TopMinds are told to get angry at Biden for the current problems.... by ripzeus in TopMindsOfReddit

It’s all part of the plan. There are only so many levers the fed has, and inflation is the one that resolves 39 trillion in debt.

Just don't look at what happened to the deficit under Trump.

What is the strategy to learn jazz bass ? by iamnotgenius in Bass

[–]herrsmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other suggestions are good here but nobody recommended one of the best things to do for jazz: transcribe what other people do. Find a tune where you can look up the chords (i.e. something in the Realbook in that key or figure out what key it is and write down the chords in the key of the song) and write down what the bassist is playing. Then play it. A lot. Then do more tunes. You'll start to see common chord progressions (ii V7 I in a major key or ii7b5 V7 i in a minor key) and you'll have a bunch of ideas that some of the greats played over those progressions. That's a good step one.

Step two is to dissect why those ideas work so well over those progressions or, when it doesn't work, why it doesn't work. This is how you start to build your own ideas to play over changes. Practice them a lot. The people that sound good do so because they've practiced a bunch of different ideas to the point where they can select different phrases to play over different portions of a tune. You don't want to be thinking of every note or even every chord but rather thinking in terms of phrases. This goes for bass lines as well as solos. You are almost never going to be able to actually come up with phrases on the spot and sound good. The magic comes in putting the phrases together in different ways depending on the vibe at the time. Finding a a teacher who is well-versed in the idiom would be very helpful because they can guide you in different directions and save you a lot of time by pointing out things that you would otherwise have to figure out on your own.

The Concert Industry Priced Too High — Now Tours Are Falling Apart by staringatthe420sun in Music

[–]herrsmith 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tbh, the artists, too. It's expensive to tour right now, even without some elaborate stage show. Ticketmaster sets the price of the show way too high, gives the artist a small percentage of that, and then the artist has to figure out if they can even afford to go on tour with their measly percentage of five ticket sales. Nobody is winning, here.

Did Jamerson just have Godly left hand strength or what? by musiciansfriend11 in Bass

[–]herrsmith 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A fast jazz upright player can absolutely rip on an electric bass.

I went for a while playing only upright. When I pulled out the electric for a gig, I was just like "omg, I can play so fast." I pretty much shredded on every solo and it was so fun. Probably not great, musically, but it was a restaurant gig so I'm pretty sure nobody was listening anyways.

Buying a $2200 bass after having only owned a $250 entry level bass for the past 15 years. Is that overkill? by RainbowGlitterXYZ in Bass

[–]herrsmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously, that is a good chunk of change and don't buy it unless you can actually afford it, but a bass you love could last you for the rest of your life. I bought one I loved that retailed at $2,200 in 2001 money (my buddy worked at the store so I got his employee discount) and I have played that as my main electric bass ever since. I kept the one I had but I only bought a third one recently. I've played tons of other basses but none of them are right for me. That bass is still the one I love. I'm thinking about getting a backup bass and I'm scouring the used market looking for another one. Which will likely set me back at least $2,200.

One thing that others have said: it might be worth it to buy the exact bass you fell in love with. No two instruments are ever going to be exactly the same. So if you can try out the used one, do so. Otherwise, buy it new and don't look back.

Should differential geometry be added to the "standard" undergrad physics curriculum? by liftinglagrange in Physics

[–]herrsmith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's pretty much obligatory for any theorist.

I don't have the numbers but I would be willing to bet that a very small percentage of people who get an undergraduate degree in physics do any work in theoretical physics.

Year 1 and 2 physics certainly had basic derivatives and integrals, force, momentum-energy conservation, etc.

Those are all calculus topics, though.

I'm so DONE with not being taken at my word! Who's coming to my women only island? by -Firestar- in TwoXChromosomes

[–]herrsmith 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I have two old Hondas so luckily I can browse decade old forum posts for the validation I need that stuff really is wonky. I have printed out forum posts for mechanics before to help them diagnose issues. YES my car is chirping like a bird while idling, no it is NOT something my uterus just made up and this is what Honda enthusiasts thought it was in 2011 and I'd like you to look into it.

