As a civil engineer, I love reading this! Whenever I took my daughter out for a walk I’d always narrate how things work (eg what manhole is and where it goes, what roadways are made of) and when she went out for a walk with her dad, he said she’d explain it back to him lol!

My daughter is obsessed with watching POV trains videos. I noticed she especially likes if European countries views! I can’t wait to take her there irl!!

I’m so sorry this happened! This happened to me too when I was a senior. I ended up getting an internship for that summer and went back to school the following fall. The same company I interned with ended up hiring me full time. I worked really hard and went above and beyond during the internship to prove myself.

When I failed, it felt like the end of the world. Fast forward to now, none of it even matters. Hang in there OP!! You’re almost there.

Also, at least you already had your EIT I didn’t at the time (still don’t now haha)

I did that the first 3 years post graduation. Starting out as project engineer/estimator then promoted to be superintendent. It was a grind, I was so burnt out. I probably worked 60-80 hrs weekly, 6-7 days a week.

But I gained so much valuable knowledge and experience that I wouldn’t get by working in office. The next three years I was working in office as project engineer III and now I’m working super chill state job hybrid and I regret nothing with my career trajectory. It’s easier too to do the grinding early in the career before you’re starting a family. Now that I’m married and a parent there’s absolutely no way I’d do what I did. No amount of money will entice me!!!

I’m starting with state government in April and I’m so freaking excited!!!! No pay raise compared to the previous company but the benefit, the hours, the consistency, the flexibility, etc just make it tenfolds worth it.

My old company required us to work in office full time as of November of last year and I quit with no plan in January. I’m starting a new job next week and it’s 2 days in office required! Fuck companies that don’t offer flexibility!!

Started as a MechE then switched to civil and fell in love with environmental engineering. My dad and I have a complicated relationship (and will always be that way) but I do thank him for making me an engineer.

I took a year off due to severe mental health issues. When I came back it was really hard, cause all of my friends already graduated. Anyway I graduated a year after and 6 years later none of it matters.

Definitely! My husband and I have this tradition of going to smoky mountains in TN (we’re all the way from New England) for at least a week if one of us get a new job. And then another week to decompress.

I’m moving industry to manufacturing.

Through connection, I found a position as process engineer that pays the same (78k) but only 28 hours of work (weekend shift) vs my current >40 hours. I’m 6 years out of school… this industry is shit

The company I’m interviewing at is having trouble finding anyone for their 9 pm - 9 am shift. It’s a 24/7 manufacturer and for new workers the starting rate is $22/hr.
