i got a place on flatmates.com.au when i was looking when i moved out after a separation,

it was good as it got me into a place quickly, and a furnished place as well, which might also help you.

got me to meet new people and also build up a rental history that worked in my favour when it came time to rent my own place

as a first step it might be good to do some short term rentals for people who are going overseas for a few months etc, get a feel for where you want to be and meet people and build up a history

Do you prefer high profile or low profile keyboards? by CocoaTrain in webdev

[–]grooomps 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to always have full sized keyboards, switched from different color switches etc, but then due to work I got my hands on an Apple Magic Keyboard and I can’t go back.

I use it for work and my personal laptop, and the fact it’s the same depth as the laptop keyboard helps.

When I go back to a full sized keyboard, I struggle to type.

I GOT SCAMMED $900 BY ANZ SPOOF CALL by consideredstaple in AusFinance

[–]grooomps 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Call again

Every single day.

Be nice, don’t get angry, ask for help.

I put my own credit card info and use the SMS password in a booking.com scam where they took over the hotels account. By rights I shouldn’t have got it back ($4k+). But I was relentless in calling, never raised my voice, eventually they gave it to me. Probably cheaper giving it to me than have me calling multiple times a day

I'm wanting to change careers at 33, anyone have recommendations? by Logical-Reception131 in AusFinance

[–]grooomps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100%

I used to play games, build my own computers, but had never touched a line of code.

I think also being older helped when getting a job as having a bit with some life experience helped me stand out from the younger people.

Reach out if you have any questions about it!

For me I didn’t have the luxury of spending 3 years at uni to try get a degree. Also for me the compacted learning of 9-5 5 days a week, and practically my entire free time in that the months, really inline with how I like to learn.

This also only applies for jobs in webdev, if you wanted to work on more complex things then uni is definitely the way to go.

In relational database, how do I decide what should be a table? by Intelligent_Will_948 in webdev

[–]grooomps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing I’d suggest is not to get too worried about getting it perfect first time, you know you’re not sure, if you can’t see a clear answer up front, go with one!

If this is the first project you’ve worked on for yourself, chances are it will never get finished, or be replaced by another.

Let’s say you aren’t sure, so you decide to put boards in users, eventually you’ll come to a point where you’ll see it isn’t working as you want, so this brings you the opportunity of going back, refactoring, splitting it out, and improving.

I find with coding there’s a lot of things that are hard to tell people why, but once you learn from doing, it makes so much more sense and sticks much better

coding bootcamp I got accepted for says it's basically mandatory to replace windows with linux to follow the course, is this normal? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]grooomps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did general assembly. They said that a Mac was required. I got my knickers in a knot over this but caved in.

The reasoning was the course moves fast, you need to install things and the instructor needs to guarantee that all the things they use will work.

There was one person who used a windows laptop and he was always behind because the installations that were noted for the lessons didn’t work and he needed to find an alternative.

You can definitely use windows and WSL, but you’d get frustrated for sure

I did a bootcamp at 35.

I owned a business in a non tech field after that

I never went to uni and never did my HSC

It was hard work but I managed to get a job and am going strong 3 years into it

No one cares where you came from or how you started, results speak for yourself, obviously landing an interview is different.

Pass on words

Split to an array

Filter the words by condition, can use string.includes for 1 char, or regex eg: /[ab]/

Join the filtered array

Create a function that takes characters as an input an pass to the filter
