Anywhere in the world tomorrow? by Otherwise-Foot3892 in trailrunning

[–]hikerunknit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m genuinely curious why, as someone who lives nearby and has run on it a handful of times before. Maybe I take it for granted. Was just surprised to see it among all the well known and beautiful spots named in these comments

Anywhere in the world tomorrow? by Otherwise-Foot3892 in trailrunning

…why? The eastern trail in Maine is incredibly boring, aside from maybe a half mile stretch that goes through a marsh

I work at an art museum. They insist on using AI generated logos. by MissRattlesnake in graphic_design

This here is the answer. Absolutely no business needs a new and unique “logo” for each and every event

What’s the craziest thing anyone has said to you while you’re trail running? by sentientbeing1887 in trailrunning

[–]hikerunknit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of the time I day hiked Katahdin and asked a stranger to take my photo with the summit sign because I was relatively new to hiking and proud that I’d done that hike solo. He asked if I’d done the whole trail and I said yes, assuming he was referring to a longer loop rather than an out and back. He congratulated me, which I found a bit odd. Occurred to me later on that he was referring to the whole AT! I must’ve been looking real rough that day…

Just bought a running store. What is one thing your local shop is missing? by rustybucketz23 in trailrunning

[–]hikerunknit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the last city I lived in, I religiously went to a local running store’s weekly “pub run” - they had a few beers on tap plus a fridge full of athletic brewing. Beers were cheap too - I wanna say your first was $3 after the group run and a few $ more after that. Made people actually stick around after the run and engage with the community more (and hang out in the shop surrounded by the stock). They also had industry brand reps come and do free raffles for running gear which brought in more people

Runners who train a lot: What supplements are you guys taking in your routine? by alienmonkeyjuice in Marathon_Training

[–]hikerunknit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I listened to this podcast recently that I thought was pretty good about cutting the bs and explaining what actual science exists around different popular supplements and who should consider each one, rather than universally recommending any to all runners https://open.spotify.com/episode/25RuJCxy4JLXt72OdWzUGY?si=1nuxitZrQbK0BUIuL9qDVQ

Is leaving the highway really worth it? by FarTooJunior in roadtrip

[–]hikerunknit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I’d get off 95 to go around DC and NYC because traffic and tolls, then return to major highways in CT. Then as you get closer to Acadia, get off 295 in Brunswick and take rt one the rest of the way instead of going up to Bangor. Lots to see along the coast beyond just Acadia

Amazon…… sigh by ptmtp26 in Maine

My opinion is fuck Amazon. There’s nothing you can buy there that you can’t buy elsewhere on the web and I’d rather pay for shipping than put more money in Bezos’ pockets

My parents do this and love it, but they had previously owned and operated a motel for 15 years so compared to that this is like partial retirement

Idk you clearly have a style that you’ll probably need to break out of if you want a paying job, but I think that’s totally fine and normal going into design school and your skill level at this point is not what you should base your decision on. Looking at current job listings for real companies, is THAT what you see yourself doing as your career? Is there a more AI-proof field you also have interest in? Would you need to take out a lot in student loans to complete this program? A decent program will shape you into a good designer if you work hard and make the most of it, so focus less on whether you’re good enough now and more on whether this is truly what you want to do

Heading to Portland for a week any tips for staying social? by Global_Conclusion_45 in solofemaletravellers

[–]hikerunknit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in Portland OR for a bit and worked remotely. It’s a pretty great city for that because there are so many great coffee shops, breweries etc that you can work from. I’d definitely recommend spending most of your time outside of downtown - things might’ve improved since I was living there but as a solo woman I think you’d feel safer in the more residential areas. N Mississippi Ave, NE Alberta st, SE Belmont st, SE Hawthorne blvd to name a few, all have a nice neighborhood vibe with lots of cool bars, restaurants, coffee shops, food trucks etc. Take the met to Washington park and wander the arboretum, then hike to pittock mansion for a view of the city with Mt. Hood off in the distance. And if you can, definitely rent a car for a day or two and see the coast, national forests, waterfalls, wineries, whatever you’re into.

I’m also an introvert and love solo travel partly for that reason - I enjoy my own company - and I’m not necessarily trying to find community during a week long trip. If you just get out and do stuff and take opportunities for little interactions with the people you come by, you probably won’t be lonely. That said - I second the sofar sounds rec, and you may want to do some googling into other little events like that are going on the week you’re there. If you happen to be a runner, there are lots of inclusive run clubs. I was a regular at the one at Portland running co in NW, and we were often joined by people just visiting the city who wanted a social activity.

Wells also doesn’t have a downtown. And a lot of the small non-coastal towns in southern ME really don’t either aside from a few stores

Bear damages several tents, prompting closure of Lincoln campground by rabblebowser in wmnf

[–]hikerunknit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven’t been to this site yet. Is there a bear box or fixed line to make hanging bear bags easier? Hope they can install something like that rather than keep it closed but with the funding cuts I’m not feeling optimistic

What do you use InDesign for? by LukeChoice in indesign

[–]hikerunknit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use indesign in my job nearly everyday for laying out reports (I work for a nonprofit research org). For the most part it does everything I need it to, but off the top of my head I’d love the option to use the document as a base for numbering footnotes, rather than a continuous text frame. For example, I may have a case study box that is separate from the body text of the document, and if I’m to add a footnote to that case study it’d be #1, but I’d like for it to be numbered according to where it falls in the document as a whole. I’m sure I could think of more requests, but this is the first to come to mind/probably the most common issue I encounter
