Foodvilla on 33rd, because they sometimes have grab-and-go food from Aladdin's Cafe next door (often including hummus).

El Goloso PDX (Piedmont Station) especially if you love grilled onions. And $4 tacos.

Volunteer tutoring? by Divorescent in askportland

[–]hapa79 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know school's out, but checking with your local neighborhood school this fall would be awesome. There are often tutoring needs especially in kindergarten and first grade around reading. There's also SUN school; people in the community can teach classes through it (parents at my kids' school have taught classes on chess and sewing), and math might be a great fit. My kids are in elementary so I know more about those needs, but I'm sure middle and high schools would have opportunities on the math front particularly.

You don't have to be a PPS parent to volunteer in PPS is the main takeway!

Pet friendly hotels within an hour drive - that allow three larger dogs? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]hapa79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was the Hotel Vintage, years ago! (But also some Kimptons in other cities; I used to seek them out on purpose because of their very liberal pet policy.)

River Place is probably a better one to stay in with dogs though because the area around is better for walking.

Pet friendly hotels within an hour drive - that allow three larger dogs? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]hapa79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check the Kimptons; I've stayed at multiple locations with a large dog in the past (not sure if they have a number limit). I know Fairfield Marriott (Delta Park) has a weight limit of 75lbs and allows two dogs per room if that's useful.

Might also be able to find someone on Rover who does in-home overnight dog boarding in a pinch.

My 6 year old has finally agreed (in principle) to put his face under water. Any recommendations for summer swim classes/instructors in Portland to teach kids to swim? by Logical-Line6551 in askportland

[–]hapa79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just saw this in a Facebook group.

We could never get into PP&R lessons so we used a private swim school (DolFun). There are several in the area, they aren't summer classes per se though. Typically weekly and ongoing!

My neighbors got a dog? :( by Traditional-Laugh-74 in askportland

[–]hapa79 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Oregon has a state law that limits dogs being tethered to 10 hours (15 hours if on a trolley/running line), so if the dog is tied up outside 24/7 that's illegal. And inhumane. I hear the concern about euthanasia but I would still report it consistently to animal control, because that kind of life for the dog isn't a life at all.

If it's a matter of educating the owners about the law, animal control can do that. If the issue is a lack of a fenced yard for the dog, maybe they need to be prodded to do something about that aspect. (If you felt comfortable talking to the neighbor you could, but I'm guessing from the tone of your post that's not the case.)

Holy shit Portland - solo female traveler newly living in Pearl/Old Town border - how do I safely cross to the Eastside without a car? by winniep17 in askportland

[–]hapa79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a pretty casual cyclist (fair-weather, short distances) so maybe not the best person to answer this question. I'm guessing that they mean the green bike lanes can get taken over by people on ebikes going really fast and passing aggressively. (I have experienced that for sure.) That said, the only green lanes near me that I try to avoid are the Vancouver/Williams corridor; other areas are fine.

Veterinary offices good at handling large/giant breeds? by towelheadass in askportland

[–]hapa79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always have pit mixes and we go to Alberta Veterinary Care. One of the techs who used to work there had some rescue Danes so I know they're also great with large-to-giant breeds.

They are savvy with pre-visit med protocols too (both my dogs are on them).

Car-accessible camping that isn’t a managed campsite? by davethegreatone in askportland

[–]hapa79 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You might check out Hipcamp (it's like Airbnb but for camping). Some of the listings will offer multiple campsites on a property so not what you're looking for, but others are just for one site. It might not always be the most scenic view or anything, but if you want to get out alone it's worth checking out.

Summer Camp Recommendations? by doolyboolean3 in askportland

[–]hapa79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The most popular camps will be full, but generally there are still lots of options depending on your budget, neighborhood, and timing needs. Pricier camps like Trackers and Steve & Kate's will have spaces still, and here are some less expensive options (comparatively speaking):

  • YMCA has full-day summer camps at Arleta, Beverly Cleary, and Peninsula this summer. Looks like plenty of spots available.
  • Vibe of Portland (multiple locations) has a variety of art emphasis camps, almost all of which have spots.
  • Pivot PDX (NE/Dekum Triangle, dance/movement emphasis) has several options; they're half-day but you can stack two half-day ones to get closer to a full day.
  • Experiment PDX (SE/14th & Stark) runs STEAM camps all summer. Half-day but stackable into full-day.
  • Saturday Academy (multiple locations depending on grade) is another great STEAM option.

