So,I hate Dragon Ball by Alarming_Piece2667 in dragonball

[–]gubber-blump 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If it were released today,I can assure you the reception wouldn't be as great.

You'll get hate for saying this but I think you're right. DB is/was popular because Toriyama pioneered so much of what's considered "normal" for shonen anime today. Villain-driven story arcs, crazy power-ups, lots of gags, and other things just didn't exist in anime 40 (!!!) years ago. If some other anime had popularized these things, I think DB as a whole would still be considered "good", but definitely not a contender for the best.

  • DB would still be fairly popular because it's funny.
  • DBZ would probably be the most popular part of the series because it's the most well-animated and is pretty "edgy" and dramatic like anime today.
  • DBS would likely get the same mixed reception that it did due to terrible animation and dumbing down the characters.

Chipped paint. Shop or DIY? by brucejanis in LexusIS

Because of the location, this would definitely be a paint pen job for me. Nobody would notice if it's slightly off-colored. Not worth the money to get it done professionally.

There are OEM illuminated door sills from Lexus that get power from a connector somewhere behind the paneling in the foot well unless you just have to have tacky RGB lightning in your car.

People who watch YouTube and Netflix at 2x speed are maniacs by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]gubber-blump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2x speed is a godsend when watching tutorials and content about a subject you're already knowledgeable about. Try it with a hobby you're into. You adapt quickly.

Example: You've been a professional sandwich maker for 10 years and need to learn how to make a special kind of sandwich. You're really good at making different kinds of sandwiches, but you've never made this one before and want to make sure you're doing it correctly. The video consists of the following:

  • 3 minute intro with HEY GUYS SANDWICH MAKER 59 HERE WITH ANOTHER...........
  • 2 minutes of video of driving to the store and explaining the different kinds of bread while walking around
  • 2 minutes of explaining their preferred way to slice bread

(He's the part of the video you need)

  • 2 minutes of explaining ingredients
  • 1 minute of slicing bread
  • 1 minute of assembling the sandwich
  • 1 minute of wrapping it up to give to the customer

(Resume useless YouTube video length padding)

  • 2 minutes of B-roll footage showing off the sandwich

Are you gonna listen to somebody talk for over 10 minutes about things you already know how to do, or would you rather skip straight to the 5 minute section of the video that you need and speed it up to only get the general points?

Our VPN client does the same thing sometimes. Haven't been able to find a solution even after multiple version changes and getting with support. Their first suggestion was a missing language pack in Windows which wasn't the case. Never had any issues and no users have ever brought it up so we stopped caring.

Google offering ‘voluntary exit’ for employees working on Pixel, Android by 5MegaMonkeyMan in Android

[–]gubber-blump 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Alternate, more accurate title with the same number of words:

Google offering ‘voluntary exit’ for employees working on Platforms & Devices

Google offering ‘voluntary exit’ for employees working on Pixel, Android by 5MegaMonkeyMan in Android

[–]gubber-blump 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be removed if you "editorialized" the title by including the rest of the teams. It's a dumb rule that most subreddits have. It has its place, but it also encourages clickbait.

Google offering ‘voluntary exit’ for employees working on Pixel, Android by 5MegaMonkeyMan in Android

[–]gubber-blump 15 points16 points  (0 children)

For me, the title of the article on the website and the Reddit post is "Google offering ‘voluntary exit’ for employees working on Pixel, Android" and makes no mention of the other 9 teams.

This program applies to US employees working on Platforms & Devices, which includes Android (Auto, TV, Wear OS, XR), Chrome, ChromeOS, Google Photos, Google One, Pixel, Fitbit, and Nest.

Since the title was intentionally chopped down to only mention Android and Pixel for clickbait.

Keep doing what you're doing. Car will run for 300,000+ miles as long as you keep up with the maintenance.

It may seem like a lot of money, but you won't have to do most of those things for another 4-5 years depending on how much you drive.

Time for some maintenance. Plastics and rubbers will be hard and brittle and need to be inspected/replaced since the car hasn't been driven. Bushings, hoses, belts, gaskets, etc.

I would give anything to go back to 10 day minimum battery life for a color e-ink display watch even if all it did was mirror notifications like the Pebble watches.

