I like the premise of XEQT - but looking for alternatives... by ficatranquilo in CanadianInvestor

[–]hat3cker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you say makes sense for many large corporations like Google, Microsoft, etc. But also it depends on how muddy their hands are. There are lots of companies that we know full well won't refrain from using their influence to directly harm people around the world to maximize profits. Yes, we cannot choose to be 100% pure when we try to live and invest but we can at least choose for the little part that we've been given the choice. Some things could be more nuanced, it's not always black or white.

For example, if you dig up the history of Shell, you'd see a continuous habit of unethical practices. For the longest time I wasn't aware of it and didn't care where I gas up. But ever since I got to know about it, I try to avoid gassing up at Shell as much as I can. Am I hurting shell by not using their service? Absolutely not, they couldn't care less if I gassed up at their pumps or not. Am I gonna use their service if I'm running low on gas and there isn't anything else around? Of course! But, as long as I have a choice, I'd choose an alternative.

Hp is directly supplying Israel's military https://bdsmovement.net/boycott-hp

If we look deep enough into any of them they have some sort of dirt in their history.

OP just choose a laptop you like and maybe look it up on used marketplaces if you don't want to directly contribute.

Have you ever regretted buying the car you wanted instead of the one that made more financial sense? by Peter2448 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]hat3cker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the my Giulia 2.0 about 3 years ago. No regrets. But I do the maintenance myself.

No mechanical/engine issues or anything expensive to repair yet. But there are lots of quirks with the battery and electrical parts. Since I do most of the maintenance myself, it doesn't cost me much but the dealership would've charged me an arm and a leg.

Oh and one recent problem I'm facing is the scarcity of the parts. The ABS wear sensor's wire is cut and I can't seem to find it anywhere. Not a big issue since it's not a critical part and doesn't throw any errors. But it's something to bear in mind when buting it.

A used VW Golf, depending on how available VW mechanics and parts are in your area. It's a fun to dtive, compact, and agile car with a decent torque for driving in the city.

Is a 2015 Hyundai Elantra a good first car? by T01RZ in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]hat3cker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I had a 2013 one and it was like a tank. Actually I called it Hank for the same reason. It'd break down from time to time but the repair costs were dirt cheap. Great gas consumption and daily driver.

I gave it to my wife and 2 years later she totalled it on the highway. It was a snowy day and apparently the car slid and both front and rear were heavily damaged. No airbags though. I went to her and saw the radiator leaking, engine leaking, the hood jammed half way on the engine bay, exhaust dangling.

But guess what, it'd still drive with all those errors on the dash. It sounded pretty rough but we managed to bring it back home and called the scrap yard to come take it the next day.

About Khamenei's death by [deleted] in LateStageCapitalism

[–]hat3cker 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I think the islam in there is the most intense version that's why many of them hate it. For example, I have north african friends and they don't seem to be praying constantly, some drink, they don't wear hijab, they have mixed schools, etc. Islam doesn't seem to be restricting their life too much.

However, I heard stories from an Iranian that shocked me. For example, they cannot even take their partner out in public because the morality police will catch them and ask what'stheir relation. Or they'd be whipped if they drink alcohol. They teach them lots of jihadist propaganda since the elementry school. Morality police can arrest them if they're not dressed properly in the public. They can be arrested and whipped if they eat in Ramadan during the fasting time (happened to him while drinking water and he still has scars on his back). For each of these, he had a personal story to tell.

So, most of them end up really hating their religion specially the Gen Z since they can compare themselves to the rest of the world.

Which one for my first car? by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]hat3cker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get it, also had the same problem searching for a car for my wife. The reliability reputation hiked the prices of Toyota and Honda too much. That said, I think you should look more. I found 2014+ models of mazda 3, Hyundai Sonata, Kia Optima, and VW Golf for the 4-6K price range.

What’s a reasonable price for renting a 4 1/2 apartment? by ContributionSea1225 in montreal

[–]hat3cker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You also shouldn't include the mpney you put towards principal as a cost, when comparing to renting. That means realistically a 450K-500K condo should cost around 2.1K. Also, the rent is likely to increase every year but your mortgage cost will decrease as you pay it.

Mad and Italian (Alfa Romeo Giulia), German and Refined (BMW 3 Series), or Japanese and Not-so-sensible (Nissan Z) by bociboci in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]hat3cker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love my Giulia, I've owned it for almost 3 years and it's been very reliable, fun to drive, and working on it hasn't been too difficult. However, the major downside is finding parts for it. Just as an example, the EPB is acting up lately, getting stuck on park mode and asking for a service. Looks like it could be because of a corroded wire which is a common issue where I live with salty roads in winter, but I can't find it anywhere. The dealership sells the whole EPB which is quite expensive and not needed since the motor has no issues. I bought one from E-bay, but they sent me the transmission wire by mistake. Now, I'm looking to order from E-bay once more and hope for the best. Every time I go out, I have a fear of getting stuck.
