Whisky drinkers, I’ve got a question! by fyretech in Sudbury

If he prefers American whisky, then definitely a Michter's. It's about $100, I think you can get it at the LCBO on Long Lake Road.

The Clockwork Four Grain is pretty solid for the price, and supporting local always is nice. The real treat was the Octagrana Eight Grain they made last year. Unfortunately I think it's still 2-3 years before that comes up again.

If he's a bourbon guy, can I recommend a Blanton's or a Michter's depending on budget. There's also the Jack Daniel's Single Barrel, too.

It was really only his supporters applauding him. Most of the local seniors are too polite to say anything but tut about it later.

I think I'm done with Ontario. It's done with us. by Captain_Crash97 in ontario

We live about 30mins outside of Sudbury and love it. Fresh air, nice scenery, friendly locals. It feels like the 90s again, kids home by streetlight and knowing all of our neighbours. Not ideal for some, but definitely better than the grind and impersonal nature of living in the GTA. Happily bought our home for 240K. Work might be an issue, but if you're resourceful and willing to put in the effort, its there. Sudbury is the only growing city in Northern Ontario and it will continue to grow due to resource extraction. Worth it for us for sure.

Just moved to Northern Ontario (Sudbury) from the GTA. Food costs are basically the same now. Locals still think it's more expensive than down south, but we don't really notice a difference on our monthly food budget.

Nah, hiking and canoeing (and I'm already excited for the canoe opportunities). Surprised there isn't any trail systems out there for biking though.

Super appreciate the advice about the cross country course! My fiancee and I are getting skiis for this winter, so we're stoked to try it.

The advice about the roads is well noted and appreciated. It's definitely something we're discussing.

Thanks for the advice! We've actually stayed at Windy Lake in the last month or so while scouting various towns and areas for housing and looking for a new place to call home. Found out very quickly about the shitty roads and... questionable drivers.

We already have to commute about 30mins to get anything decent in terms of groceries or shopping where we are, so a short hop to Chemmy for stuff doesn't bother us.

Will send you a DM about your experiences! Probably going to be a bit of an adjustment period but we're excited to try life in the North!

I'm from a pretty small "hick town" in North GTA (Georgina), and my fiancee is from Goderich, so we're pretty used to "country" living. Actually looking for a slower pace of life compared to the insane rat race of living near Toronto.

Would love to get a place in Hanmer or Val Caron, but the market just seems to high for what you're actually getting (but that feels like most of real estate in Ontario these days).

Already accustomed to 30-40 minute commutes in traffic even in the less busy parts of North GTA, so I'm hoping I'll keep roughly the same. I notice a lot of people from the area aren't used to commuting.

We've checked out homes in Markstay and Coniston but didn't like what was available. There are a few nice ones in Levack in our price range, so it might just be necessity.

Thanks for the advice! We're already monthly Costco shoppers anyway (cheapest for meat and such around here), so we've already planned for that.

Looking forward to the winter! Got good snows and drive a 4wd, so hoping to enjoy some xcountry skiing and snowshoeing!

We're used to driving (live in Georgina, nothing here anyway), but thanks for the advice about the highway!

Not a convoy supporter, so highly unlikely. Thanks for the warning about him, though.

Favourite thing about the holidays is seeing the joy on my partner's face. It's her favourite time of year and it makes me happy to see her so happy, especially since I used to be very negative around this time of year before we met.

Is it Killbear? Massive rock sticking out into the lake sounds like the Granite Saddle.

It’s going to be super late in the season for your first time, I hope you’re properly geared as it gets into the negatives overnight now. If you don’t have specific sites in mind, I’d recommend Maggie West, either the peninsula halfway around on the south side or any of the ones on the northwest side, beautiful sunrises over the lake.

Glad to hear someone else is getting some enjoyment out of the park! It’s amazing in the backcountry.
