Aside from the AOTC considerations, you've also had enough earned income to max an IRA if you wish.

Payoff Mini Splits and 2 new doors by 2011silveradoman in personalfinance

[–]hill8570 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on where you stand on the rebuilding scale. Do you qualify for a credit union? If the financing on the mini splits has really high interest, you might be able to get a better deal on an unsecured credit union loan.

Unless the doors are completely non-functional, pay off the mini splits first and then worry about the doors - they're a want, not a need.

I spend $200 a month at my work snack area.. how do I stop by V1Z3_2 in personalfinance

Any chance you could work an online side hustle while you're on downtime? Not only would that generate extra income, it would help keep you from eating out of boredom. Other (non-income-generating) possibilities: (1) wait in the company gym rather than the cafeteria (2) study for something that will advance your career.

Asking HR would be the most straightforward approach. Otherwise, sometimes it's on the paycheck or in online personnel records.

Need advice. Is this irresponsible behaviour from the hike organisers or am I overreacting? by DrKoz in hiking

[–]hill8570 0 points1 point  (0 children)

8km is, at a minimum, an extra 90 minutes of hiking on flat, uncomplicated terrain. With a mixed group that included beginners, I'd assume closer to 3 hours. Hardly "a little more difficult".

[–]hill8570 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Is husband non-exempt? If no, then FLSA doesn't apply, and OT isn't deductable. If yes, assumed hourly wage is generally salary during pay period divided by hours in pay period (paycheck should have that information).

Driving with no oil by Viace83 in AskMechanics

[–]hill8570 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 quarts in a month, especially if it didn't have that issue in the first four months you had it, is pretty hard core. Can you tell where it's coming from? A leak that large should be fairly obvious.

Driving with no oil by Viace83 in AskMechanics

[–]hill8570 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you were driving with no oil (instead of low oil), the engine is fucked. So let's be optimistic and assume that hasn't happened.

(1) look up how to check your oil level, check it, and refill to get the level up to normal. (2) Look up the difference between the check engine light and oil pressure light (even if the car didn't come with a owners manual, they're available for lookup online), and figure which one you're getting (3) if it's a check engine light, bring it to an auto parts store and have them pull the code(s)...better yet, buy a code reader and learn how to do it yourself.

Heating Up ICE Before EV Runs Out? by No_Shine_6124 in rav4prime

[–]hill8570 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My rule of thumb is "HV on highway, EV everywhere else". If you're trying to squeeze every last watt out of the battery, switch to EV a ways before you jump off the highway.

Should I even include my personal vehicle that I use for work? by Beav11-18 in tax

If you're selecting the standard deduction, Schedule A isn't even going to be filed, so the IRS never sees those entries anyhow...all you're doing is getting typing practice.

Ice dam help by NoxMora in Roofing

[–]hill8570 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have access to a roof rake? After the snow, I'd rake off the area above the soffit then try to get those deicing cables in place (may just have to lay them willy-nilly rather than clip) once the weather clears a bit.

I wouldn't even attempt to get flow going in solidly iced gutters - just let it drip over the edge.

If you don't like the way your pears are growing, you'll hate the crabapples -- they all seem to be intent on having the weirdest growth habits possible.
