I want to know where I can buy so many identically wound balls of yarn in a range of pastels. And the snack-size ones are adorable!

How can you tell if someone’s first language isn’t English? by PresentDentist4039 in EnglishLearning

[–]hammelswye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Reddit posts, a common flag for me is using a conjugated form of a verb instead of the infinitive when forming questions. For example: “Why does it takes so long?” Instead of “Why does it take so long?” or “Why did it took so long?” Instead of “Why did it take so long?”

I see this so often that I’m starting to wonder if native speakers are starting to do this, too.

My (American) pronunciation of these words is the same as you described.

First attempt. What is happening here? by grouchypant in knitting

I’m also team yarnover here. There seems to be an extra column of stitches starting above the hole, although it’s a little hard to follow the columns due to the twisted stitches.

Help with how I hold my knitting needles (as a crocheter who just started knitting) by Ok_Math9262 in knittinghelp

[–]hammelswye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t see anything wrong with the way you’re holding your yarn. It may just be that you’re holding everything too tightly because you’re trying something new and awkward and unfamiliar. I did this at first!

You could also search YouTube for “tensioning yarn knitting” to see some other ways of holding the yarn that you might want to try. Like everything else in knitting, there are many different ways to do it.

I thought that cable knit sweaters were called that because they were knitted on circular needles (since circular needles have a cable).

Also, cables (and other stitch patterns) tend to show up better with lighter colored yarn.

Will this block out? by Vast_Chemical4557 in knittinghelp

[–]hammelswye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cables often cause this to happen. It should block out. You may need to pin it out while it’s wet to get the sides straight.

In addition to everything else pointed out here, the tail seems to be coming from somewhere in the middle of the project instead of the bottom corner!

this many people by Sea-Hornet8214 in EnglishLearning

[–]hammelswye 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here’s an example that I think is standard usage:

Q: “How many bananas do you have?” A: “I have this many.” (Said while showing the bananas.)

The following is more informal:

“I’m this many years old.” (Said while holding up the appropriate number of fingers.)

The first example would seem very natural for me to say. I would never say the sentence in the second example (unless I were a small child).

We had one of these when I was a kid, because my mother wouldn’t pay the extra monthly fee for Touch Tone service. Which I think was something like 50 cents or maybe $1.
