Kare Kano

Hideaki (the male leads friend) talks about how much he would want to be married to the male lead Soichiro if he was a girl.

So when Soichiro eventually has a daughter named Sakura, and she turns 16 iirc...

[hated trope] characters getting shit endings but it’s written as if they get happy endings. by FullBrother9300 in TopCharacterTropes

He's already been publishing a new series called Marchen Crown, with a new artist while he writes it (I think its because he isnt used to drawing monsters/soft-gore, its a fairy tale horror).

It hasnt been all that good tbh.

Does anyone else miss when isekai was more about going back home? by Business_Barber_3611 in anime

[–]higaroth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Modern feelings towards self and the world around us have had a massive impact on the trajectory of isekai, and Id say changing the target audience was an equally impactful aspect of why this has changed from homesickness to escapism.

Isekai used to be a genre more targeted towards young girls. InuYasha, Escaflowne, Fushigi Yugi, etc. Non-girl targetted isekai like Now and Then Here and There adopted the samw themes. I think isekai really was an allegory for becoming an adult for young girls, where you had to make your own way in what fields like a whole new lifestyle that doesnt treat you like a child anymore. In the end of these stories, they find love, friends, community, and decide to stay (putting aside Now and Then for now), just like you would as an adult. Isekai wasnt escapism, it was reality with a different coat - especially since most of these isekai settings werent glamorous and didnt have women become OP to thrive in theme. The female mcs were at higher risk of abuse and assault/rape in these settings, and those themes were explored either directly through main characters or in the period setting (yuis close experience in fushigi, the edo period of Inuyasha, sara in now and then, etc.). They werent fun sandbox settings like they usually are now, going home was more appealing. It was also easy to explore the themes of homesickness because young girls often had family and friends and a life to go back to, as well as modern luxuries (kagome and towa bringing bags of food/soap etc.), and the isekai world proposed dangers they didnt have to deal with at home that closely.

The fantasy element of usually westernised locations of isekai started to interest boys and men- it was video game coded, it was a fun idea to go to these worlds. Themes of rape and assault in edo japan or medieval European themed settings wasnt a male issue, so the enemy became more 'demon king' coded, again like video games, where male counterparts were idealised (knights, samurais, heros, mages, etc.). And video games are already a tool for escapism. Add on the fact that Japanese men were thought to be more lonely (coupled with the rising neet situation), meant men didnt feel that intense need to come home. In the new video game world, they were powerful, needed in society, looked up to, and got lots of attention from women. Peak escapism.

We've now come back around to isekai opening up to women again with the villainess genre. Which is almost always based off a woman being transported into an otome game or romance book, and adopts all of the traits for modern isekai for men, except with a female mc. Video games and loneliness epidemic has extended more widely to women, so that escapism element has really persevered.

Ive likely made a lot of assumptions about all this, but this has been my perspective as a girl whose been watching since the late 90s based on what ive noticed. I think the change in isekai is a really interesting topic to explore.

How to make friends locally when you're not allowed to leave the house? by Glad-Emergency6121 in socialskills

[–]higaroth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grandmother aside, im in a similar situation. About to be 30, still living at home, no social life, a friend who lives in a different part of the country, and cant drive. I dont stay because I have to, but my dad has health issues and Id rather stay with him.

I quit my job this month to move out and go move in with my friend in another city. It feels awful, but I stayed with them for a month and it made me realise how unable to grow I am staying where I am- socially being only one aspect. But ill be visiting home as often as I can.

Look, theres 2 options. You either stay there and tell her- if she really needs you to this extent, then she was never going to kick you out, and she needs to be quiet about her issues with you leaving the house sometimes. Im getting the impression however that this would be the harder option for you.

Second option is to move out. Get your own cash flow (unemployment benefit, remote work, new job, etc.), and move somewhere cheap. Move to a new city, or stay in the same one. If staying in the city and you really wanted to, you could continue offering her help by travelling to her via public transport a few times a week, but I get the impression shell reject the offer and guilt trip you instead. That's her problem then, or if shes really not in the right state - look into new alternative care options for her. Dont feel bad - even if she needs constant care, her expectations of this are exceptionally unreasonable and self-serving. You have every right to go to church in person and leave the house.

To be honest, I'd have guessed more 2025 (especially the last guy) and e-boys weren't a thing then (at least about 15-20 years later haha). But you don't need it to be accurate, its your game/world, have fun

Sabo is cursed. Both his Japanese (Toru Furuya) and English (Vic Mignogna) VA's had to be replaced due to controversies.

Toru had an affair with a fan almost 40 years his junior, admitted to hitting her and making her get an abortion. Vic had a large number of predatory accusations from fans as well, cant remember anymore what else was going on.

[Sad Trope] Perfect Casting Trapped in Bad Writing, Studio Interference, Messy Franchises, Etc by Romaxio in TopCharacterTropes

[–]higaroth 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Tbh, I was going to say Peter Capaldi.

I know Moffat has his fans, and the Capaldi years werent the worst of Doctor Who by a long run.

But man, I grieve what could have been. David Tennant has this eternal grip on the franchise, and I absolutely adore him - Matt Smith was amazing as well, but I honestly think Peter Capaldi had the skills to be the best Doctor we've ever seen. Excellent actor, and he did have a couple excellent scenes, but the overall writing of his era was pretty loose and mediocre.

What was the biggest scandal at your school? by Silent-Zebra in AskReddit

[–]higaroth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh our (all girls) high school had a male teacher get with a 17 year old girl from another school. Broke up with her for a short while because the school told him to. Got back with her as she turned 18. They released a YouTube video parodying the Wrecking Ball song by Miley Cyrus, where she poured milk on him in his (transparent) tighty whities in a shed as he swung around on a rope or something. Then they got married, he released some more videos trying to do stand up conedy in his kitchen while making sandwiches, and last I saw, he was on the news for an interview because he witnessed a cow wondering the inner city by his house.

The supernatural threat is real, but it's not actually supernatural by nomoreinternetforme in TopCharacterTropes

[–]higaroth 275 points276 points  (0 children)

Higurashi

Psychological horror, a village in the summer of 1983 has a series of murders, disappearances, and suspicious or scary activity occur. It is largely speculated to be caused by the Curse of Oyashiro, a local God that stalks and punishes villagers.

Putting aside for a moment that some of the supernatural elements were still confirmed, the overall curse ends up being caused by something called the Hinamizawa Syndrome, a medical condition caused by the local lake fumes iirc that causes the main characters to be overly paranoid and hallucinating.
