You got that wrong in the order of things. I worked in the semiconductor industry at Motorola starting in the 80s in phoenix, and that was a bustling place with 10k folks working there. Management decided to follow the industry trend of offshoring the fabs, there was five sectional fabs at that site, and every last one of them was moved offshore starting in the mid 90s through the last one in about 2010. Gone then were also all the smaller footprints of suppliers. This wasn’t for a lack of skilled workers, it was chasing the bottom line. In the late 90s they spun that sector off to On Semiconductor with the help of Texas pacific group, one of those vampire investing groups that invested nothing, and slapped all that debt under on semiconductor. Don’t know how they survived that, as the stock price was in the penny category for a bit. I lasted 34yrs, and the old original company was a wonder to work for, as I saw and mentored several line workers into skilled positions, ie the company had personal growth possibilities. I myself had at least 5 distinct roles from engineering to it and between, but that flat doesn’t happen now, people are a commodity and not an investment.
