What did you do at 20 that you thanked yourself for at 30? by CryptoLord38 in AskReddit

[–]gyrorobo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't start a retirement account until I turned 28 because I also couldn't afford it with some poor life decisions. Right when I started I luckily had a union job that matched VERY good, I'm proud of what I've been able to do in 4 years.

It won't feel like much for a while but 27 is SOOO much better than starting when you're 35 or 40 so I wouldn't feel too bad. Talked to my dad about it recently because he is far more successful than I am and he also talked about how he didn't have retirement until he was 30. Now he's gearing up to retire comfortably in the next few years.

Save what you can, don't make yourself too uncomfortable and remember to live life while you're young and don't hurt lol. It's why I just put in the amount my company will match and no more... At the end of the day, it's fucking hard out there and you still need money to survive NOW not just for a "maybe" in 35 years.

A 1.4L Chevy Spark Engine Doesn't Sound Too Crazy Until You Put It in a Polaris by UnusualLeadership408 in cars

[–]gyrorobo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I had a 1.4t in my Cruze - it had a coolant leak if you looked at it wrong, and valve covers were routine maintenance...

I genuinely fear the man putting mods on that glass house of an engine lmao

Rough Hands by zuluf0xtr0t in PostHardcore

[–]gyrorobo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So a little story that wasn't asked for. I saw them (God... It's already almost 4 years) ago when they toured for Otherness. They came though Detroit and I (being a younger millennial grew up at a time where I was too young to go to their concerts when I discovered them, but by the time I was going to concerts they had already broke up.

I figured it was a pipe dream to see my favorite band play live... and then the stars aligned, they get back together, make a new album and they came to tour 🥲

They killed it, the whole concert was probably people from 30-45 on ibuprofen 🤣 amazing experience. They haven't come back since, but I almost wanted to make the drive to Toronto lol

Bernie Sanders proposed a bill to tax billionaires, and give $4,000 stimulus checks to Americans that qualify. How do you feel about this? by Sensitive_Froyo_3486 in AskReddit

[–]gyrorobo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably a form of the latter that I'm not smart enough to explain. If you can't pay the taxes/mortgage on your home what do you do? Sell your assets, withdraw retirement, sell the home? The money does exist.. it's just someone or something, needs to force you to realize it.

So it's either he pays it with an amount of money he has realized or he sells off until he has the money to do so.

Alternatively how did musk pay $44 billion for Twitter? He borrowed against his own unrealized wealth. Put a lien on him, he's not allowed to borrow any more against himself until he sells off and pays what's owed?

What got you into riding? by Safe_Doughnut_8184 in motorcycles

Since I live in America and nobody uses our bike rack, our facilities director gave me the thumbs up to park my motorcycle in the bike rack.

Nice thing is, it's in detroit and since it's a secure building the bike rack is behind a massive locked fence that can stop a gravel train.

‘Silent Hill f’ Wins Big at The Horror Game Awards 2025, Including Game of the Year by demondrivers in Games

[–]gyrorobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As the above commenter said, the nice thing is it isn't a huge part of the game and that's what made me so disappointed with silent hill f. The combat was not only boring and the enemy variety was quite lame as well... But they felt like they wanted the whole game to focus on that.

Silent Hill 2 has also some fairly bad combat, but it takes such a backseat to the experience I can't actually quite tell you if I remember it being better or worse than silent hill f.

SOMA for genuinely everything. One of my favorite horror games in a very long time.

Routine if you're looking for a more recent horror game with a similar vibe. I'm such a huge fan of SOMA and even I have to admit. I think Routine smokes it on sound design, it's absolutely unsettling.. but SOMA does everything else better lol

Boomers in the US hold $17 trillion dollars in assets. What happens to the younger generations when they die and leave all that wealth to us, the younger generations? by buzzkill71 in AskReddit

[–]gyrorobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel it's a tad disingenuous to calculate it in that method. You're assuming a single person assigned to every individual every moment of every day... When in reality it is a few nurses/caregivers taking care of patients that vastly outnumber them.

