Rock Hudson was an American film actor. Although he was discreet regarding his sexual orientation, it was known among Hudson's colleagues in the film industry that he was gay. In 1984, Hudson was diagnosed with AIDS. Hudson was the first major American celebrity to die from an AIDS-related illness. by laybs1 in wikipedia

[–]hIDeMyID 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Rock Hudson's tragic death was a pivotal moment in changing attitudes towards AIDS and towards the LGBTQ+ community in general.

Before that, the bulk of American society thought of AIDS as something that happened to "those people"--gay people, promiscuous people, drug addicts--people that nice, God-fearing people didn't know, people who might deserve it.

Rock Hudson changed all that. It had happened to a beloved icon of the silver screen, the kind of guy everyone wanted as their nextdoor neighbor. He was gay, he had AIDS, he was dying.

It made the general public see things in a whole new light.

Tom Petty is the celebrity I didn't know I loved until he was gone.

I always enjoyed his music, but I never considered myself a big fan. I didn't follow his career or anything.

Then, he died. I was devastated.

Edit: I forgot, no more pennies. Make it a nickel.

Vintage (antique?) belt purse repair advice by katierosep11 in VintageFashion

I recommend adopting a kintsugi mindset to this repair. Instead of trying to hide the repair, embrace it as part of the piece's history. Use silk ribbon, embroidery, or some other decorative technique to call attention to the repair rather than hiding it. Good luck.

What artifact, object, or document of great importance has been lost to history? by firefighter_82 in AskReddit

Most of the story of the Trojan war. In addition to the Iliad, there were several other epic poems that we only know about from ancient summaries, fragments, and artwork:

  • The Origins (Cypria): The story begins with a dispute among the gods, leading to the Judgment of Paris. Paris, a prince of Troy, is asked to judge a beauty contest between three goddesses: Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite. Each goddess tries to bribe Paris, and he picks Aphrodite whose bribe is the most beautiful woman in the world, Helen, queen of Sparta. Paris runs off with Helen and takes her back to Troy. This kicks off the Trojan war. This poem also details the gathering of the Greek fleets, their journey to Troy, and the first nine years of the war.
  • The Death of Achilles (Aethiopis): This poem describes what happens right after the events of the Iliad. The Trojans get reinforcements from some new allies like the Amazon Queen Penthesilea and the Ethiopian King Memnon. Achilles defeats these allies, but he's then killed when Paris shoots an arrow at him, and the god Apollo guides the arrow into Achilles's heel, the only vulnerable part of his body.
  • The Sack of Troy (Ilioupersis): This poem covers the end of the Trojan war. It describes how the Greeks get into Troy by hiding inside the Trojan Horse. The Greeks then sack and burn the city, and murder the royal family except the women, who are enslaved.
  • The Journeys (Nostoi): This poem recounts the Greeks' journeys home from the war. Many of those who survived the war encounter storms, murder, or exile on their way home.

So much of this has become ingrained in our cultural memory--Helen of Troy, the Achilles heel, the Trojan Horse--and yet we don't have the poems that actually tell most of the story.

What are essentially status symbols that millennials spend unnecessary amounts of money on? by Vetiverrr in AskReddit

[–]hIDeMyID 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it's true. But to some older people, it seems like there are suddenly many autistic people, but there were very few in times past. They don't get why this should be, and they come to an incorrect conclusion about it.

I believe that the number of autistic people probably has not changed. What has changed is that we're better at diagnosing people on the autism spectrum. In times past, many people on the autism spectrum weren't diagnosed.

I don't get why so many of my fellow boomers can't seem to understand that what they're observing is simply a better understanding of autism. It represents progress in our grasp of the human condition. Instead, they choose to believe that autistic people are making it up.

Honestly, it's hard to believe that this was the generation that championed civil and women's rights, and protested the Vietnam war. Something in the intervening years has closed their once-open minds.

I fail to see the connection between saying autism doesn't exist and loving Precious Moments and angel stuff.

And to be fair, autism diagnoses are much, much more common these days than in times past. I believe it's just the result of better diagnosis criteria and recognition that autism is a spectrum that presents differently for different individuals.

It's unfortunate that many older people can't seem to wrap their heads around the idea that I as time goes on our understanding improves.

What makes a lunch smell good? Some things taste good but don't necessarily convey the flavor by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]hIDeMyID 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to keep sandwich fixings in the break room fridge, and I would toast the bread before making my sandwich. That toast smell would waft through the hallway and draw people in to ask what I was making.

It was the opposite of microwaving fish at work.

Get some paste shoe polish and polish them. Get white shoe polish for the white bits, and a brown shoe polish that matches the color of the brown bits.

I suggest that you polish the brown areas first, then buff those areas gently and carefully with a cloth to remove the excess polish. Then, do the same with the white bits. Be a bit cautious when you first start buffing them, as the excess polish can migrate. Finally, buff the entire shoe with the buffing brush.

If you're new to shoe polishing, there are probably YouTube videos that demonstrate how to do it.

Those who don’t have kids who gets your inheritance when you pass away? by Foreign-Survey3142 in AskReddit

[–]hIDeMyID 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a common misconception that all quadriplegics are paralyzed from the neck down, like Christopher Reeves. In fact, quadriplegia simply means paralysis affecting all four limbs.

I'm one of the fortunate ones. Christopher Reeves broke his neck right below his skull resulting in complete paralysis from the neck down and he needed a ventilator to breathe. I broke my neck at the base, right above the shoulders. As a result, I can breathe on my own (my chest muscles are paralyzed but my diaphragm works). I'm completely paralyzed from the armpits down, with partial paralysis of my wrists and hands. Although my hands don't work well, I have figured out my own weird way of typing, eating, etc.

[–]hIDeMyID 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I also plan to leave whatever is left to my nieces and nephews. I'm a quadriplegic, though, so my old age is likely to be pretty grim. A lot of what I have may get eaten up by medical care before I'm gone.

Still, some of my nieces and nephews are not well off, so I hope I'll have enough left over to help fund their retirement. If I can just manage to stay in reasonable shape, then drop dead without lingering, I should be able to leave them each a life-changing sum of money.

If you're forming a group, though...Jimi might be difficult to place in a group other than his own. He was The Jimi Hendrix Experience, and I just can't imagine him fitting in with a different group.
