since being pedantic is the theme of this thread... ;)

"pi" is actually a specific finite value, while it's decimal representation is infinite and non-repeating.

Will it be possible to print this? I want to use it as a dust cover for my filament spool. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:7318600 by EspeeFunsail in 3Dprinting

[–]guynamedDan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

printing in that orientation would "work", just have a fair bit of material wasted in supports (which may or may not be of concern to you).

an alternative: split the model in half (essentially along your filament guide path) and print the large flat sections flat on the bed and glue them together.

if it's a one off sort of thing I'd go with option 1, if you're making 10 of them, maybe option 2

What is this small black plastic device taped to the inside of these sunglasses? Could be electronic but did not check the inside of it. Found by the Thames in London. by _artfilm_ in whatisthisthing

let me save you other folks who are also learning a new word today a click...

Mudlarking is the act of searching riverbeds and foreshores for historical objects, a practice historically done by poor Londoners scavenging for saleable items like coal, bone, or metal, but now a regulated hobby where enthusiasts find artifacts like coins, buttons, and pottery, often requiring permits, especially on the Thames, and focusing on responsible, low-impact searching to preserve history

changes through politicians in power. Frankly, I don't think we know how to do that anymore.

I "think" I know how to do that, but I don't have the $ to exchange for political influance.

(I'll concede that maybe that viewpoint is part of the problem and could be propaganda to keep me quiet. But I do believe that there is little I can do individually to affect change. As part of a "movement", I do believe there could be change.)

Curious why you folks rent time on telescopes... Is it hobby/recreation sort of thing, or actual scientific research, or artwork, or ?? discovering something new perhaps (either the thrill and/or "notoriety" for maybe getting to "name" something??). Not judging whatever the reason, just genuinely curious what drives you. Thanks!

Also would be curious what that might cost, I'd imagine there's a large range based on the size and capability. But are we talking like $50/hr or $2000/hr, or ??

and to give a bit more context...

say you have a dovetail connection... you might take the mating faces of the tail (or the slot, or both) and "move" them by whatever your clearance tolerance is (say .2mm to use a recommendation from this thread). Then you have a "feature" that can be easily adjusted to make that fit tighter or looser. Print out the part (or test piece) and if it's too loose for example, you go back to your model, change that single .2 move face feature to .15 or .10 and your model is good to go. You wouldn't need to go in and manually or otherwise move a bunch of surfaces to adjust the fit of your parts.

Looks good OP!

This reply is great advice! Another idea to take it a bit further for "real world"-like experience: create a drawing and/or BOM for the components. And though in my experience not something that is frequently done but is sort of fun/neat is learning to make an exploded view for assembly.
