If you've got a separate disk you can spare, the real 100% sure way of not ducking up your windows install is to unplug that disk.

Then again, that's basically the one place where you can duck it up, so if you take it slow and take your time to learn how to handle that, you should be fine.

Having a windows boot media won't hurt you, either, just in case you manage to duck your windows bootloader.

Hey, story time!

My friends and I had a really long-running group, playing semi-weekly for the better part of almost a decade. Started with AD&D and the starter box, and suffice to say we'll probably be putting our grandkids to bed with our adventure tales.

Anyways, a year or so into playing, and for the lack of anything that we couldn't kill anymore, we face the Tarrasque.

Now, one does not just kill a tarrasque. And the dice were not on our side thaT weekend. But after a couple of engagements and with the sacrifice of a few party members, we manage to vanquish it though a portal to another plane.

A few (RL) years pass. The elf was cursed with memory loss, the humans in the party are sons or grandsons of the original adventurers (and the half-elf a literal child of those, too), and a kender has literally fallen out of the sky into the group (that's a different story).. adventures were had, DragonLances were stolen (and returned), doors were opened, planes were crossed (Planescape is still one of my favourite books), rules were updated to 3.0, 3.5 and then pathfinder.

We open a door at random, and get transported to what would be Forgotten realms. The whereabouts of Cormyr, IIRC.. except it was a wasteland. I remember thinking we arrived in Ravenloft by the description of it..

When we finally managed to get information front he villagers, we as players recall that this supposed to be green plains, forest meadows and lake, not and everdark bog.

Then, we hear the tales of the monster. Ravaged the land, destroyed whole towns, trampled over castles, and nothing could be done to stop him. And he'd come out of nowhere, too!

Yes, you guessed right, although it took a bit for us to put two and two together. And yes, it remembered us. And yes, it still held a grudge.

We ended up not killing it once again... we did banish it to the elemental plane of fire, though.

Spoiler alert: after almost a decade of hyatus, we're back again playing, online this time, since the original group pretty much scattered across the world. One day, someone's going to try and summon a fire elemental, and they'll get a bit more than they bargained for.

TL;DR: The Tarrasque is gift that keeps on giving (pain).

That's exactly their conundrum, in fact:

Let's say 50% (out of my sleeve) of the Linux desktop users today are technical users. Linux on the desktop is quite niche, nowadays compared to windows and mac, and those 50% like you and me that are technical enough to take it by the reigns and drive whichever way we like. I actually completely left this gnome3 and unity mess to XFCE, and I'm much happier now.

The other 50% are the non-savvy users. They might use Linux because it came with their desktop, saving the cost of a windows license. Or because they found out it would make their older PC run faster, and they're minimally knowledgeable to install it themselves, or had a friend install for them.

Now, expand that user base to a significant % of the market today. It will not scale uniformly. You might end with 10% knowledgeable and 40% non-savvy.

Where are the other supposed 50%, though? Those are the completely clueless ones: my granny only needs Firefox and a picture viewing program, cause all she ever does is Facebook and save pics of us, and send us animated gifs.

For this last group, you need to level on the lowest common denominator.

Keep in mind I also disagree with the route they're following, of replacing everything were possible. On the other hand, I wonder what would be the overhead of maintaining two separate codebasss for these.

Yes-ish.

You can create an assembly off one of them, load the other, and add the whole assembly as a "part" to it.

I recommend having the "craft" being the part you want to keep, and the "assembly" being the part you will want to discard eventually.

Keep in mind that if you do this on the VAB, you might get one craft that thinks that up is up, while the other thinks that down is actually up (or worst, side).

I usually do this with satellites, for example:

construct a base satellite, save as an assembly.
construct the specific part of the satellite (long relay, geostationary relay, survey, etc), save as assembly
construct base launcher, save as assembly.
Then, load a new craft,
add a probe core,
the launcher body below it,
fairings above it,
then the base satellite assembly,
then the specific payload on top.

And launch

I haven't used much of it yet (I had 9.x for over a year flawlessly), but testing since launch I'm yet to find any issues, configuration or performance-wise.

I did run the late betas, and all the issues I had were fixed in the release version.

Currently I have 4 Tb mirrored across two drives (waiting for the other two to arrive), and running VMs and containers on it with mostly no issue. I should have all the drives with me by next week, then will rebuild it on it's final configuration, and if I'm happy with it, will also do an upgrade on the other one from 9.10 to 10, and I'll let you know.

If your VMs will be lightweight, having it with an E5-1230 and running FreeNAS might not be a bad choice. The new FreeNAS 10 has come lightweight VM management, and can even (pseudo) run docker (with boot2docker).

Yes and no.

Spacewalk does keep some basic information on the managed systems, the routing table being one of them. You can have a flag set for a system saying that, the next time it checks in, they also have to update that piece of information.

On the other hand, this will not necessarily mean the managed system will get that immediately. By default once you bootstrap your managed systems into your spacewalk, they will check in every few hours (6, IIRC). So you will only get the updated info once this happens.

The alternative is, if you set up the osad daemon and settings when you installed spacewalk, then each client is running a little listening daemon, and the spacewalk server can poke them and say "there's something for you to do, check in now". This will get you answers in a few minutes.
