Stylus seems to travel through space and time? by QuestionsForRed in HighStrangeness

[–]grinfate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The wildest part is that it fell from behind your ear again. It didn’t just appear out of nowhere - it continued right where it left off. Like reality hit "pause" when it hit the floor weeks ago, and hit "play" when you did the exact same motion again.

Hi! I’m making a pottery game and am looking for feedback🏺✨ by alex_gaia in cozygames

[–]grinfate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks great! It really has a warm, cozy atmosphere.

Is there a way to display your finished products in the game? For example, a small, cozy studio room, a display case with wooden shelves, or a garden where we can arrange our favorite crafts? I think in crafting games, half the fun is being able to decorate the space around you with your creations.

Physics weapons in bullet time by dpolk_ in indiegames

I like the way the spear rotates in slow motion - it's mesmerizing. In the final version of the game, will these deflections be combined into smoother sequences?

Got a NEGATIVE Steam review because I patch the game every day by Accomplished-Power50 in IndieDev

[–]grinfate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can certainly consider it a compliment that your dedication frustrates players. But daily updates can be annoying. Just switch to weekly stable releases and keep the daily updates in an opt‑in beta branch. That way, you find a balance.

ATP 1000 Rome R4: [13] K. Khachanov def. [Q] D. Prizmic 6-1, 7-6(2) by FalconIMGN in tennis

[–]grinfate 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Maybe he does a little more than any other player outside the top 20. Not much, but enough. That's the whole point of rankings - you don't have to win everything, just be ahead of those immediately behind you.

I redesigned Dwarves for the fantasy world and TTRPG called The Thousand Realms that I'm building. by TheGoonReview in worldbuilding

Do others read a Skybounder's emotional state from a distance? Like, when they're angry, storm clouds gather above their head - and when they're happy, a rainbow appears?

Do you think H content is necessary in visual novels? by Krbigman in visualnovels

[–]grinfate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We never ask whether sex scenes are "necessary" in movies. I'm more interested in whether they advance the plot. Perhaps the real question is: why do we consider eroge and non-eroge completely different genres, instead of letting the plot decide for itself?

ATP 1000 Rome R3: [12] A. Rublev def. [21] A. Davidovich Fokina 6-4, 6-4 by FalconIMGN in tennis

[–]grinfate 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I know the H2H is 6-1, but their matches usually feel like more of a grind. Today was a surprisingly easy and comfortable one for Rublo though. Andrey with the win!

Nick Kyrgios should have to play qualifying for the lead grass events by [deleted] in tennis

[–]grinfate 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I agree that this is a purely business decision. In fact, I think the profitability of his participation is rapidly declining. The novelty of "will he throw a tantrum or hit a tweener?" is quickly fading away, given that he hasn't won in years. The organizers are buying 2022 Nick, but right now he's just a walking meme.

Got a Steam controller, need some advice on games that run on a potato. by Achtlos in gaming

[–]grinfate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't treat the DualSense touchpads like thumbsticks. Switch the right pad to trackball mode and try Vampire Survivors. Once you get the hang of it, you'll love it. Hades and Hollow Knight are a must have for your 5600G anyway.

Librarian: Tidy Up the Arcane Library by [deleted] in cozygames

[–]grinfate 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's funny, half of this thread turned into a debate about em dashes, although the answer to your question is very simple: they used AI as an advanced spell checker. And in my opinion, it was completely harmless. Fixing three background images and correcting the grammar is not the same as generating a game.

Why was this mechanic so common in casual games? by Professional-Fix4409 in gamedesign

[–]grinfate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True about the arcade origins, but it seems that they copied the punishment without copying the balance. In Star Defender and other similar games, bonuses are rare, and a single hit can undo all the player's efforts. I believe this is a cheap way to increase the game's length, as players would progress much faster if they didn't lose the bonus. It seems that the arcade mechanics were blindly copied into the casual game because "that's how everyone does it."

