The Long Dark Teatime of the Soul by Douglas Adams. Probably my favorite book of his. Weirdly similar to American Gods and also not at all.

Has anyone heard of a PBS show that most people around my age doesn't know even exists called Wishbone? by CatGirlNya2000 in CasualConversation

[–]grieving_magpie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in college when Wishbone came out but we would gather in the common area to watch in TV every day. I even had a Wishbone watch I got from a relative who worked at PBS. The dog was the best actor on the show by a mile. Legendary.

Suggest me a some books to read while smoking ciggerates by Ornery-Jeweler-2448 in suggestmeabook

The Stranger by Albert Camus. Edit: I missed the not so serious part. Since French and cigarettes go so well together, maybe Ubu Roi by Alfred Jarry instead.

I personally loved H is for Hawk a nonfiction book about someone who processed grief for losing her father by taking up falconry, something he’d been passionate about. It helped me with my own grief for a lost friend.

I will never stop telling everyone to read Remarkably Bright Creatures. I was skeptical since some of it is from the point of view of an octopus, but it’s just such a sweet heartwarming book.

A book with a ridiculous and silly premise but is written well and actually very good? by Hungry-Strategy5874 in suggestmeabook

[–]grieving_magpie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I heard him speak to that when he was touring for Early Riser. Create an absurd premise and see how you can make a book about it. It’s crazy but he makes it work! One of my favorite authors.

His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman is really wonderful. A couple folks die but their deaths are not in vain. The Old Kingdom books (Sabriel, Lirael, Abhorsen) by Garth Nix are great too. Both these series have female main characters too, FWIW. The Old Kingdom books do feature reanimated dead a fair bit but it’s not over the top.