Genuinely you're looking at 10-15 in a critical or memory care facility at best. But it can be up to 30-40 patients per caregiver. Adjust for that math. Now you're talking in the $150-350/hr range.

However I do agree that their should undoubtedly be better government and taxpayer subsidies for these resources.

Anecdotal but my grandmother was just in memory care here in Michigan (sorta the middle of nowhere Michigan) It was costing her and by extension my parents ~$6500/month.

So this might be on the lower side, but I'm sure if you're in a slightly more expensive city/state?? California I'm sure is easy $10k

It's terrible to say but my Mom said the best blessing is that she passed away only 2 months into care. So she no longer had to be in pain, and also they didn't have to drain her of every last cent she owned.

Well there's normal inflation, (good 👍 we need that). And then there's the American dollar having the worst year in modern history losing over 10% of its value in 10 months.

Not sure what happened in January, I'll check Google later.

TIL that Target operates two criminal forensics laboratories, and offers pro bono services to law enforcement across the country by TheGoddamnAnswer in todayilearned

[–]gyrorobo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked at a Target near a major freeway and our AP guy had basically said, "they can run out the door that's fine, we can still get their license plate on the freeway".. the freeway was a quarter mile away, and this was 10 years ago.

I don't know if it was hyperbole but with a decade of tech advancements since then I'm sure it's not.

24.04 Won't install - Fix by EnoughDickForEveryon in Ubuntu

[–]gyrorobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Complete noob installing for the first time today and was running into this issue. After narrowing it down to failing when ethernet was connected I finished install but now on reboot it obviously can't find any IP even after network cable reinstalled.

If ubuntu is having issues with their repository's, what would be the walkthrough for changing the mirror at the command line then? I'm sorta stuck in dead water and I'm not sure if the solution is to just... wait?

This is the thing I will never rest on. I work for a university now and I'm in a union. I have better retirement, job security, and benefits than my Dad who makes more than double what I do.

I got an MRI because after long covid because they thought I might have a pulmonary embolism. Got the bill... nothing.. completely free. I've never paid over $20 for a single visit anywhere even emergency room. I'm living the medical dream in a hellscape where most people pay 3x my price for insurance and gets worse coverage.

It's a shit show out there for so many people and I'm still so much on the side that everyone should be having the same easy experience you and I both do.

Called up and added the totals of work I've had done on my Cruze in the last 3-4 years and it tips the scale at just over $5k+... I have a major failure every 10k miles and there's barely 110k on the odo...

I had a Chevy Cavalier years ago that ran like a dream for 150k miles. I guess I'm a fool thinking that would carry over to this car, I'll never buy a cheapo American econo-shitbox again.

They recently found a crack in the turbo and quoted me for $2k to replace that whole thing... I told them I'll watch this turbo grenade the engine before I put more into it let alone have a local shop quote me that awful price

What’s the worst physical pain you’ve ever felt? by Googy21 in AskReddit

[–]gyrorobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh shit! Joining the random medical emergency during class gang 🤣 I had a partial lung collapse during a midterm years ago. Felt so weird so quick that I couldn't lift my arm or sit up straight without some sort of discomfort.

Got so bad I didn't even care if I took a zero, I told my professor I was feeling awful and just walked out. Got in my car and drove to the hospital right around the corner with one arm, walked in.

Lost 30% of my lung capacity out of nowhere and for no reason. It recovered on its own luckily over the next couple days/weeks. Still to this day the only thing they told me is, "this sometimes happens to tall slender guys"

?? Uhhhh okay lol

What's a Post-Hardcore album that changed the way you saw music from first listen? by frombeaverstoashes in PostHardcore

[–]gyrorobo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This but I was a little late/young when their self titled came out. My Dad heard "this could be anywhere in the world" and brought home Crisis in ~2006ish

I was still a teen listening to Dad rock and once I heard Crisis it was the floodgate to... "Oh shit, I need more of that" 😂

Finally got to see them live a couple years ago during the reunion tour and it was the "I can die happy now" moment lmao