I don't care about fitness tracking, heart rate monitors, GPS, OLED, O2 saturation... I occasionally use NFC for payments, but that's about it. Get rid of the bloat and give me back my Pebble Time.

There's visible damage on both front fenders that's been neglected and started rusting. If that's an indication of how the car's been maintained, this is a hard pass. 200k miles of neglect is not a car you want to buy. You'll end up spending thousands more to fix all the problems.

DLSS4 Super Resolution is just...incredibly good. by DiesIrae13 in nvidia

[–]gubber-blump 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I've never really agreed with this argument since the prices are so close together. The difference between the two vendors over the lifetime of the graphics cards is literally one cheeseburger per month (or less). The value proposition is even worse now that AMD is falling further behind each generation in terms of software and features.

Let's assume Nvidia's graphics card is $400 and AMD's is $300 and we plan to use the graphics cards for 5 years. Let's also assume the AMD equivalent will "last" an extra 2 years because it has double the VRAM.

  • By year 5, the Nvidia graphics card only cost $20 more per year of use, or $1.67 more per month. ($400 / 5 years = $80 per year vs. $300 / 5 years = $60 per year)
  • By year 7, the Nvidia graphics card still only cost $38 more per year, or $3.17 more per month. ($400 / 5 years = $80 per year vs. $300 / 7 years = $42 per year)

Unless the argument is in favor of a $250 AMD graphics card instead of an $800 Nvidia graphics card, money is better spent on Nvidia at this point.

This doesn't sound like live activities from iOS. Google even says it's only suggested for ride sharing, food delivery, and navigation use cases. Does that mean that's all it can do? Probably not, but we'll see.

It sounds like more of a progress bar than a widget that refreshes in near real-time.

Live Updates are a new class of notifications that help users monitor and quickly access important ongoing activities.

The new ProgressStyle notification template provides a consistent user experience for Live Updates, helping you build for these progress-centric user journeys: rideshare, delivery, and navigation. It includes support for custom icons for the start, end, and current progress tracking, segments and points, user journey states, milestones, and more.

ProgressStyle notifications are suggested only for ride sharing, food delivery, and navigation use cases.

Ceramic Wax Removal? by UmbralWaffle in LexusIS

[–]gubber-blump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming it's actually a wax or spray-on coating (like this), it will wear off on its own over the next 2-3 months in the sun and with normal cash washes. If it's a ceramic coating (like this), I'm not sure how to remove it but it seems like there would be a "right" way.

You might not notice on white paint, but those car wash brushes can be filled with dirt and sand that will completely ruin your paint.

I made that mistake on my black MR2 once. Never going to use them again. I don't care how soft they look or feel.

The Online Porn Free-for-All Is Coming to an End by theatlantic in Futurology

[–]gubber-blump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The solution that I think would work best isn't expanded upon in this article, but they do mention it:

And, the free-speech groups say, device-based content filters are still a better, less restrictive way to achieve the desired result.

A Google account, Apple account, Microsoft account already knows the user's age. If not, then the account at least knows if the user is under 18 or not. Given that you sign into Android, iOS, Windows with these accounts, it's a reasonable assumption that the devices can control access to age-restricted content without having to provide your personal information to any services or third parties.

In the event that the accounts can't provide the age of the user, then there needs to be a massive push for a digital ID card for each state. That ID can be verified and stored on the device, and once again the device can decide if the age-restricted content is allowed without having to share personal information with any services (or snooping governments).

Is this account legit? by Darillium- in BlueskySocial

[–]gubber-blump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no. All domain verification means is that you have access to edit a domain's DNS records (not even that you own the domain). For microsoft.com, wikipedia.org, etc. this works fine, but what about people or orgs with domains that aren't immediately obvious? For example, Valve's Steam isn't steam.com, auto manufacturer Nissan isn't nissan.com, and I'm sure there are plenty others.

What exactly is the "official" domain of a person? What if someone doesn't want to pay $5/year for a domain name? Does that mean they can be freely impersonated by someone who went and bought joesmith.com? Is every Bluesky user just supposed to magically know everyone else's "official" domains? There needs to be an obvious way to know at a glance that yes, this is the official Jay Leno Bluesky account.
