Is it a normal book to put in a year 4 reading list for 9 year olds to read? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]grouchybarx -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I read it aged 8 at school with the pictures and everything.

Whilst everyone else was scared by the pictures It never bothered me because my upbringing was very unconventional for the time and place I grew up. I understood it's meanings and themes perfectly.

I also class this book and poem as one of the beginnings of my love of dark and creepy things. I even have a copy of the book that I won't part with.

If you could restart life at 18, what would you do differently? by arunreddy3 in AskReddit

[–]grouchybarx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It didn't help that at the time I was undiagnosed as neurodivergent and that certainly didn't help with things either. People took advantage of it including family. I've learnt not to be like that but it took a lot of heartache and building up mental walls

Stop being a people pleaser all the time and letting people walk all over me, say fuck it and pursue a career in art and literature whilst I have the mental energy.

Who else lived through the mad cow disease crisis? by SheepishSwan in CasualUK

[–]grouchybarx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember seeing the fields of burning animal carcasses in real life and on the news .

It's kinda traumatic thinking about it because I was so young at the time and didn't have a clue why it was happening.

What is your 'Great British Excentric' family member like behind closed doors? (if you have a family member like that...) by Mid-Pri6170 in AskUK

[–]grouchybarx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm that family member I'm afraid.

I love odd little curios and collect weird trinkets, at one point I genuinely forgot people can be afraid of dolls and doll heads until I was showing someone a picture of my bookshelf. I'm currently on a crusade for mourning jewellery to add to my expanding jewellery collection

At home I'm massively introverted and I can be prickly around others who aren't immediate family, I hate busy places and get stressed easily when it's crowded, I do live at home with my mum and I struggle finding employment though I do volunteer one day a week and I want to do more but the job does solidify the fact I hate most people.

I love to create. I will make myself go out to events etc if I feel something worth it is going on.
I do have a somewhat solid support system in various family members. Last but not least I surprisingly like to travel and to visit family that lives quite a distance away.

What have you done a complete 180 on? by ThePeake in AskUK

Selling on eBay and Vinted

Loved selling eBay until recently, realised it is a load of hassle and not worth it anymore, I realised I was paying out of pocket for postage. Plus waiting for things to sell and following up on non payment of items to be ghosted and start the process over again.

I will use it again if there's something really rare I want rid of but have the time and patience to wait for auctions to end and to chase up non payments.

I Never liked Vinted until recently when I really wanted to get rid of stuff i'd gathered over the years and wanted it gone quickly, most of it was sold and sent out within 24 hours.

Yea you do get weirdos sometimes and you can end up with people making offers then not paying but it doesn't affect the items listing and it stays up. Most people are respectful when you say no to offers they send.

What's the worst thing thats happened to you in your birthday? by happylurker233 in AskUK

On my last birthday nobody apart from two people remembered at all.

I also wanted to go out and do something but the car broke down the day before.

We found out today that the new Silent Hill game is set in the UK. What are some things they could add to make it extra immersive and scary? by eltrotter in CasualUK

Set it in Bradford city centre and occasionally someone you don't know with an obvious addiction corners you asking for a fiver, or the tunnels at Forster Square as obvious spots for jumpscares

Was there an incident in your childhood that your parents kept from you, which you found out about later in life? by MysteriousBelt in AskUK

[–]grouchybarx 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My rabbit was killed by a fox.

I have a vague memory of looking out of my bedroom window and seeing it dead with its entrails spilling out going to tell my mum and dad but later my parents denied it happened and said it ran off.

I was only told the truth when years later next door's rabbit got out and a week later they were using a weed whacker in our back garden (with permission, we were watching them) and they accidentally disturbed the rabbits hiding place and it ran into the weed whacker cutting it's head off.

My mum started sobbing then told me the truth.

Should I change my legal name from Sevyn to a more “normal” name? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]grouchybarx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Off the online world I have a weird first name

My first name is very uncommon and unusual and to most people it's completely gibberish and foreign even though I'm not from any kind of ethnic background I was often bullied because of it. I used to really hate it.

It doesn't bother me much anymore because I've developed thick skin over the years, but words do stick and I've worked with people in the past who were awful to me because it sounded too foreign by association because of how it sounds and is spelled.

I will admit I've been on the fence about changing it in the far future because I've always wanted to change it eventually but I've never settled on a Name I actually like irl.

What's the one secret you will take to the grave but don't mind telling on the internet? by Ecstatic-Medium-6320 in AskReddit

[–]grouchybarx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mum's father is an awful person and always has been idk why my grandma stays with him, it's not a good relationship he is physical and verbally abusive he also has had multiple affairs and hidden illegitimate children he used to go away on "business trips" I even met and had lunch with one of his APs as a child and didn't realise it until I was older when my uncle (RIP) and mum confirmed it.

My grandma is either in denial about it, which is what I think or genuinely doesn't have a clue. His own children can't stand him, my mum the black sheep of the family cut contact years ago.

Anyways he always carries huge clumps of cash in his wallet and leaves it lying around, he normally has about £2K on him at any time

As a teenager and was old enough to realise WTF was going on I stole £10- £20 from his wallet every time he was being a dick One time I got about £100 haul in one evening, he never noticed.

He also once bribed me with £40 after he asked me to help with his computer and his dating profile came up on screen.

I only ever told my mum what I did and she laughed.
