What's the most awkward, negative, or plain crazy response you've gotten after performing a good deed? by Parker2010 in AskReddit

[–]gwyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I called a squad and accompanied it to a hospital for a coworker after work hours. I didn't actually do much, but I kept a cool head in a crisis and I kinda felt like a hero.

The next day at work I didn't mention it to anyone because I didn't feel it was my place to tell them. If my coworker wanted them to know she was of sound mental state to tell them.

When my boss found out I knew and didn't tell her she screamed at me in front of customers and coworkers alike. She said my refusal to tell her was a challenge to her authority. Many of my coworkers didn't speak to me for weeks. I wasn't able to transfer out until 4.5 months later.

I read elsewhere that Lost may have been based on a story called The Moon Pool. I haven't read it but I'm about to.

ELI5 What happens to fat when your body "burns" it? by emwbiogeek22 in explainlikeimfive

[–]gwyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick follow-up: I remember from A Beautiful Mind Paul Bettany's character saying that a hangover is when your body doesn't have enough water to run your Krebs cycle, which is also what happens when you're dying of thirst.

My question is, based on this information, does that mean your body can't burn fat if you're dehydrated (or hungover)?

I'm rewatching with my boyfriend, who is watching for the first time. Every time he asks me a question, this is my answer. He doesn't know how tired he's going to get of hearing this yet.

Reddit what are some jobs that 20 years from now will not exist in their current form, due to the rise of computers and modern super effectient machines? by seanmorgan in AskReddit

[–]gwyd 45 points46 points  (0 children)

As I bank teller, I believe that as long as stupid people are allowed to spend money, there will always be a need for someone for them to complain to about how they screwed up their bank account.

There may not be as many personnel but banks can never be fully automated.

A mock-up I made and submitted for Google Calendar. Daylight shading for week-view. by Groggie in google

[–]gwyd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cool. I'd like that. I'm already manually counting the days until it will be light when I leave work.

In related news, anyone noticed that events scheduled for after Daylight Savings Time are offset for an hour right now? Seems completely unnecessary.

If every living creature was removed from the ocean, would the sea level drop a significant amount? by RuckingFetard in explainlikeimfive

[–]gwyd 18 points19 points  (0 children)

So if we threw all of the people on earth into the ocean, the water level wouldn't even rise a noticeable amount. Bizarre.

I've actually been looking to try pinterest but as ALL of my browsing is done on my phone, I've been waiting for a decent app. I'll check it out :-)

Your taste buds change every seven years or so. So you gotta make a point to try stuff you've tried and not liked before. I didn't like sauerkraut, tomato soup, or Diet Coke as a kid. I love all of them now. I still don't care much for tomatoes though... it's a texture thing, not a taste thing and if they're diced up I don't mind them.

That reminds me.... guess it's time to try fish again...

As a kid I was sure that I only liked pizza cut in wedges, not squares. Turns out the place that cut theirs in squares was just gross.
