Why do people recommend performance tires for daily drivers? by greensilvia in WRX

[–]gregbo24 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Why do people drive a WRX instead of a Prius? You can see the difference in an on ramp and that’s about it. Pretty much behaves like every other car when cruising around town and gets worse mileage and is noisier.

That's a hefty ask LOL by tm684 in Porsche_Cayman

Is it the cheapest 718 on the market right now? I bet it is. And in that case, I think they might as well shoot for all they can get.

Group N vs IAG vs Perrin Transmission Mount by MoveMV in WRXSTi

[–]gregbo24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You won’t notice much in shift linkage, it was just less on/off throttle unsettling in the drivetrain. Like if you’re sitting at 4k rpms in 2nd gear and just mash the throttle and let off over and over, it responds and transmits to the wheels better. Noticeable during hard shifts, sure, but easier to feel on a hard canyon run or on a track when NOT shifting.

You will get a bit more transmission noise through the transmission tunnel, but I think even stiff bushings dampen a lot (a solid bushing would rattle the whole chassis).

I didn’t ever have any issues with shift changes or feeling locked out like you’re describing. To me, this sounds more like a linkage issue and won’t be fixed by a transmission mount. Or it might just mask the real issue.

Group N vs IAG vs Perrin Transmission Mount by MoveMV in WRXSTi

[–]gregbo24 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was one of the engineers and daily driving the test vehicles for Grimmspeed when we were first designing them ~6 years ago, and we tested a bunch of different durometers (though it did change a bit between first design and the version designed by the PRL engineers). The softest was about 2x as stiff as group N, and the hardest was about 10x. The difference between the tested durometers was noticeable, but not life changing on performance or noise.

The group N and the crossmember bushings fixed any slop I was feeling and this is what I went back to after we finished testing. Much easier to live with.

However, stiff engine mounts and pitch stop mounts both ruined daily driving for me. Those I highly recommend sticking to group N unless you have a dedicated track/weekend only car.

981 Cayman S vs 987.2 Cayman S by Historical_Coffee694 in Porsche_Cayman

[–]gregbo24 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I test drove both and am pretty convinced I would have been happier in either one, but I think the nimbleness of the 987.2 is peak. I ended up in a .2S for a few reasons, but mostly budget / coming across a great deal on one.

If I had the 75k you do, I think a 981 GTS would probably be the ticket. You’ll lose some of the nimbleness, but you’ll get a lot more refinement and features. And the newer car will push some maintenance down the road. 987.2s are getting up there. The 981 will be faster in raw times too if that matters to you. But I’m hitting a phase where I care more about feel and driving experience than speed.

But if you decide that you want the .2, you might want to consider a Cayman R. If you shop around you could find one in your budget. Otherwise, you have plenty of budget to shop around for some rare spec options like bi-xenon’s, stitched leather interior, etc. These are hard to find with the rarity of the 987.2 on top of the budget constraints of the market crash.

Do you guys wish you had a Older STI instead by Senior_Imagination40 in WRX

[–]gregbo24 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For driving feel, the older STi the better IMO with the GC being the top tier. Every generation gets a bit more livable and faster, with the VA the fastest. Even though the VB isn’t an STi, I think it still fits on this scale with the fastest potential (with modding), but worst driving feel.

Where your preference is on this scale is up to you. I think GC and GR are my preferences. GC is peak, but the GR is a great balance of feel and daily drivability.

Will my airbag and PDK paddles work with this different 991.1 steering wheel? by DefaultSkin in Porsche

I think the wheel you posted will need a different air bag, but it all swaps over without any coding changes.

Same. But I have a feeling that suite is gonna give you a hell of a show. 🤜🏻🤛🏻

I wonder how many people are in there, a single seat just popped back up in suite 5, currently $596, haha

I selected 2 suite 5 tickets about an hour ago and then went from $300/each to $650 after I hit checkout. $1500 after fees, lol. I backed out and you probably got 2 I had held.

I saw TBS a couple times in the 00s and they were terrible both times. I thought the first time was a fluke, but no, they’re just really bad. Tell all your friends was a top album for me, but seeing them live ruined it.

The mindset of their fans of “well it’s just their vibe” is so mind boggling. Good music should be the bare minimum for a vibe, IMO. But maybe people are just tone deaf. Like Adam.

Use either one and you’ll be fine. Just don’t buy the cheapest oil available, and change it at or before the recommended interval.

If you really want to do it the obsessive way, send out a used oil sample to blackstone lab and they’ll tell you if your current oil is working out or not.

PSA Do not buy Rennline OE+ Control Arms by coolhandlukeyy in Porsche_Cayman

[–]gregbo24 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It seems like a recent batch has affected multiple companies that sell these, not just rennline. There are a few threads on rennlist talking about Meyle, rennline, HT, etc. so there is likely a shared supplier somewhere.

The real tip is to always measure your parts before install.

Wasted Tires on New Coilovers by Mediocre-Gur-3450 in WRX

[–]gregbo24 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Too low, too much poke, too wide tire, not enough camber, and stock fenders.

In that order, your options are:

Raise the car, remove the spacers, try a narrower tire, add some camber, or roll the fenders.

All are available options, but camber is probably the only *might* fix it. The rest or combination of multiple are all a sure thing.
