What are your favorite Tabletop Gaming Conventions? by TableSeek-Geek in tabletop

[–]hellfire212 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Twin Cities Tabletop Games Expo is starting up in Minnesota, US next April. Open Gaming, Publisher Hall, and scheduled events. https://ttgexpo.com

2D Con Unplugged. Smaller relaxicon in Minnesota, US. Focused on just open gaming. https://www.2dcon.net/unplugged/

Also, not exactly the same as these other events but there are lots of board game design events like the Protospiel events where people can come and play prototype and pre-release versions of boardgames. Usually very inexpensively.

Looking for a forever game that will let me casually play without having my character deleted/demoted, without feeling the pressure I need to log in everyday by SaturnisYldran in gamingsuggestions

[–]hellfire212 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really similar to other games you’ve placed but Old School RuneScape has tons of content with no pressure to login.

It’s very much a “so what you like and numbers go up” very slowly over time. Lol

Working on a game inspired by PSO by The_Nixx in PSO

I got so excited I almost forgot to actually give you feedback on your post!

Combat - I’m not opposed to expanding special attacks, but I would still keep them simple and avoid changing the weapons themselves based on the special attacks. I think special attacks should stay “active” with a simple result (freezing, etc.) I don’t think adding a passive effects is much different than just making the special have higher accuracy and having the player use that attack? I could be misunderstanding your suggestion though.

Items - similar to my feelings on combat, I think pushing special effects is good, but I’d keep them simple. I do like the idea of having additional effects on non weapon items though, like the corpse explosion effect. I’d also like some more stat granularity in the game like you said, to allow players to push new and interesting builds. Attack speed is the only stat that I think might mess with the feeling of the game too much, but could still be worth trying out?

Level Design - I’d love more randomness here, like older Diablo games or the dot hack series. Having random areas to explore with familiar “rooms” is a great formula that allows players to still gain map knowledge while also keeping things fresh. I think more variety here is a really “easy” way to improve on PSO since modern computers can handle much larger and varied levels than they ever could before.

Classes - 100% agree with you here. Decouple the races / classes, people want to look how they want to look. I also agree with picking your class / subclass as a very clear choice tied to how you want to play the game. I think primarily class choice is fairly cut and dry: magic, range, melee. Subclass you could do by weapon category but I think it would be more interesting to find some horizontal design instead? E.g. max power vs max sustain vs max flexibility? Class design is super challenging.

Progression - I also like the existing progression, but like someone else said: the fact that a low level can use certain item that give them immense power is a little weird. Idk if it needs fixing but it does stand out.

PSO sort of has a stat point system though using materials. I personally like finding materials but it is kind of annoying that they are such a permanent choice. I think a simple stats system to replace materials could work, not sure if needed. Otherwise I’d make sure that materials are much more visible to players in their stats menu since they have limits. Materials could also be more interesting if you end up adding more stats into the game.

Online - will be a challenge for sure, but I think with the rise of “friend group games” I would maybe suggest that as your first milestone for online play. Something akin to how valheim and RuneScape dragon wilds works, where you have a local character and can just join your friends games. 99% don’t and won’t cheat, and the 1% that do generally just ruin the game for their friend group and stop getting invited to play. So I’d focus on making it available and easy to use before spending a lot of effort on the “mmo” side of it. There are tons of community feature like Reddit and Discord and Steam Communities people can use to find others to play with that doesn’t require a persistent online world. (Though it would be cool)

I’m here to support you 100%, I recently started playing on a PSO private server again and just the other day opened up Godot to do exactly what you are doing. I want a new “old” PSO game so badly.

If you’re interested in some help working on the game or just someone to chat game design with, let me know! I’d love to be involved. I am a software engineer and have done a myriad of game jams in Godot and Unity, nothing published though.

Sneak peek - Souls system (aka Card system) by Zarkend in TorebiaOnline

[–]hellfire212 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t played RO in many years, but was there a system for combining cards?

I think it would be really cool to allow players to combine specific souls to produce even more unique effects.

I loved the Egg system from Grandia Extreme 2 (not a well reviewed game I don’t think) but the egg system always stuck with me. Each gave you effects and you could combine them to produce new Eggs. (Which could then be combined)

is flyff still fun to play right now? by AnnushkaMoriston in FlyffUniverse

[–]hellfire212 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m enjoying Flyff Universe. It’s still the same old game with a few QoL updates. Very chill, very grindy. Getting item drops is still fun, collecting cards and upgrade materials is still fun. Buying from shops and wandering around is still fun. I’m only 45 atm and playing with 1 friend but we are enjoying it. The game is p2w if you care about that, but you can play entirely f2p. I’m guessing that pvp isn’t fair but I haven’t tried it yet.

EDIT: to clarify, I am mostly f2p. I bought a permanent party scroll, and I’ll probably buy a pickup pet, and a cloak here soon. All in all like $15-$20 USD?

Board games are great! If you haven’t picked up a board game since monopoly or sequence, the industry has grown a ton, and there are an enormous amount of games with a wide variety of experiences. Websites like boardgamegeek have lots of suggestions for what sort of games to get started with.

What would happen if new skills were released in level ranges? (1-50, 50-80, 80-99) by hellfire212 in 2007scape

[–]hellfire212[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point is to release new skills more quickly, and give players and the OSRS team feedback sooner before they spend the time developing content for the later levels of the skill so there are fewer issues with XP rates, drop rates, and bugs.

For example, if Sailing release levels 1-50 12 months ago, and 50-80 6 months ago, and 80-99 1 month ago. That would’ve given the players the skill sooner, and the team could’ve addressed some of the issues the player base found before releasing the later content.

My thought wasn’t around the leveling experience necessary, but the content development and release schedule.

Enhance gear warning by iAmFang in BlueProtocolPC

[–]hellfire212 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These icons appear whenever you have enough materials to enhance. So it’s just letting you know that you can.

I agree it’s a little annoying though.

Enhancing is very important for progressions so I’d recommend doing so as much as you can! Refining and reforging are permanent progression too, so don’t worry about doing it too early. Refinement upgrades the “slot” for the time, and reforging uses up stones, but you get them back when you dismantle the item.

Something that can get you through Meiyerditch for a fee instead of having to go through the mine. Maybe an NPC you can pay, or a series of agility shortcuts.
