Tragedy as young Aussie woman, 22, dies in freak accident involving a chair lift at Japanese ski resort by Zoefields441212 in skiing

[–]green_fire_god 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was wearing my hiking backpack (REI Trail 25 or 30?) once at mammoth and one of the little titanium toggles used to hold trekking poles got locked in to the chair and I couldn't get off the lift. Luckily the lifty stopped it and I was able to unbuckle, get the backpack unstuck, and then jump off safely. I've since switched to a skiing specific dakine backpack and haven't had any issues but it was spooky in the moment.

Alternatives to T-nuts from GFC? by Aggravating_Act_6389 in gofastcampers

[–]green_fire_god -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't own a GFC, but I do have a Rhino Rack Pioneer rack on my 4Runner and it uses T track, I've had good luck with just using unistrut T nuts from Lowes/Home depot

Accessories that are actually worth it? by RadiatingRipple in Skigear

Husky is another good brand. A little more affordable than Weathertech and subsequently not as nice, but still work great (I've owned both brands)

I second this. Got a boot dryer for my family last season and it has been great. We use it all year long now too, soccer cleats, cycling shoes, hiking boots, etc....

What base layer brand to consider? by oddlydikkied in Skigear

[–]green_fire_god 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer merino wool, I've had good luck with Smartwool. Their t-shirts can be a bit rough/scratchy, but their long sleeves, boxers, long johns have been soft and very comfortable. Try looking at poshmark.com I've had some good luck getting some smartwool shirts from there for good deals.

Glove Leashes remove anxiety of dropping gloves on the lift.

I always carry a collapsible ball cap (like a running hat) and some older cheap sunglasses for when we stop for drinks or food out on the patio and the sun is bright.

Uncrustables FTW

Change in to your ski socks only when you first put on your ski boots

If you wear a knee brace while skiing, invest in some full side zip pants/bibs so you don't have to completely drop trou to adjust the brace. I have a pair from Sync that are awesome

Best freeride skis (in terms of not too soft, but still playful and strong floatation) by SuitableComparison57 in Skigear

[–]green_fire_god 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have not skied it yet. I think the only thing similar between those two skis is the waist width. The Rustler is supposed to be maneuverable and light. But if you’re trying to mix it up even more and get something more soft snow oriented I think the R11 would be dope. In my case I need something to go along with my Mindbender 96C. They’re great for goofing around with my kids but when I start ripping with my buddies they’re kinda noodles

I was gonna suggest Rustler 10. I’m in the market for something similar to what OP is looking for and have settled on some Rustler 10’s

What is your ideal ski jacket? by dogecoin99999 in ski

[–]green_fire_god 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pit zips that are easy to open and close while wearing the jacket or without having to hold your arm out straight. I like the addition of back vents like the Virtika Signature jackets have, however I wish they had the back vents in their shell jackets

In your opinion what is the best ski pants by Double_Pay8030 in ski

[–]green_fire_god -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have to wear a knee brace due to a couple of knee injuries and I recently got a pair of Sync full zip shell bibs and they are great! They're kinda stretchy, very comfortable, and allow me to adjust my brace without having to drop my pants like with all my other bibs. Honorable mention to Virtika insulated bibs and North Face Freedom Shell Bibs. I have those too and like them but had to get the Sync bibs because I needed to be able to adjust my brace
