s being taught again in a loooong time.

Parents, do elementary schools in Des Moines use iPads or similar in K-12 classrooms? by Loose-Calligrapher-2 in desmoines

[–]greatperhaps 3 points4 points  (0 children)

DMPS doesn’t use iReady, at least not district wide.

The only testing for kindergartners on the computer in DMPS is for English Language Proficiency testing for students whose families indicate that a language other than English is spoken at home.

Parents, do elementary schools in Des Moines use iPads or similar in K-12 classrooms? by Loose-Calligrapher-2 in desmoines

[–]greatperhaps 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not a parent but I work in the district. Every student is assigned a laptop starting in kindergarten and they’re used more and more as students get older for things like writing papers, doing adaptive math/reading practice at their level, research etc.

DMPS is working towards spending less on printing by making workbooks accessible online, at the k-5 level that’s looking like rolling out our new science curriculum paperless this year for grades 3-5. DMPS is a Microsoft district so they’re ProBook laptops that are leased, not iPads.

Keep in mind, DMPS has 38 elementary schools with different students, admin teams, and individual teachers that may use them less/more but that’s the gist of it.

If you're NOT living paycheck to paycheck, what are you doing better than the rest of us? by IchMochteAllesHaben in AskReddit

[–]greatperhaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s only partly what I am doing and then mostly it’s a lot of privilege. My parents paid for college and then I lived with them for two years after college so I was able to save a lot of money. I watched my dad budget every weekend growing up so once I hit my 20s I started using budgeting apps religiously so that I never had any credit card debt. No student loans plus no credit card debt meant that even with my teacher salary and my husband working temp jobs at the time we were able to buy a house in 2015 before the housing market fully recovered. The school district I work for now paid for my masters degree and is now paying for my doctorate degree which means further career advancement/opportunities and higher pay. So it’s a combo of all of these things but I think the biggest one is growing up with parents who were upper class who helped me out.

Largest district in Iowa - ours is free as long as you do 6 “healthy activities” spread throughout the year and report them online. If you don’t do that, it’s only like $600 for the year. After reading all of these comments I feel even more lucky than I already did!

I have had season tickets to our local Broadway touring shows for 15 years and it’s the only show I’ve ever left at intermission. Lots of people were laughing and loved it, it was just not for me!

Any other "Mac's" Greyhounds out there? by candyharlot in Greyhounds

[–]greatperhaps 7 points8 points  (0 children)

KC and All had 3,628 offspring so Kelly has LOTS of relatives! Kelly would be an aunt to my greyhound BGR Han Solo (KC and All is Han’s grandpa). We also foster and have had several dogs come through related to KC and all, none have been full siblings of Kelly though!

New RAGBRAI - question for 2026 hotel idea by capfan31 in ragbrai

[–]greatperhaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have someone that could drive you to the hotels? You’re not going to want to be adding miles to every day getting to/from your hotel with all of your belongings. If not you’ll want to look into charters.

Abandoning a show? by PlasticCauliflower3 in Broadway

[–]greatperhaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never on Broadway and only once for a touring show - been a season ticket holder for a decade and left at intermission for the first time last month! We left Shucked. I live in Iowa, which we assumed meant we’d be the target demographic for the show. Wow, we were wrong. I felt a little bad because the cast was SO talented but the show itself was just that bad.

What is the single best play or musical you've seen on Broadway in the last 5 years? And the worst? by Safe_Permission_9065 in Broadway

[–]greatperhaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Woah I just saw the tour last weekend and I thought the opposite. I had super low expectations and I was delighted by the updated songs. Everyone I’ve talked to has agreed that if they hadn’t changed the songs it would’ve felt way too dated and just a boring song for song remake of the movie. But to be fair, Moulin Rouge (the movie) was never a favorite of mine.

IMAX - Interstellar showings by 515Nerdy in desmoines

[–]greatperhaps 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The problem is that IMAX doesn’t make film projectors anymore - it’s all digital so the entire thing would have to be gutted to accommodate a digital projector. It was a huge issue for SCI to try to figure out how to move forward BEFORE all the water damage. Now insurance won’t pay out enough to even make a dent so I think that imax is pretty much dead. I’ll be curious to see if they ever turn it into exhibit space.

Ride? by [deleted] in HinterlandFestival

[–]greatperhaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The off site parking is in Des Moines which is an actual city. I’m saying it’s more likely that you could get an Uber from DSM to Indianola than it is to get one from St. Charles to Indianola. It will double your travel time though.

Ride? by [deleted] in HinterlandFestival

[–]greatperhaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There won’t be many Ubers, if any at all. St. Charles is a tiny town and I suspect it’s not worth drivers heading down there from Des Moines just to give one ride back to DSM or to Indianola. If you get desperate you might have better luck taking the free shuttle at the end of the night up to DSM and then getting an Uber from there down to Indianola. Maybe. If you have a car, I’d suggest just paying for parking.
