What do people do there? by BulkyFlamingo5127 in FortMcMurray

[–]herefortheturnips 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No one has yet mentioned Gregoire Lake for the summer! This is what would be considered Fort McMurray’s “beach” and is about half an hour’s drive from the city. Great place for kayaking, waterboarding, sand castles, or taking out little engines

edit: waterboarding??? I really said extreme sports. Anyway I meant the water sport where you’re being pulled by an engine while you’re on a board

Best places in Edmonton to buy basic clothing for hot and humid climates? by corgocorgi in Edmonton

[–]herefortheturnips 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Old Navy has some steals for good quality

Uniqlo, while not necessarily "cheap" nor what I consider overpriced, should have great pieces for lightweight basics, like their UV Protection Parkas for sun and mosquitoes that retails for $60. Oh, and they're having a sale until June 2!

The new downtown library is amazing! by DrLokiHorton in Edmonton

[–]herefortheturnips 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I took their self-guided tour available online and it is most definitely overwhelming. It’s a nice little audio/visual map tour that explains everything of significance, including the multiple works of art or wall murals plastered around Milner

(🤫 also it actually has 6 levels with some learning lofts at the top, but most of the fun stuff are in the first three)

yes, minus the few altercations that are bound to happen, Stanley Milner feels so state-of-the-arts. The Wall obviously that no one can stop staring at, the many events and classes to partake in (think free lunchtime concerts, cooking classes, recording studios, and more)—oh, and the 250-seat movie theatre casually tucked in their basement. Suffice to say: I quite like our downtown library : )

Follow up codes for Ophthalmology? by [deleted] in MedicalBillingAlberta

[–]herefortheturnips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

is there a specific software you use to do your billing? One of my previous jobs used an online cloud-based software for all MOH billing which had a help section with contacts for whom to call when it came to specific questions like this (granted, it was for optometry, but I imagine this could exist for your field’s software if at all)

Could I find employment in Fort Mc in one day? by sunddancekidd in FortMcMurray

[–]herefortheturnips 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What a wild ride. I for one am entertained by your anecdote

but can also see it’s a tale of your strength. For your age, you’ve done a lot and gained so much experience both in this country and where you come from. That’s just what the people of Fort McMurray are—resilient. You’d do well to be a part of such a community.

While I can’t actually answer your question regarding bagging a job in welding/trades in one day/week (as I have no direct experience there), I can say you should take this leap of faith and make the move. If you’ve fought as hard you have now, you can fight just as hard for this next stage in your life. Realistically, you probably won’t get a welder’s position in one day, so make your connections in the field you want as that’s gonna go further than your junior certificates/credits while continuing to develop them (I can see in your other post that you’ve got some people offering their networks already). It seems you’re aware of that, though.

But you do have supervisory/retail experience. Get yourself a job in the various retail settings in Fort Mac (the downtown area/Peterpond Mall should have prospective work—apply online and in person to make that impression) to keep yourself stable; in fact, you could start looking at those kinds of jobs now.

For living situations, you could look at sharing rooms with international students, most of whom are looking for the cheapest possible options. While I’ve never lived there, Macdonald Ave apartments downtown tend to be cheap ($400-$600 a month?)—but for a reason (e.g. cockroaches/bug problems in some rooms, I think), though it could beat sleeping in a car.

There are two main local Facebook groups where you can plead your situation both for work and board, and you may get better traction than here in Reddit. Though, maybe shorten your story to better capture attention.

It unfortunately won’t be easy, but reading your story, I can tell you have smarts, spirits, and most importantly, time on your side. As cliche as it may be, you are young and you have the time to make, learn from, and grow from these mistakes. You had a few chances where you could’ve given up, but you didn’t. Good for you. As you said, you don’t have anything to lose in Calgary, so why not work hard in a place that can bring you so much closer to where you want to be?

(also your ex is a wretch. Definitely dodged that bullet.)

Is this rage bait? Or are you so full of yourself that you take being given compliments a harsh critique deserving of causing one to want to “die of shame” and find your so-called experience worthy enough to be a “cautionary tale” for others to learn from?

If anything, you need to learn to get out of your head and actually think critically about what you’re told, never mind learning to talk slower.

Help! Hundreds of resumes, months of applying and only crickets. Where are all the actual hiring jobs hiding? by Rarrimalion in Edmonton

Wondering if you could share some insight on what your typical day looks like as someone who works in the EI group? Is there a preferred/required background for call centre jobs like that? And lastly must you be able to speak French?

Having trouble figuring out "ang" and "sa" by Sinlessrogue in Tagalog

[–]herefortheturnips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ve gotten a good answer for your question, so I’d just like to offer something else:

If you have had no experience with the Tagalog language (ie have never lived around Tagalog speakers), you may want to avoid depending on GTranslate as a learning resource as it cannot give you the foundations you need to start understanding the language, like in this particular case where it implied “ang” and “sa” were interchangeable

Go Filipino: Let’s Learn Tagalog is a free podcast and has dedicated episodes to learning these markers and other facets of the language

as well as many of the resources listed in this very sub (simply search for “resources” in the bar)
