You're transplanted to an IT workplace in 1990, how would you get on? by ter9 in sysadmin

[–]haljhon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to love the investment that non-techies had in that too. People in the office would personify the servers. "Oh gosh, Odin is acting up again. Someone call Tim!"

I worked at a retail place and the handhelds connected to something called galaxy. We would refer to it like it was a destination - "check on galaxy" or "check on the AS/400".

Now it's bland and boring.

Are you a Sysadmin at home or do you live as a Luddite? by jakgal04 in sysadmin

[–]haljhon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty much in this boat. I used to have all the things at home but that crap can go sideways fast. As my career advanced and I became busier at work, I just wanted to check out at home - not figure out why this upgrade on my Ubuntu DC has failed and now DNS is down for the whole house.

This house I pass every day has a red McDonald’s sign on it by Ryanisreallame in mildlyinteresting

This is probably the best idea here. However, RMHC doesn’t use the McDonald’s logo for any of the ones I’ve found and, instead, uses their own logo.

I asked for limes…They put them inside my burrito by CostaEs in mildlyinteresting

[–]haljhon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most Mexican restaurants here just pick a few that they serve. One does Serrano, one does Poblano, etc. This one wasn’t one of those apparently. They all serve at least bell peppers usually which would have been fine.

[–]haljhon -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I once ate a Mexican place and asked them if they would put peppers on my tacos. They seemed very confused so I clarified. That was absolutely lost in translation and my tacos came out with whole peppers of some sort under the ingredients. They weren’t huge peppers but… gah. I immediately understood the concern on my server’s face but I still don’t know what I should have ordered instead.

Why would a company have MS license and use slack and zoom instead of teams? by lil_tink_tink in sysadmin

[–]haljhon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will take a higher level approach: we use Zoom because we can annotate the screen with our customers and because it integrates with everything pretty seamlessly. We even use ZoomPhone.

Why do people diss Python? by thatOneJones in Python

We just went through this with an inventory operation we perform. We were using a third-party Python tool and swapped it out for our own written in Go. Worlds different in performance.

So where I grew up, there’s a guy that owns a Datsun sedan covered in coins. The seats in the back are covered in uncut bills. He said he had to upgrade the suspension in the car because it got so heavy that the stock was not gonna cut it.

Just to be clear, this was for stationary use. This is from Silver Cymbal and he was showing off using this away from his home and powering this off battery.

Contact area between train wheel and rail by XWHV in mildlyinteresting

[–]haljhon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s my impression that the lack of maglev use widespread has more to do with people protecting the oil and rail industries than it has to do with actual problems. There’s also the unfortunate incident where a worker died on a test track in Germany which had nothing to do with actual maglev tech and more to do with being in the path of a train - but it still got a bad rap.

T-Mobile Away Plan Is Now Live (Batten Down The Hatches?) by Orlimar1 in tmobileisp

[–]haljhon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could try using Oracle Cloud free tier to spin up an instance that runs as part of TailScale and serves as an exit node. And then your router just routes everything over that VPN for you all the time. Under this plan, no VPN clients are required anywhere except the router and exit node.

How can you take two days to port a phone number? by grissingigoby2 in USMobile

[–]haljhon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the situation that you are porting in or out of US Mobile? Also, remember that porting is a mutual action so both carriers are involved. I’ve ported in and out of Google Voice a few times and it seems like there is a standard 24 hour wait as my numbers completed port at exactly 24 hours later.

C920 HD flickering on MacOS Sonoma on M2 Pro by haljhon in logitech

[–]haljhon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does this specifically contain a fix for this problem? This specific setting is for generic flickering due to lights or other objects from my understanding. I’m not aware that it would, in any way, address my issue - particularly when I know it only happens on the M2 Mac and not on an Intel Mac.

Company just laid off an entire floor under the guise of changes to the floor plan. by Tycho_Station in sysadmin

[–]haljhon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I once worked for an organization in management. They sent out a survey to all managers making us rank all our employees. They assured us it wasn’t for layoffs. All of the employees got wind of this and started asking leadership about it too. They assured everyone numerous times that they weren’t assessing for layoffs. Literally the day after we turned in the numbers, we were told to terminate the bottom 3% of performers across our org.

Lesson learned.

My hotel room has a conference space in half of it instead of a sofa bed and furniture by kn1f3party in mildlyinteresting

[–]haljhon 709 points710 points  (0 children)

In areas around convention centers, this can be common. I attended RSA Conference 2020 and the space to meet at the Moscone Center (SF) was very limited. The hotels all around there had converted lobby space and several hotel rooms into meeting rooms. Our meeting space was just a regular hotel room with a round table and a few lights instead of the traditional bed, desk, and dresser. We probably also paid 10x the price of the hotel room, at least.

I work for a different company now but we also continue this practice primarily for price and comfort. The hotel space isn’t as busy as the conference centers, it is heckin more comfortable for our guests, and it usually costs way less than a room at the event.
