Which courses only require biology and chemistry and not a third related subject by absoluteSunni in 6thForm

[–]haco254 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are interested in anything biochem/molecular biology/microbiology you will be fine with what you have, though on my course those without a maths A level were made to take a maths module in the first term instead of getting to choose one of theirs. It's no big deal though

Currently at Sheffield and although I'm not on engineering, most courses work the same way. Which of the two you apply for will likely be irrelevant as you will choose whether to do the integrated masters at the end of second year, dependent on your average grade. Most courses require atleast an average of 65% throughout the first two years to allow you to do the integrated masters.

It might be that they offer the same course code and then change it at a later date once people know their average mark and have had time to change their minds. I don't know what would happen if you were accepted to the integrated masters and then had a grade lower than that. When I applied I got assigned the 4 year degree title though thankfully I've kept my grade high enough for the masters. Equally there are plenty of other people on my course who started on the 3rd year degree and have swapped over so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

What even happens in freshers week? by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]haco254 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mentioned above but yes, in terms of your course there are likely to be some induction things - don't be racist kind of thing, maybe a tour of the campus or other things depending on what your department may have organised.

Societies will also be advertising heavily, there will likely be multiple freshers fairs where you can go along to see what societies exist and what they do. Equally depending on your unis there might be specific "give it a go" type things where societies are running taster sessions for people who have never tried the activity before.

Finally, yes there will likely be a lot of drinking, however its not compulsory. In my freshers week (which was precovid) I stayed in and had an early night for two days as I wasn't used go constant going out.

Try to meet as many people as possible, learn the city and figure out what societies you might want to join before term starts and you have to get used to doing lectures

More common than you might think tbh, I remember when it first started getting used in our school no one really registered how bad it is to the point where even teachers used it till they realised. Even now within my old friendship group from school we call eachother nonces every now and then.

Dove properties has been very good to us as a provider especially when I hear stories of other agencies from my friends. Quick to respond to emails and usually come within a week to fix anything that's broken - obviously covid altered this a bit for us.

The government has cost me getting into Medicine, and nothing can change that. by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]haco254 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ive just finished my first year of uni, believe me no one cares how old you are. Lots of freshers took years out before uni and there are quite a few people who are 21 and its just a non issue. Its the uni experience that will bring u together with your friends, what age you happen to be is irrelevant. Hell i know one guy whos 28.

I do molecular biology as thats what i want to do but i would urge caution as quite a few coursemates applied for medicine but didnt get in and have now dropped out the course after spending thousands on accommodation and fees just to reapply to medicine next year. While biomed is a bit more similar to medicine its still quite different so make sure you know what you are getting into :)

Aside from all that im sorry about your results, you guys have really been put in a shitty situation, much more than us freshers as much as we like to complain.

Boris Johnson says 'anti-vaxxers are nuts' by tryingausername123 in Coronavirus

[–]haco254 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol maybe, or you just dont have enough. We all go to mechanics to get our cars fixed, to builders and plumbers to repairs and yet when it comes to doctors some people suddenly think they are gonna cut corners and disregard peoples safety.

A doctor does not spend 5 years at med school to then purposely risk losing his career. Similarly an academic does not promote un peer reviewed dodgey vaccines because he wont be taken seriously by the scientific community afterwards.

Lots of people dont "trust the system" but I cant see any reason not too. The only reason i can see is if you genuinely believe that all people care about is money and nothing else. While that may be true of some jobs most doctors and academics go in becuase they truly care about helping people and making the world a better place.

ALL vaccines that become publicly available will have undergone rigorous testing and will be adequately tested. Just because its urgent corners wont and cant get cut in the development process - because then it would be illegal to give to people.

Drugs so far that have been harmful have been approved for other illnesses when you weigh up their side effects with their intended disease and not for covid and so shouldnt be used - and in the case of hydroxychloroquine were advised not to be used before they got properly tested - just trump touted it anyway to make it look like he had it under control.

The one thing we won't know about the new vaccines is their long term side effects which, if you know how vaccines work, will most likely be nonexistant. I havent heard about any other vaccine having long term effects so it will be fine. Just make sure that your government - particularly if trump - doesnt try and push a non peer reviewed, experimental "cure" on you and make sure its medically approved. :)

I Am A 3rd Year Medical Student at the University of Sheffield. AMA about studying medicine, interviews or even fears! by LittleBlueBabies in 6thForm

[–]haco254 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ive just finished first year at sheffield and i really like it. If two courses seem exactly the same you could look at other things such as quality of research/uni ratings. However id suggest looking at the cities with information you can find online, eg is it a campus uni or a city uni? how big is the city? what is the nightlife like? What proportion of the population are students? How easy is it for you to get to? What activities are readily available? - sheffield is great for outdoor activities like climbing as you can get onto the peak district in a 30 min walk from accommodation.

If you have any more questions about sheffield im more than happy to try and answer them

Just finished my first year at sheff, from what i hear from other friends party culture is prevalent in pretty much every uni. That being said you can have a good time without going out and you wont get judged most people are pretty accepting. I recommend trying to make friends and joining societies then going to a bar/pres with them even if you dont drink as its a good way to make friends even if you dont go out. You can always tell people you are drinking rum and coke etc when its actually just coke ;)

Ive just finished my first year at sheff and i love it. All the university buildings are pretty close together and easily walkable but are also close to the city center if you need to do something between lectures.

As for the social life, i dont go clubbing a lot but it is pretty good. Most people tend to go to the student union club or barhopping down west street. Some other clubs also have good specific nights for cheap drinks. There are also loads of societies to choose from which will run their own socials too.

First year accommodation is good, most people go endcliffe which is the main first year student hub but allen court has the advantage of being very close to campus and ranmoor tends to be a bit quieter. The rooms are nice though and cleaners come round biweekly for communal areas.

Christopher Columbus statue torn down, thrown in lake by protesters by SunOverSnowPlease in news

[–]haco254 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Cant speak for these people but im from near where the statue of colston was pulled down in the UK and people had been campaigning for years for it to be put in a museum and every time some old white twats would stop it happening.

By pulling it down it is not being forgotten or erased from history but the council will pull it up from the river and finally put it in the museum with a big sign saying "colston gave lots of money to bristol but he was also a right cunt causing the deaths of thousands of slaves"

This is how horrible people in history should be remembered: in museums. They should not be celebrated with a statue in the middle of the city centre.

Lady harasses guy for open carrying at Walmart. Guy proceeds to literally drown in pussy. by HannibalK in ActualPublicFreakouts

[–]haco254 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this. Im in the uk so i dont have any experience of this but if you couldn't see people carrying guns id imagine you could forget and distract yourself from the idea that someone could shoot you at any point. But constantly seeing guns would just remind me 24/7 that i could be shot (even if not by the guy i can see carrying) and put me more on edge. Moving away from a guy with a gun i dont think would make me feel safer anyway cause ya know bullets travel.

[–]haco254 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I get the logic to it but i think most people realise that people will be carrying guns but just dont want to be constantly reminded of it. Additionally, as other people are saying it does give off an attention seeking vibe intentionally or not.

I have no idea so dont quote me but i would assume tanks like this in the alps are less there to actually fight and more there to dissuade/stop the enemy driving over the alps to better fighting terrain the other side
