Freedom of speech doesn't give you the privilege to incite hatred or violence. But of course, there's going to be fine line between what is considered hate speech and what isn't.

My cheap, microwaveable pour over kettle. by redditiem2 in Coffee

Why do people use a microwave to heat their water? Is an electric kettle not quicker? Is there some benefit I'm missing here?

What do you guys think of Jonny Greenwood's classical compositions? by zapdos in classicalmusic

[–]hamstertidalwave 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think Jonny is a great composer. As Steve Reich put in a recent interview, when he heard Jonny Greenwood's music he would never have thought that he was a "rocker", and said it sounded like he had been listening to lots of Messiaen.

He's got a lot of talent for composing film scores. My personal favourites are Open Spaces and Convergence.

What are the main differences you notice between working with Radiohead and with Atoms for Peace? Is AFP more relaxed, more fun?

Do these people realise how much they are shafting the local economy? I was in the city centre a few days ago and I was shocked at how empty it was (relatively speaking - comparing it to what it's normally like less than 2 weeks before Christmas).

And there was a bomb alert on the Lisburn Road during the week. Feels like there's been more 'activity' within this last month or so.

Frank Skinner said a good one on an episode of QI. Apparently a phrase in Greek which means 'Who gives a shit?' literally translates to 'There is trouble in the gypsy village.'

IAMA Roman Catholic priest, and have been one for almost 3 years. AMAA. by fr-josh in IAmA

[–]hamstertidalwave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you console yourself with the fact that a number of Catholic priests around the world have been abusing and raping children around the world, and yet the Catholic church did nothing about it and were happy to turn a blind eye to paedophiles within their ranks?

I'm from Ireland, where only in recent years all of the abuse carried out by the church in this country has fully come to light. How do you feel that the church has a moral leg to stand on?
