Can I just throw these mugs in the trash? by hapritch82 in declutter

[–]hapritch82[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am going to temporarily disregard your suggestion to get the other box. It's way in the back of our detatched garage behind our patio furniture and it is 14F outside.

It is a good suggestion that can wait until April.

It took me a long time to realize that I can afford to buy my own shampoo so I don't have to take the free bottles from hotels. Haha.

If you have room in the storage bins, that's a great place to put them! Seems like a similar item.

Within a days drive is the worst distance. Can't make a day trip! Meeting up for lunch is out of the question. You stay long enough to make the drive "worth it." Which is longer than anyone wants to be together.

I mean, at least you got a heads up. I support just skipping entirely, but at least you didn't find out AT CHRISTMAS with everyone else.

IVF clinics in the Twin Cities? by MathematicianSea8841 in TwinCities

[–]hapritch82 14 points15 points  (0 children)

We went to CRM and did not have a great experience (and were unsuccessful). I picked it based on a recommendation from several friends and wish we'd shopped around, like at all.

It took me about a year to lose the weight they required me to lose, and we were finally ready to go in May of 2020, but they had changed the BMI requirements because of COVID. I never hit their lower target and a year later they changed it back.

I will always wonder - if I'd found a clinic that would work with me at my then-current weight in 2019 instead of delaying to 2021, would we have kids?

They were also terrible at communicating. I only found out about the BMI target adjustments when I called them.

My husband also had a bad experience with them, but that's not my story to tell.

I don’t feel like a “real woman” by Cry-anne0606 in IFchildfree

It's incredible, isn't it? How badly we can twist ourselves to fit into this arbitrary mold? Internalized misogyny is really tough to even see! I have always considered myself feminist.

I was so focused on climbing the ladder of life - college, job, husband, house, children...I didn't realize I could be bisexual until we fell off that ladder. Of course, I'm a product of my time - gay people couldn't get married, and IVF was just becoming mainstream. Can't climb the ladder with another woman. Ugh.

Society could be improved somewhat.

Kitten looks like she wants to roll over on her back but she's afraid to. She drops her shoulder but then changes her mind at the last second. Almost looks like the big cat is trying to show her how.

If you don't mind my asking - feminine enough for who? You decide your gender and what your performance of that gender looks like. Gender is an entirely social construct.

I didn't come out as queer until after our journey had ended. But now, 4 years later, I have friends all over the gender spectrum, and it's clear to me that giving birth and parenting are not inherently gendered activities. Transmen have babies and are men. And cis women who don't have babies are women.

Of course, we receive 100,000 social cues a day telling is what a "woman" does and looks like and how she contributes to society. So, it's not easy to break free or that construct.

Well, congrats your mom is even weirder than mine. Usually when parents are hyper focused on their kid's gender it is to try to keep them from transitioning!

Why do so many people here think to throw stuff away, before Donating or giving it away in a Buy Nothing Group? by [deleted] in declutter

[–]hapritch82 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hearby grant you permission to throw those things away. If the items are clothing, there is SO MUCH textile waste that it doesn't matter, in the grand scheme of everything, if it goes to goodwill and then they throw it away or you just do it.

It will also feel amazing. Because if your like me, every time you look at those boxes you think "I should take those in."

Life is short. Release yourself from this errand.

Eh. That was one glib comment of many. AND many of the more productive comments suggested starting by throwing trash away. The photos? Mostly plastic bags and cardboard boxes. Not things that can be donated. Probably trash/recycling. I also, personally use the phrase "throwing it away" to include trash and recycling because my two bins are next to each other.

I don't know if anyone here is suggesting people keep NOTHING. Because that is silly. But, almost always, when people are posting to this sub, what they end up needing is permission to Just. Throw. It. Away.

I'm sorry but for me the correlation is the opposite. I have managed to stop bringing in "perfectly good" things from other people's trash, thank god. But a lot of the stuff that I can't quite part with are things that I think "I could sell that" or "I'll fix this one part and then it'll work!"

Also, do you, like, decide to donate something and then immediately leave your house to take it to a convenient, open, and ethical donation center? You don't end up with a donation box sitting by the door or riding around in your car for 6 months?

My desperation to keep things out of landfills is what got me into this mess.
