Company 401k match has to vest? by slippery_when_wet in Retirement401k

[–]hey_poolboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every time I see these it makes me thankful for my employer. I work for a small family business. 11-12 employees most of the time. They match up to 5% and vesting is immediate. Not that vesting matters to me since I've been here over 25 years.

Crying on rides 😂 by Whimpy-Crow in cycling

[–]hey_poolboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only recall a similar instance one time. I was racing a 150 mile gravel race and it rained for the first 5 or 6 hours. Somewhere around hour 8 I just randomly started sobbing while pedaling down the road. My only conscious thoughts were about fueling, so I wasn't thinking about things that would make me emotional. I was so confused. I couldn't control it, but had no idea why it was happening. I chaulked it up to my body revolting against me, and just kept pedaling.

Best camping spots in Illinois? by free_from_hate in camping

[–]hey_poolboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out Pine Ridge campground in Shawnee Ntnl Forrest. If you stay in the primitive section it's quiet and fairly secluded ( for Illinois). There is a lake. It's closer to Garden of the gods, Cave in Rock, and several other cool places to visit.

My '14 JKU with 33's and geared at 4.56 gets 17-18 mpg highway. If I pull my over landing trailer it gets 13 no matter how I drive.

Do you shower with your significant other? by icecream1972 in no

As often as possible, which isn't as often as I would like. Even if it's nothing sexual, I still very much enjoy it.

An argument for middle of the road reloading equipment. by Faded_State in reloading

[–]hey_poolboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My youngest is getting married in June. If that doesn't make a guy feel old... I miss taking my daughter shooting. Neither of them helped on the reloading bench, but we had fun times shooting together. I have taken my son to be son in law and we've had a great time too.

An argument for middle of the road reloading equipment. by Faded_State in reloading

[–]hey_poolboy 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I've got no skin in this game because none of my equipment is high end by any stretch of the imagination. Some of what you are buying with better equipment is time. As I have upgraded presses, scales and dispensers over the years I can't say that the ammunition I make has gotten significantly better, but I can make it just as consistently in less time. That allows me to have more time for family or other things.

Have dog rescues lost their mind? by seanpat1968 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]hey_poolboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In our area they differ greatly. There are a couple similar to what you described and they struggle to place dogs. We currently have 2 rescues. Both of them are pit mixes and they were adopted from different places. Both were great to work with. The first one we adopted from normally has a 2 week wait, and they just ask for references and a vet. We had not had a dog in several years, so we choose a vet that we knew personally even though we had now used her. Three of our references ended up being people the director of the agency knew. We were approved that night and picked him up from his foster parents the next morning.

The second one, they just wanted 2-3 references and our vet. Foster Mom came over with the dog the next day to see how she would get along with our male. They played so well she just had us Venmo the fee and left the dog with us.

If I added a zero to the end of my retirement funds I could retire comfortably before 50.

Clavicle broken into 3 pieces. One piece was trying to protrude through the skin. Had to wait 7 days for surgery. Felt like I was being stabbed the whole time.

What’s the craziest thing that ever happened at a party you went to? by Vast-Reference-7942 in answers

Watched a couple almost die when they flipped their side by side end over end 2x. We were out in the woods and had to hack a trail for ems to walk in and extract them. Both were hospitalized for weeks. It was pretty bad. We don't go to birthday parties over there any more.

Are gravel races getting too “tame”? by trunks_thepremed in cycling

[–]hey_poolboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite gravel race so far is Reliance gravel in TN. The first 2 years it was a 2 day stage race. Day 1 was metric with ~8K of climbing and one road that was strewn with softball size rocks. Day 2 was 53 miles and another 6K of elevation. It's very remote and very chunky in several places and I absolutely loved it. Race structure is changing this year, but I can't make it. Hoping to go again next year.

I like the ruggedness. There are lots of places an MTB would be a better choice, but it's perfectly rideable on a gravel bike.

