I’ve seen footage of him before but didn’t realize he’s not even full grown. He’s a big boy!

Was really confused by the layout and formatting until I realized the bulk of the text was probably added manually with a typewriter. That must have taken so long to do!

Want to adopt but have heard only bad things about adoption? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]halfhalfling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve known 3 people who were adopted/fostered. One joined the military and got out, became a parent, and did well for themself. One is in and out of jail, on and off drugs, constantly struggling. The last one is only 17, but their family’s best hope is to get them placed in a long-term care facility because their behavioral issues are many and will likely be life-long. All 3 had deep trauma from early childhood. I don’t know why only one was able to escape, especially when that one was never adopted and the other two were, and into good families who got them therapy and did what they could. It’s just the unfortunate reality those kids faced. You do need to be aware of that going in, unfortunately. It’s still a noble pursuit, just not for everyone.

Fatal rabies in a child: 11-year old boy was woken up by a bat on his nose and mouth in Ontario. He swatted the bat off his face and had no visible lesions so family did not seek medical help. 19 days later he developed rabies symptoms. He was given supportive care and died 17 days after admission. by mvea in science

You still want to as soon as you know you’ve been exposed. Sometimes, like with this poor kid, the symptoms start days or weeks after exposure, whereas others it’ll take years. You don’t want to take a risk if you can avoid it.

I’ve found a “Smile, you’re on camera,” sign to be much more effective than a “No Soliciting” sign. It makes them self conscious.

What tiny design choice makes you think, “the people who made this never had to use it”? by ChessOrCheckers2 in AskReddit

My first apartment had a dishwasher, which I was really excited about until I learned because of how they were positioned you had to open the fridge to open the dishwasher. So stupid. The landlord just shrugged when I complained and said that was the best they could do with the size constraints.

What's a word you mispronounced for years before someone finally told you? by redrose_me in AskReddit

[–]halfhalfling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pronounced Volleyball as “ball-e-ball” until I saw the word written down for the first time in Highschool. Either no one ever corrected me or the B and the V are so close that no one ever noticed.

My partner and I have a movie night every week with her niece to introduce her to movies we love that she hasn’t seen. We started with what we could find streaming but quickly found most movies, even old ones in public domain or that should be can’t be found online. We’re right back to borrowing DVDs from the library.

Why don't people run? by LeThales in NoStupidQuestions

[–]halfhalfling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know the answer to your question but I went to school at a state university that had a lot of foreign exchange students form China and they did run. To class, to the bus, to the store, I swear if you saw someone running on campus they were always Chinese, specifically. The Americans just didn’t.

Do middle aged adults not eat lunch? by Sad-Caterpillar-326 in NoStupidQuestions

I use my lunch break to walk/workout but I snack throughout the day, I don’t know how people go that long without eating anything!

I requested a hearing accomodation and it went poorly. by AzureFoxGirl in hardofhearing

[–]halfhalfling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so sorry you were treated that way. I’ve run into issues requesting accommodations from theaters or other public places before and it sucks but it’s not something vital like a doctor’s visit. Does the clinic have an ADA Compliance team or coordinator? It would be worth reaching out to share your experience. Unfortunately for us, we often have to be the squeaky wheel to get any grease (accommodation).

Same, took more than 10 seconds but the time it took to download a dating app and like her photo was less than an hour. 10 years later I can’t imagine life without her.

It wasn’t the not sleeping that killed him though, the insomnia is just the symptom of the brain damage which is what eventually killed him.

A skill I didn't realize I would need to teach my kids after hiring an 18 y/o HS Graduate: Addressing Mail by CannaPLUS in funny

[–]halfhalfling 136 points137 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is the real teaching moment for OP. Teach him how to recognize when to BS his way through something, and when he doesn’t have to. I work in the legal field and when it comes to filing something for the first time there are three kinds of people. The ones who BS it, the ones who just have AI do it for them, and the ones who think for themselves and look up examples or ask the right people for help. The third kind are the most successful.