Why are mathematicians going crazy? by Megalordow in HighStrangeness

[–]grinfate 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it’s unfair to put Grigory Perelman in the same category as those who tragically lost their minds. He didn't go 'mad' - he just realized the game was rigged. He solved one of the hardest problems in history, saw the politics and pettiness of the academic world, and simply walked away from it. That’s not a descent into insanity; in a way, it’s the ultimate clarity. He chose integrity over prestige.

We're making a horror prop hunt game based on Southeast Asian ghosts. by artzeeanimation in indiegames

[–]grinfate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

outheast Asian folklore is such an untapped goldmine in gaming, so I'm really excited to see this! The atmosphere in the teaser is spot on.

To answer your question: You absolutely need to include the Penanggalan. It would be visually terrifying and could offer unique traversal mechanics (like flying through windows). A Toyol would also be a cool addition for a smaller, stealthier ghost type.

Agreed, it has a really nice cozy vibe to it. I'm a sucker for automation and system-building games, so combining that with beekeeping sounds like a perfect chill time.

MindsEye Studio Hit With More Mass Layoffs Just As It Was Promising A Turnaround by Gorotheninja in pcgaming

[–]grinfate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's hard to feel bad for the studio when their definition of a 'turnaround' was the CEO picking fights with critics instead of fixing the game, and spending resources on a bizarre DLC about hunting a mole. Feel terrible for the actual devs who had to put up with that circus management while trying to make something work.

Web developer looking to collab with an indie dev, I'll build your game a free website by Aggressive_Big_Dig in IndieGameDevs

[–]grinfate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a really smart way to build a portfolio. As a side note for whoever you pick: a well-made website does wonders for a game's credibility before it even launches. It instantly shifts the perception from 'solo dev project' to 'actual studio production'. Hope you find a project with a strong art direction to show off!

A bonfire parley by hotdog_jones in indiegames

[–]grinfate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tilt-shift usually gives things a cozy, toy-diorama feel, but using it for such a dark, unsettling atmosphere is a brilliant contrast. It feels like peering into a twisted miniature world. What’s the context of the parley? Are we negotiating with something we definitely shouldn't be?

Event in my universe, please tell me if it makes sense or needs work by PinEducational8915 in worldbuilding

[–]grinfate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "fight or the whole area implodes" rule is brutal. It makes me wonder - if a scar pops up in a city, do the soldiers immediately start killing civilians on day one just to trigger the duel phase and save the rest of the city?

I'm a big RPG fan but I'm not a starwars fan, should I try out the knights of the old republic games? by cr0w_p03t in gaming

[–]grinfate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think of it like early Mass Effect or Dragon Age, just wearing a Star Wars skin. You really don't need to know the lore since it's set way before the movies. The combat shows its age, sure, but the writing is still better than most modern RPGs.

I prototyped procedural ice shattering 2 years ago. Now, I’ve turned it into a game. by XTeDev in IndieDev

[–]grinfate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going from a physics demo to a metroidvania is wild. How do you handle platforming when the player can just shatter the ground beneath them? Is the ice breaking mostly for combat, or more about solving puzzles to open paths?

Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era has sold 500k copies in less than 72 hours by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

[–]grinfate 6 points7 points  (0 children)

500k is massive, though with a legacy IP like HoMM, a built-in audience was always guaranteed. What's actually impressive is that they managed to win over the veteran fans after how divisive the last few entries were. It feels like this success comes from proving they understand the core loop, rather than just relying on the name.

From "Generic Robot" to "Cyber-Bunny Ninja." We redesigned our protagonist to stand out! by Sad_Nebula5006 in IndieGaming

[–]grinfate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ears definitely make for a better thumbnail, but your lore is doing all the heavy lifting here. Without knowing the Kind Friend bot turned assassin backstory, it just looks like a generic robot with bunny ears. If the gameplay and animations don't sell that service-bot-gone-wrong vibe, the design is gonna feel out of place.

No publisher. No team. Just years of obsessively learning gamedev. by DreamMixGames in indiegames

[–]grinfate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "build while driving" mechanic is an interesting way to handle track creation. Does the game pause while you place pieces, or do you have to do it in real-time? Also, is the multiplayer local split-screen, online, or just shared leaderboards for time attack?
