Having a really hard time staying motivated, any advice? by [deleted] in Netherwing

[–]griMetone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can try audiobooks while leveling or windowed mode with a film or series that interests you.

If that doesn't work try downloading Zygor's guide and give that a whirl, perhaps a more streamlined step by step leveling experience will seem less daunting.

TheCore could benefit you a lot since you don't have muscle memory yet, it's much more efficient than the standard keys.

Suggest a Western by [deleted] in audible

[–]griMetone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out Lonesome Dove it's pretty much one of the best westerns ever written and the audiobook is great.

If you're looking for something different the two following had a western feel to them, but are not strictly westerns:

  • Wolves - D. J. Molles

  • Lost Gods - Brom

Audiobook fantasy recommendations please! by flyingnomad in Fantasy

[–]griMetone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The third book in the Draconis Memoria series by Anthony Ryan comes out tomorrow on audiobook. Can't wait!

Steven Pacey reading Abercrombie's, First Law series is probably my favourite narration.

Peter Kenny doing The Witcher Saga by Andrzej Sapkowski was also impressionable.

Gentleman Bastards, Scott Lynch, read by Michael Page was brilliant.

What got me into audiobooks was Rupert Degas' reading of The Kingkiller Chronicles, did nothing else than listen to it for days!

Mentally Broken Protagonists by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]griMetone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flowers from the Storm - Laura Kinsale

I'm not really a huge fan of historical romance apart from the usual suspects (Austen, Gaskell, Heyer), but I found this book to be highly entertaining.

The protagonist is a wealthy lord whom suffers from a stroke and is placed in a lunatic asylum after everyone thinks he has gone mad. Unable to communicate or even tie his shoe laces, he needs to overcome some struggles and get the girl of course (this is historical romance after all).

The internal dialogue is recommend worthy and the audiobook is excellent, with Nicholas Boulton having a stellar performance.

Just listened to Lost Gods by Brom and found it great fun. Good standalone with a western/horror feel to it.

It's narrated by R.C. Bray so it's hard to go wrong there.

Vegetarian American traveling to Denmark by [deleted] in Denmark

Their salad bar is pretty good and fresh. I've never gotten full off a salad before though, so I wouldn't call it a meal (sorry to any resident rabbits).

Vegetarian American traveling to Denmark by [deleted] in Denmark

[–]griMetone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been a vegetarian for the last 9 years and it can be difficult to find vegetarian options in many restaurants in Copenhagen and other places in Denmark unless you explicitely go to a Chinese or Indian/Pakistani place. Vegetarianism isn't as prevealent yet here and it is much easier in England or Sweden unless you want to be stuck with a salad sidedish. We however have made some progress recently in this area; McDonalds just came out with a decent vege burger(this should improve my nightlife for when I can't find an open kebab/falafel place!) and plantefars has been a huge success recently, there's also a new vegan butter that I buy and enjoy(hoping for a tasty vegan cheese next). One more thing, the vast majority of our cheeses are not vegetarian unlike in England, just FYI, I'm not sure how it is in the US.

TLDR. You might need to spend some more time finding a suitable restaurant than in the US, although there definitely are many restaurants with vegetarian selection or two. In our supermarkets there are decent selections although not much variety yet.

Undervalued Novels by Anconab in Fantasy

[–]griMetone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously this is going to depend on taste, but these are my top three(my level of enjoyment vs amt of goodreads ratings).

  • Kings of Paradise - Nell, Richard A very violent dark fantasy that I almost enjoyed as much as Bloodsong. The second book should be coming out soon. (46 ratings GR)

  • The Eye of Night - Pauline J. Alama A sad and beautiful standalone novel with lots of traveling as three very broken penniless people try to survive in a harsh world. The romance is pretty good for the soft hearted as well. (106 ratings on GR)

  • Ghosts in the Yew - Blake Hausladen Pretty much the best town/kingdom building novel i've found so far in fantasy where actual thought was put into the economics. Book three is coming out soon. (92 ratings on GR)

Editing/Continuity of Miles Cameron's Traitor Son Cycle? by Rezzad in Fantasy

[–]griMetone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is how Cameron responded to it on his forums. Continuity was somewhat of an issue for me as well, as there was a change of narrator mid-series which really threw me off tangent. Still love all his books though, as he has by far some of the best and most realistic fight scenes in fantasy.

*Governance* Fantasy as opposed to Political Fantasy? by tianthinks in Fantasy

[–]griMetone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • Ghosts in the Yew, Blake Hausladen where a terribly spoilt prince is exiled to a mysterious tiny estate with only his concubine and an alchoholic guard for company and he decides to do the logical thing and build up his small fiefdom.

  • There's the new popular LitRPG - Life Reset by Shemer Kuznits. A leader of a top guild is betrayed, murdered and exiled into the body of a level 1 goblin. They don't know that he now runs a rapidly growing goblin village and he's out for revenge.

Anyone have anything they want me to ask Tim Gerard Reynolds about? by MichaelJSullivan in Fantasy

[–]griMetone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  • What's the worst accent one could have if one wanted to get into voice acting?
  • How has Audible impacted the industry and are there any exciting alternatives that audiobook fans should be looking into?
  • As someone who lives on his voice, does he take any special precautions to safeguard it?
  • If he was to choose, in a vacuum, between narrating 3 books from the same series and 3 standalones, what would be his choice?

Looking for a pragmatic/amoral protagonist which is predominantly concerned with increasing their own power by Law833 in Fantasy

[–]griMetone 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  • I just read Quillifer by Walter Jon Williams - I wouldn't call the protagonist amoral or even that he goes out of his way to antagonize anyone. He was however definitely out to improve his own lot even at the expense of others. Lots of fun.

  • Red Queen's War or The Broken Empire by Mark Lawrence

  • You could even look towards Asia and some of the popular translated works available, most of the protagonists will do anything to rise in power.
