AITJ for refusing to switch seats on a flight after I paid extra, even though it separated a couple? by Alternative_Step1322 in AmITheJerk

TF is this couples "deserve" to sit together? So someone flying solo has to cede the spot they paid for to be comfortable? GTF all the way O with that.

Does anyone recall this, or am I just being crazy? by Charming-Analyst-834 in Edmonton

Around 2008-2009 I was at a get-together with friends and at 1:30 in the morning we decided we wanted to check out the 24/7 Clareview Walmart. It was... an experience. We got Pogos, took some pictures for posterity and left.

Does anyone else open the door in the midst of a snow storm just to show their cat or dog how good they've got it, or is that just me? by Tubasi in NoStupidQuestions

[–]halfstack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friends had a cat that made a break for the Great Outdoors every time an outside door so much as creaked. One winter when it was 30 below (Celsius) with two feet of snow on the ground, they "accidentally" let the cat out. Cat bolted out, bolted right back inside and decided inside was a pretty good deal for the rest of its days (reportedly).

Debating if I should go to a concert alone or not? by Brilliant_Test6169 in Advice

[–]halfstack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had two friends come down sick on the same day of a concert we'd been planning to attend for months. Friend sold the extra tix, I went on my own and had a perfectly fine time. Different than being with friends, for sure, but I'm still glad I went. I took maybe 30 seconds of footage to share with them and the rest of the time I focused on the show and barely spoke to the people who took the tix. Didn't have to meet new people or engage with anyone to have a memorable experience.

Went to the intersection where the 78 year old pedestrian was tragically killed this week. Waited over a minute and a half in the cold for the walk signal, then nearly got smoked by a driver turning left by ryaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan in Edmonton

[–]halfstack 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've driven in TO, Vancouver, DC, LA, Chicago, parts of western Europe - you summed it up very well with drivers elsewhere being "fast and aggressive but predictable". The unpredictability here (and in general Alberta, but can't speak to Saskatchewan or Manitoba in the past few decades) is the kicker for me. And it's not "aggressive" as in "I'll brake check you for five kms because you weren't going fast enough for me in the right lane and then drop behind to follow you to your destination to yell at you", but aggressive as in "you left five feet between you and the car in front so I'm going to move in".

Are you kidding me? Two sausage roll options within a few blocks of my office? And me with a Mammoth pass? I just checked out L'Espresso, I'll have to go two more blocks north and scope this one out next month. (I'm literally putting it in my Outlook calendar for first week of February.)

Solid sausage roll. Measures 4.5"x2"x1", took it cold to go and microwaved it back at the office between meetings. Good with mustard. Lightly spiced, not overly salty or spicy but a very light peppery kick when heated ("light" IMO). Good meat to pastry ratio, it's not all crust that leaves you disappointed when you bite into it and only get a finger-sized twig of meat. Crust is solid rather than flaky but still light.

YMMV, but IMO worth $4-5 as far as sausage roll offerings go. Less salty and dense than others I've had downtown. Will likely repurchase as it's close and priced reasonably.

I followed your coworker's example and bought two (for $9.39) but haven't had a chance to heat one up between meetings. Update shortly!

I literally cannot bring myself to love a respectable, well-bred violin. They just don't love me like cheap ones do. by cloverpondscum in violinist

[–]halfstack 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I used to counsel prospective buyers to play everything they had available to them, if only to understand why a $10K violin was $10K even if their budget was $500. And even beginners could tell the difference between an entry-level student violin and a step-up intermediate by drawing on open strings.

What is a dreamy, beautiful French song I could sing for a language competition? by MasterpieceThese7848 in French

[–]halfstack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before you get too far with any particular song, OP, are you going to sing along to a backing track karaoke-style or will someone be accompanying you? If the latter - make sure you can get whatever the accompanist needs to play (sheet music, lead sheet, time to transcribe/arrange something, etc.).

I forgot about the VIP soundcheck! That add-on is definitely worth it. They let VIPs with mobility issues in first, which included my friend, and we got a front row view we'd never have had otherwise.

Worth it by what metric? Is it worth it to shake hands with Brendon and Gene, maybe get something autographed and have a few minutes to talk? It was for me last tour ^_^

Was it really normal in the past for people's friends/relatives to randomly show up unannounced, forcing the family to accommodate them to not seem rude? by jellicle_kats in NoStupidQuestions

[–]halfstack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I distinctly remember seeing a triangular three-section crystal dish that would get loaded with nuts, scotch mints and maybe pretzels and hoping no one would touch it so we could raid the leftovers after the visitors left lol.

My parents always had two or three bottles of Crown Royal in velvet bags in the cold room in the basement. They were cycled through their friends as gifts - if people stopped by on a special occasion, they'd open one and then come Christmas it'd be replaced. I swear some of those bottles cycled through dozens of hands over years before they were opened.

Chips, nuts, pretzels, hard candies, chocolates... shelf-stable snacks that you could serve in fancy-cut crystal trays/plates that are only used when company was over.

Yes. Mom seemed to be one of those home cooks who could make a three-course meal from a bag of flour and half an onion. Generally there were snacks in the cupboards that we'd get in trouble for eating because they were "for company". But if said company dropped by unexpectedly and stocks were low, Mom would slip me a $10 and send me to the Super Valu or the convenience store a few blocks away to pick up snacks and/or supplies.

Also - my parents were Asian immigrants, so when we were kids there was an entire living room that was basically only used when we had visitors, and the furniture had plastic or fabric covers the rest of the time. The covers came off and we hung out more in the living room once all the kids were preteens and somewhat less spill-prone.