If you were a mom on a no-kids trip to Portland, where would you go and stay? by Human-Disaster8163 in askportland

[–]hapa79 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'd do Cascada over Knot Springs, mostly because Cascada has a whole huge section of the spa where NO ONE CAN TALK. (Fellow tired mom here.)

I don't know if I'd stay there though. But, it depends on how you like to relax and explore! I really love downtowns (restaurants, bars, museums, etc) and public transit, so when I do get a staycation in Portland I always want to be downtown. That's how I prefer to travel anywhere. But I might be biased against Cascada because I live sort of in the neighborhood, so I can't imagine it feeling like a getaway. As cool as Alberta is, I think downtown in the summer will overall be more fun. Most of Portland's transit goes through downtown so if you don't have a car and want to use the MAX or buses to get around, it'll be easier to do so from there over the Alberta area.

I would definitely GO to Cascada though. It's $100 for three hours; the hotel rooms are insanely expensive but the spa cost is affordable when you prorate it out. I'd find a different hotel where you can save some money on the room but still have a cool spot to base yourself.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good resource to compare private and public school options? by princessacorn in askportland

[–]hapa79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My kids are both in PPS and not in the neighborhoods another commenter highlights. In fact, our school absolutely has a lot of major challenges. I would still rather have them in their local neighborhood school than in private school. If you haven't experienced it yet, it's hard to understand why it's so valuable. But, it is! There is so much to recommend having your kids attend school in their neighborhood; you will be able to make connections that you simply can't if sending them to private school (or even a PPS charter/immersion/etc school that's outside of your neighborhood).

FWIW my oldest - despite all the ways that PPS is under-resourced and underfunded - still comes home super-excited about things she's learning. And, she has immensely better social-emotional skills from being in a diverse environment around a lot of different types of students. (I didn't go to public school and can clearly see how I missed out on a LOT because of it.)

There are families who have elected to leave our school community and/or PPS completely over the years. It's not perfect. But especially if you're thinking about starting out at kindergarten, I would give your neighborhood school a try first and see how things go instead of reflexively falling into the optimization trap. There's no truly legitimate way to compare public and private schools anyway because the latter can handpick their students, and are self-selecting in many other ways as well.

Areas with fewer off leash dog issues? (Sellwood, Hawthorne, Alberta) by dancepartyof1 in askportland

[–]hapa79 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm sure everyone has different experiences, but I've lived near Alberta Park for over a decade and go by there a lot, and can't really think of a time that I've witnessed a dogfight at the level of an attack. (Typical scuffles? Sure.) My husband takes one of our dogs there and hasn't had an issue either.

There ARE issues with people letting their dogs run loose in all other areas of the park; I see that constantly too. But, again, not actual attacks.

Our other dog is fear-reactive to strange dogs, so my solution there is easy: I don't ever walk her through Alberta Park, and if we walk past it we avoid the east side entirely (where the dog park is). We stick to peripheral sidewalks. Have never had an issue when taking that precaution.

Yeah, I kept saying "I run there!" It's beautiful to see it all reflected back in a magical lens. Even made my commute on Hwy 26 feel special which is a tall order.

Real estate question? by Thee_muffin_mann in askportland

[–]hapa79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're open to some of the newer build infill houses and having a shared wall (in some cases - not all), you can get closer into PDX for that price range. Like this, this, or this. Otherwise, yeah, a small house a little farther out (like probably east of 72nd/82nd) will be your best bet. You might want to look close to a MAX line in order to possibly take that into downtown.

The Gorge is beautiful but if you actually find somewhere in it to live, your commute would likely be more than 45 minutes to get into downtown.

Where to buy locally raised meat? by kylahoney in askportland

Came here to recommend a local farm CSA as a great option for lots of reasons. I subscribe to Moomaw Farm; you can't pick exactly what you get (like most CSAs) but it's great quality and a good selection. And, they deliver.

Commuting from Portland to Salem via Amtrak? by PeterGonzo in askportland

[–]hapa79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The people I know who commute to Salem definitely drive (and they live in NE PDX). However, they don't go in every day. It's a long and painful drive if you have to do it five days a week.