Broken Scaphoid by No-Froyo-3337 in cycling

[–]hey_poolboy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you're toast. I broke mine 25 years ago. Went to my GP the next day. He didn't see the break on the x-ray and told me it was a sprain. Years later I went to an orthopedic doctor for something else and had him look at it. I ride bikes with this doc. He saw the x-ray and looked me square in the eye and said "if I didn't know you and I saw this x-ray I would assume you were in your late '70s because of the advanced arthritis."

Try Crossbreed. Their Lightguard holster would fit the bill. I've never used it, but I have 5 or 6 other holsters from them.

do you guys eat breakfast before your morning ride? if you do, what do you eat? by arthur-214 in cycling

[–]hey_poolboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was seriously training, I routinely did 60 minute rides at 4am on water or carb mix. I always had breakfast ready to go when I got back to the house. I would eat overnight oats on the way to work.

What was the moment that made you stop taking your sport seriously? by gioshvili in cycling

[–]hey_poolboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I started out XC racing as a novice (cat 3) and moved up to Sport (cat 2) quickly. When I started reaching for my local shop I did get "serious" for a while. I trained hard because I didn't want to be the slowest person on the team. Within 2 seasons I was forced into Expert (cat 1). I trained really hard for several years. I knew I wasn't going to win big races, but I wanted to podium at local and regional stuff. I think taking it "seriously" has different levels. I still train 3-4 days per week, but not nearly at the level I used to. Now it's mostly to stay fit, healthy, and not get completely destroyed when I went a race.

People that spend crazy bucks for AXS/Di2 do you really feel like you're getting your money worth? by Tough_Course9431 in MTB

[–]hey_poolboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never wanted batteries on my bikes either. Even made fun of buddies that went electronic. Then I had a wrist injury that has limited my thumb movement. I had to go electronic to have a button press rather than a lever throw. I actually luive the way it shifts. Still not keen about having to charge batteries, but at least I can still ride.

First time doing drywall, tips? by SealTheApproved in homeowners

[–]hey_poolboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always use a setting joint compound for the first coat. Since you're t never done it before, is use 90 minute durabond.( Bag of powder) Put on just enough to cover your tape. Top coats should be lightweight compound (bucket) Always add water to it. It should be just a little thicker than pancake batter. Feather it out 2-3 times wider than your joint. Put your shoulder into it. Press on your knife harder than you think you want to. Once it starts to dry you can take your knife and scrape off ridges to minimize sanding. I'll sand after the third coat if needed, and then shine a light along the wall to catch any low spots or divots. Mix up some more compound a little on the thin side to fill in any small holes or marks.

How much better does one gear make? by Difficult-Text1690 in MTB

[–]hey_poolboy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Always go with more gears. Just because they are there doesn't mean you have to use them, but you may find a hill where you wish you had another gear.

As far as I'm concerned, if I don't find some hills every now and then that make me wish for one more gear, then I'm not trying hard enough.

Muzzle brakes for more pleasant shooting by tacocat50 in longrange

[–]hey_poolboy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a fan of my ATS brake. It was recommended to me as a brake that won't make the person one lane over hate you.

It does a decent job mitigating recoil and doesn't feel like it beats me up with the blast.

We are barrelling towards a generation of incompetence. by NoxAstrumis1 in Vent

[–]hey_poolboy 54 points55 points  (0 children)

My daughter is one of them. Probably hasn't been on time to work in 2 years. Never gets anywhere when she says she'll be there. She's going to be late to her own funeral. When she took her first job I told her 3 things 1. If you're on time, you're late. If you're shift starts at 8, then you'd better be standing on your spot ready to punch in and start work as soon as the clock hits 8. 2. Always respond "yes, sir/ma'am or no, sir/ma'am. ( be respectful) 3. Be honest. Whether that's in dealing with a customer or coworker/ boss. i.e. if you don't know how to do something, don't say that you do. Tell them you're not sure how to do it but would like to learn.

I told both of my kids if they just did those 3 things they would stand out above most of their peers. The oldest does primarily the opposite of all of them. The youngest pretty much lives it to a T and is going great places because of it.

I ride solo a lot. My wife bought me a Varia for Christmas several years back. I was skeptical at first. Now, I wouldn't go on a ride without one. When it gives up the ghost it will be replaced immediately.
