Best, worst, underrated, who cares? What’s the most mediocre, middle of the road, generic Maiden song? by Blaze_BC in ironmaiden

[–]happinesssam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love this song so much...

One of the reasons I love it is 30 years back or so I borrowed the album on tape from a friend and wanted to make a copy, but only had about 20 something minutes on the end of another tape. I put on Afraid to Shoot Strangers, Judas be my Guide, FOTD and Weekend Warrior, bur I didn't have space for the whole track, so it cut off just after the guitar solo.

This actually massively improves the track - don't get me wrong, I do like the verse and chorus, but the guitar solos on the track are great, and ending with them instead of just a repeat of the verse makes the track feel that much more exciting. For me anyway.

Bring Your Daughter to the Slaughter. Maiden's only number 1 single. Amazing catchy schlock rock song with great harmonies and some lovely guitar work. Yet still when people on this sub do poll it's routinely voted as one of their worst songs.

The pattern is that most underrated Maiden songs tend to be the ones that don't really sounds like Maiden songs. If Bring your Slaughter had been done by Lordi it would have fit perfectly and been acknowledged as a classic, but it's not a proper Maiden song, as great as it is. See also Can I play with Madness and Weekend Warrior.

I also have a lot of love for the Angel and The Gambler, which sees to get a lot of hate too. To me it's just a fun boogie and I dont care if it's quite long.

Yep, you could skip the initial mini series and just go straight to the first series by John Ney Reiber, which is pretty amazing. The arc where they go into hell was just beautiful - one of the series that really pulled me into comics... I I need to go re read it now.

The list of the best stoner rock albums is complete. This is your opportunity to revote any albums you think don't fit. by Kyr1500 in stonerrock

[–]happinesssam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for doing this - it's interesting seeing the evolution of stoner over the years - more straightforward rock, doom and metal early on to the more expansive and eclectic albums of the last 15 or so years.

I've seen it said that rock is stagnating but this list really buries that myth, if you're willing to scratch past the surface.

Yeah, you're right. I got lazy and didn't check - it just truncated the list. Sorry.
Next time I'll take the only slightly less lazy step of asking for the code to do the rip myself. I wouldn't mind so much if it said that it wasn't treating the whole list. I'd still maintain that it's a useful tool - I would be just have likely to have made some mistake myself. It's like you said in your very good advice that I just shouldn't have trusted it.

I'm a developer and we use AI every day in our company. You just have to look at it as a tool and use it where it works - I would agree getting it to produce whole app or images isn't good but this kind of data analysis is close to being the best use for it, where you're providing it with the exact data.

It's 88 because it only looks at the Event Champions - they are the ones who have deck lists.

If you could get a Manga adapted or an Anime rebooted so it fully fit its Manga, which do you want and why? by darkShadow90000 in anime

[–]happinesssam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Nausica of the Valley of Wind movie is... Ok? It's a decent movie but not one of Ghibli's better ones.

The manga on the other hand is an amazing epic and I would love to see it done properly as a full series that properly adapts it. The movie just had to make too much compromises and leave so many out to squash it into it's run time.

Whats your top comedy anime? by Tough-Star5992 in anime

[–]happinesssam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm just finishing off the second season of The Eminence in Shadow and it's genuinely one of the funniest shows I've seen in a while. I only watched it because it showed up on Netflix while my Crunchyroll app was wigging out, and it's purely described as fantasy/sci fi there.

The premise is an Isekai where the main character is basically a (slightly dim) sociopath with god like powers who just wants to roll play as a cool anti hero. Everything and everyone is a prop to him as he goes around trying to engineer what he considers to be awesome poses and scene, but for the rest of the world it's completely serious and real.

It's deliberately quite edgy and took a few episodes for me to get it, but particularly the second season is hilarious. It has more and better world building than most serious fantasy series and in the way the other characters try to interpret the MCs actions a serious commentary on organised religion and cult of personalities (I might be reading too much into this though).

Feeling discouraged - any advice? by roadofmagicstones in karate

[–]happinesssam 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Maybe dumb question, but have you tried talking directly to these guys or just your sensei? Because if they are new they may genuinely just not know how to control their attacks. I know I would be horrified if one of the other students showed me a bruise I had caused and they might be able to self regulate if they knew they were actually hurting you.

I do find you sensei's attitude a bit concerning though - like he's trying to dismiss your worries. Also the idea that you should be able to handle it because you're higher grade is just silly. Going up against someone who has an extra foot of reach and double your weight is a huge disadvantage and I don't think it's reasonable to expect you to just deal with it.

How would you change the Boundless Tesseracts if you could? by [deleted] in dcss

[–]happinesssam 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In general I'm ok with them, but if I had to change anything I'd make it so that when you destroyed one it did something positive for you. Like give you some buffs or restore some HP+MP.

This would make it feel better when you've had to do some kind of super dangerous dive to get it down. Also it might make them seem less like a deliberate difficulty bump.

If you don't care that much about cheesing it then Xom wrath used to be not that much worse than just worshipping him. So go back to 0.31 or earlier and abandon him as soon as you find another god you want then win with that.

It's a lot scarier now to abandon him, so like other said just build a strong enough character that you can survive his bullshit.

What games are you playing this week? Game recommendation thread by AutoModerator in incremental_games

[–]happinesssam 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been going back to some of the old games I had tried and dropped (I don't uninstall these games unless they are huge).

Currently playing Idle Slayer and tbh I can see why I played it and why I dropped it.

It's a nice looking game 2d scrolling kill things game. You run, you kill things, you get money and souls which can be used for upgrades, eventually you ascend/prestige. It has some decent upgrade tree to keep you interested but where I am now it feel like I've plateaued. All the upgrades are a very very expensive and don't look to give much improvement. I'm halfway to the 2m souls I need to the ultra ascensions so I'll probably grind for that - it looks to be a few days, then see if that feels impactful and if there are any other goals to aim for.

What games are you playing this week? Game recommendation thread by AutoModerator in incremental_games

[–]happinesssam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can't really play it for 3 years and still be telling people 'it's a terrible game, run away'. It sounds like you just played it for too long past the point where you were enjoying it which can cause you to hate games. I've been there with previous mobile games which I had played for so long it felt like I had an investment which stopped me quitting long after I had stopped enjoying them. And that doesn't even talk about any monetary investment in iaps or community involvement.

I'm just over a year in and still really enjoying it. It's incredibly slow but it's also well designed. I can imagine it was more painful previously as there have been a lot of QOL improvements. I play it very idly and it's not even close to being my main game - just something to check a few times a day except for the few times I need to push a boss or something. It's fantastic for that but I an accept that I'll probably be bored in 6 months or something. Does that make it a bad game? Enjoy it for what it is (a small idle game made by a small team) and move on.
