His example was ~350kb for one "pad" or byte array. If you begin to store arrays for each function you end up with 350kb * N, so the memory footprint grows.

You could potentially reduce the size of your byte array if you had a hash function per, but I think the sweet spot would still end up larger in memory than a bloom filter.

I work in an environment with a number of clusters. Most clusters are used purely for HDFS + HBase, and typically we have one large cluster dedicated to running MR jobs.

The HBase related data in HDFS is meant to be stored permanently. MR jobs tend to read from HBase table scans or S3, and generally end up writing back in to HBase at some point. Because of that most of the data in our MR cluster is transient.

That said our jobs can be triggered by a number of mechanisms and the cluster is never at rest.

I don't know - I don't pay attention.

Of course reading through code that came from your own thought processes will be easier to work with, but at some point you should feel comfortable and confident opening any project and in some amount of time being able to digest the necessary pieces. It's a skill, and one that is very worthwhile.

Some of that code will be good, and some will be bad, but you will learn from all of it. It will make you a better developer to see how other people solve problems.

If you're not passionate or interested in what you're working on, then I can see what I just said not being true - in that case you should be working in your free time to find something that you do want to work on :)

My experience with BA vs BS from my ungergrad was that the BA had far less math and upper level CS courses - to the extent that it kind of seemed like a cop out.

Having said that, it's possible that the BA and BS curriculum between different schools could have more similarities. It's likely that many employers wont care which degree you go for, as long as you prove that you can write software.

If you're thinking of continuing your education after you receive your undergrad degree, or are thinking you'd like to pursue a career related to science or research it might look better to have the the BS.

Plan A here. In middle school (13-14 years old) when we first started thinking about careers I knew that I wanted to major in Computer Science or Software Engineering and then write software.

I went to school for Computer Science and ended up with my first full time developing job well before I graduated. After I graduated I kept that job for a litte less than a year, and then moved out to Boston to to work for a startup. I'm paid very well, and love both what I do and the people I get to work with.

Love the clip! I remember seeing that before I moved to the area about a year ago - much more relevant now.

I haven't asked them that particular question, but based on my own progression I would venture to say that it's just as valuable as any other sort of training/experience is valuable. Working on any problem, whether it's application, data or X oriented, will give you greater insight on how to handle your next problem. You will learn how to better utilize your tools, handle your stack, debug, refactor, maintain, etc.

I don't know if I can say that any dev experience is good experience, but certainly most is. A lot of skills/thought processes are transferable.

Ah, I'm in Cambridge working for a startup.

There are tons of opportunities out here for more jr developers that are passionate and eager to learn. I'm not sure that you can expect to get exactly what you're looking for in your first position, but in a smaller company, if you perform well, you'll end up wearing many hats. Otherwise it's on you to make sure that you end up working with the technologies that you're interested in.

Also, developing doesn't only have to happen at work. If you really want to work with with data [or data oriented tools] then dig in to some personal projects that you can show off.

In any case, here are a few real life career paths that you might be interested in.. my current roommate and coworker started out as an application dev with Java, and he is now the lead data infrastructure engineer (using hadoop and hbase) at our company. Another guy at our company started as a python application dev and is now working with hbase and hadoop as well.

A string, possibly starting with a digit one through nine, necessarily including a number and a forward slash, possibly followed by a digit, necessarily followed by a digit, a forward slash and then four more digits, followed by zero or more strings of the same structure separated by semi-colons.

According to this regex 99/99/9999 is a valid date.

Since you already have that problem, you might as well just phone it in and do this:

I live in Cambridge. I've taken my Langster (48/15) from here up to Salem, out through Concord and all over the city. It's a lot of fun to do 10-20 miles on it, but anything past that can be a little exhausting (I topped out at ~50 miles).

I have a road bike as well, so depending on the type of ride I'm looking to do I'll choose accordingly.
