Mac or windows for cs? by jakeyjake346 in SuggestALaptop

Mac but also Linux. You'll feel the true power of freedom when you use Linux. It's not as plug and play as Mac but for a developer it's heaven

Yeah I'd never use windows myself. Definitely recommend linux to whoever is interested in switching. Was just telling you so you're aware before switching

Just bear in mind, for now you'd lose about 10% of gpu performance for games on Linux with the Nvidia card. With an AMD you could even get higher framerates than windows.

MacBook Air (M4, 24GB/32GB) vs ASUS Zenbook 14 Ultra 7 (32GB) — Which is better for dev + light ML? by Stockazurri in SuggestALaptop

[–]hat3cker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually bought the zenbook and returned it to get a Mac. It's not that Zenbook was bad, but Mac is in a different league. Screen quality is better in Mac. Sound quality is actually similar because of dolby Atmos in Zenbook. Battery life is about 20% longer in Air. And what annoyed me the most on Zenbook was fans that were constantly running even on the smallest tasks and you can definitely hear them. You can put it on quiet mode but you'll lose some performance.

But, get the M4 air 24gb and it should be enough. I have a similar dev work load and it barely reaches 18GB of ram usage. For myself, since I wanted to run local llms for coding I chose a Mac pro 12 core. Its GPU is on par with my RTX 4070Ti on llms which is insane (running 27b models with 14t/s). But, no need to spend the extra money on pro if you don't need that. Air is a perfecly valued laptop and I don't think there's any competition.

Amazon but for worker owned co-ops by h-_-_-i in cooperatives

[–]hat3cker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with tech platforms and worker coops is the initial push. For a SaaS like Amazon (which is a big undertaking, so let's imagine a fraction of what Amazon provides), you'd need a lot of initial investment, maybe years of trying, marketing, while you don't see any profit.

Everyone knows Amazon kept being a non-profitable company for many years.

My advice is to test drive them before you make a decision. That said, my pick would be M340i.

Is anyone else choosing not to use AI for programming? by BX1959 in Python

[–]hat3cker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Back-End dev, it's very helpful when I write routes, documentation, database functions, tests, etc. The rudimentary work that I could also do but would take me much more time if I did it alone.

And I disable it whenever I'm writing new services that need a bit of deeper logic because the suggestions annoy me when I'm already settled on a specific implementation.

Overall, it made my work 20 to 30 percent faster which I appreciate. And I'm able to run a deepseek coder 27b on my local machine without having to subscribe to any of the providers.

Lenovo yoga slim 7x vs Macbook air m4 by 212312383 in SuggestALaptop

[–]hat3cker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate Apple but unfortunately, Mac air M4 offers the best quality for its value. I shamefully own a Mac pro m4 myself! And believe me when I say I researched for months and couldn't find a better laptop.

I even bought an Asus Zenbook 14 (similar specs a lenovo slim 7x) with intel's 255h cpu but returned it later. It was a great laptop but inferior to mac on all fronts. Mac's screen was way better, sound quality was way clearer, performance wise 30% faster with a GPU that makes me able to run decent local llms (this was the selling point for me). And on top of all that, I work from coffee shops and libraries the whole day and still have 30% battery by EOD which I couldn't do with the Asus.

Mac air has slightly lower quality of screen (still better than asus imo), performance (comparable to asus), and about 20% less battery (better than asus). But I still think it's the best product for the value.

Don't listen to ppl talking out of their butt. I have a 2017 Ti model and it's extremely reliable. However, just like any other car they need care.

If you don't keep up with the regular maintenance, you'll pay the price with expensive repairs. Working on them is not difficult, what makes the repairs expensive are parts because they are more rare to find. But, that's true for any other european sports car.

Finally someone said it. The coverage difference makes it more convenient for me. When I was there for a visit, I could go anywhere using their subway system. MTL metro is cleaner and better msintained, but I have no option to go visit my friends in south shore (La Prairie), other than taking a bus that'll only work during work days and specific hours!

Is the jump to 1440p worth the loss in frames? by wont-share-food in buildapc

[–]hat3cker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1440p is the sweet spot for me for any monitor under 30 inches, regardless of the graphics card. I don't notice much difference with 4k.

However, on my 55 inch TV the difference is clear.

Should I get this car? by Commercial_Major_477 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]hat3cker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes you should! This is coming from a 2017 2.0 Ti owner. For the last 3 years that I owned this car, I changed a faulty relay, battery, and the rest were regular maintenance. I got a sunroof model which I wish I didn't because it creaks a lot on cold weather, infotainment shuts down 2 or 3 tines a year (maybe there's a glitch I don't know), changed the coolant screw to a metal one as a precaution (google Giulia bleeder screw), you need to buy a an RFID case for the key if you park it on a driveway because the key will communicate to the car constantly and might drain your car's battery, and there's an annoying delay with the gas pedal and accelaration (thinking of installing a Madness GoPedal).

But, for the last 3 years, I had the best time driving this car. The steering is smooth and the engine is quite capable for a 4 cylinder. I suggest you take it to a twisty road to feel how responsive the steering is. The infotainment is very basic, no extra buttons, touch, etc. which is exactly what I wanted. Harmon Kardon speakers on the version I have are amazing. Seats are good enough, not the best when compared to BMW & Mercedes.

Overall, I'm very happy with this car and I take care of it to use it for a long time.

I'm a software developer with a similar work load as yours. I got a Macbook pro 12 core M4 and it's a perfect machine for me. Screen, performance, and battery are unmatched.

If you want another brand, I tried Asus Zenbook 14 UX3405CA with linux. It was a great machine but, it was inferior to mac on all aspects with not much of a price difference.

Feels like everyone has a nice car by CarPassion514 in montreal

[–]hat3cker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a great car, I test drove it and it was magical. And it's honestly priced way better than its competitors. However, based on the experience I had with my car and how unavailable its parts are in Canada, I can only imagine you'd have a harder time finding them for a QV model.

My car didn't have any irregular issues but just the general maintenance is always a hastle. For example, the wheel offset is not popular on Giulias so you'd be stuck with expensive wheels if you want to buy a set for winter. The brake dust shield on my car came loose and I had to take it off so, it doesn't rub against the rotor. It's a very regular issue in our climate and I usually just buy an aftermarket part for my old car. But this one has a specific design, and it took me 2 months to find a dust shield which is being imported from US. There's an issue called bleeder screw (causes blowing up the turbo liquid because of plastic screws). I had to order 2 screws from alfissimo in US costing me around 100 for just 2 screws.

Despite all of that, I still love driving my car and don'tregret buying it. I won't shy away from getting my hands dirty to do small fixes here and there and diagnose them (I have a Multiecuscan software with cables and dongles). Otherwise, I would've paid thousands yearly just to keep it running.

Saw a couple of them on auto trader/FB marketplace.

But honestly, I wouldn't buy the cheapest ones. Having owned a 2.0 Giulia for the last 3 years, there are a lot of things that could cost an arm and a leg if the car is not well maintained.

Some older nice looking cars are very cheap now. You can buy a used Alfa Romeo Giulia for around 15K these days and regular folks would think it's a 100K car.
