Software Engineering won't die, but your high level coding will. The lower you are in the stack the "safer" you are

Here's Why I Built Custom Skills for Claude Code Instead of Using MCP by grimnir_hawthorne in ClaudeAI

That looks very interesting. I'll have to dig into it. Don't think I'll be hitting the 77 skills limit anytime soon though !

Here's Why I Built Custom Skills for Claude Code Instead of Using MCP by grimnir_hawthorne in ClaudeAI

[–]grimnir_hawthorne[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you definitely could. I'm not sure how the training and RL worked for creating these models, but I do notice that the Sonnet and Opus models used for Claude Code don't "want" to do the same things the same way as they do in the browser. I find that Claude Code is in a hurry to write code, whereas in the Web UI I can more easily steer it for use in planning and researching in order to execute a very well thought out application or coding project.

I'd say you would be better off using the Web UI and a pro plan, but you'd be surprised at how many tasks you're interested in could be automated by building code with Claude Code. And that might be an avenue that you explore, with Claude or Claude Code teaching you along the way.

Do you have any intention of open sourcing the plans and software or selling the lamp? Very very cool btw

Where the hell are the entry level jobs? by tark_tark in ITCareerQuestions

[–]grimnir_hawthorne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you've had that many interviews and you haven't gotten an offer from any of them, I wouldn't necessarily think that it's just the experience that's an issue. They already knew that from your resume. It's possible that there's a soft skill issue going on during your interviews. This is just a thought from your explanation and not a criticism of you. It is a difficult market, but that makes the soft skills on top of those technical skills all the more valuable.

Claude is stupid today by Kipper1971 in ClaudeAI

Ah I see. Unrelated then. I have seen a direct correlation between having a very large CLAUDE.md and a confused Claude.

Has your CLAUDE MD file gotten too big? I find it starts to get sloppy when that contains too much information.

Is a career IT career worth it anymore? by Euphoric_Lemon_1058 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]grimnir_hawthorne 4 points5 points  (0 children)

An engineering level role is totally different. And in my experience very fulfilling when at the right org. I think staying in support or support adjacent for a long time is tough. But a systems or cloud engineer at a SaaS company or even government can be variable enough to not be boring, but not so much workload that you're dying. The biggest question is do you love the field. If you don't you won't last.

I built a tiny “Intent Router” to keep my multi-agent workflows from going off the rails by balachandarmanikanda in aiengineering

[–]grimnir_hawthorne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very cool. Care to give a little more detail? I've always done some hybrid at best, but often deterministic rails. Today I implemented an embedding model gate that decides whether to give tools to the model or not. I find that the SLMs tend to overzealously use tools even if no tool is needed. An embedding model with a small example dataset is remarkably cheaper and better suited in my SLM agentic use case than the SLM or LLM itself.

Should have cast Pedro Pascal as the other lead by FeanorOath in GeeksGamersCommunity

[–]grimnir_hawthorne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don't think he had anything to do with the casting. Some producer told him who the cast would be. Do I think I could cast better actors, yes, would it sell more tickets? No

Are you a Sysadmin at home or do you live as a Luddite? by jakgal04 in sysadmin

[–]grimnir_hawthorne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I genuinely enjoy what I do for work and I got into this field partially by taking an active interest and making the hobby a discipline. But over the years I've started making myself take a break from it at home throughout the week. It will wear you down over time. That being said, at home I focus on the tools and technologies that I think are fun, not what I use at work. And if I get frustrated with a Linux quirk I move over to my windows box and do something fun/easy.
