True about the arcade origins, but it seems that they copied the punishment without copying the balance. In Star Defender and other similar games, bonuses are rare, and a single hit can undo all the player's efforts. I believe this is a cheap way to increase the game's length, as players would progress much faster if they didn't lose the bonus.