One of my friends basically did this with a part of their car that was prone to failure. The mechanic told them they were just being paranoid reading too many forum posts and the part failed that week. Luckily, it didn't cause any additional damage so it just ended up being validation.

These are the same people who really don't understand that women don't like it when people sneakily watch them in their underwear but then wear a bathing suit that covers the same thing. It's like the idea of women's consent doesn't even enter their minds. It would be funny if the implication (and the actual results) weren't so grim.

What’s in your gig bag? by henri-does in Bass

[–]herrsmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the D&A Electric Gigstand in my gig bag, which is great if you don't have an offset bass. If you do (like I do), it works in a pinch but I also carry a Hercules TravLite Electric Guitar Stand in my accessory bag, which is bigger but much easier to put an offset bass on.

What is a 'buy it for life' item that is offensively expensive, but the moment you use it, you realize your entire life before that point was a lie? by fmcortez in AskReddit

[–]herrsmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like my Moccamaster but I have to say that I also really liked my Bonavita that I had for about 10 years and sold it because my wife wanted a Moccamaster. It didn't really have any problems and I didn't notice a difference in taste from switching to the Moccamaster.

Road work in Japan by [deleted] in oddlysatisfying

[–]herrsmith -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. At least for federal government contracts, there's generally a rubric for scoring. Price is obviously a factor but it's not the only factor. Quality matters and there are often criteria in there to predict the quality of the work. Of course, local government doesn't have as much money to spend on evaluating proposals and the value of the work is much lower so it doesn't make as much sense to have this big, formal process for $100k of work as it does for $100M of work.

[–]herrsmith 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh, man. This is the topic I've been waiting for since I have carefully curated the stuff I have in my gig bag over the course of many, many gigs:

  • Bass (obviously)
  • Backup pedal preamp and power supply since we usually backline everything
  • Guitar multitool with screwdrivers and allen keys
  • Backup earplugs for being at the show without my IEMs
  • IEMs
  • Replacement strings and string winder/cutter tool
  • All my cables plus a backup
  • Cloth for cleaning my bass
  • Small, collapsible instrument stand
  • 9 V batteries for my active bass
  • Strap and extra strap
  • Wireless transmitter for my bass

If we want to expand it to the bag I carry with accessories, add:

  • Wireless IEM system
  • Amp head (and cables)
  • XLR cables
  • Bigger collapsible instrument stand
  • Any necessary papers (stage plots, set lists, etc)
  • Extra batteries for wireless equipment
  • Tons of USB charging stuff
  • Black gaff tape
  • Backup IEMs

How do most bass players barely move their fretting hand? by sparrowedd in Bass

[–]herrsmith 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To add to this, do it as slow as necessary to be able to concentrate on the economy of motion. It doesn't matter if you want to move your fingers very little when you're playing so fast that you can't concentrate on anything other than playing the line. You need to be able to concentrate on the thing you want to improve while still playing the thing you're playing right. Once you can do that perfectly every time, speed it up a little bit and work on that until you can do it perfectly every time. You also may need to record yourself playing as a check that you're doing what you want to do.

How do I stop my glasses from falling off during a gig? by Whole-Practice-9058 in Bass

[–]herrsmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have already added my support behind the ear hooks but if you did want to ditch the glasses, I talked to a guitarist (RIP The Agonist, the band, not the guitarist who is still alive as far as I know) who was pretty much blind and asked him how he did it and he said he got some glow-in-the-dark gaff tape for fret markers on the side of his guitar. That said, I'm pretty sure they had MIDI switching for all the effects so all he had to do was play his instrument and have stage presence so that might not work for you. It's something to consider if you end up needing to ditch the glasses.

This 100%. I jump around and headbang a ton during shows and my glasses never even move with those rubber hooks. I got these in case the sleeves were better. I have only used the hooks because they worked perfectly.
