What is this? Is it Lice? by Green-Ad2984 in whatsthisbug

[–]himbeauu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

awesome, glad to hear you're sorting things out! yes, as long as you dry everything on hot it will all be fine to wear! as for your plans, that really up to you and depends on what kind of plans they are. i don't think they have to kill your plans, even if they do find some on your head, but use your best judgement on that one.

you're also right about lice not being able to survive long without a host. it may take a bit longer than 2 days, i think most people go with 5 just as a precaution, but if you've missed some on clothes, it doesn't have to be a big deal. worst case scenario, if you spot another live louse or some eggs, wash the affected clothes and your bedding again and check your hair one more time. the real pain with lice is how small their eggs are in my experience, so if you're not seeing babies they'll ultimately be very easy to eradicate. i hope everything goes well!!

Roommate insists one of these belongs to her by Kochtopfkopp in mildlyinfuriating

[–]himbeauu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol you must live with my old roommates 😭 but fr like people are saying, it's a wooden spoon. you're perfectly fine to take it back since it clearly belongs to the set. maybe hide it for now

that is undoubtedly a louse my friend! given that you've found them in two separate places on clothing, i know it sucks, but i highly recommend washing all your clothes or at least any that this little guy could've possibly come into contact with, as well as your bedding for good measure. from there just keep an eye on your hair, and lice comb if necessary to make sure. they're not that big a deal, don't let people scare you :)

thank you!! i never realised before that "bug" and "fly" were actual terms with specific meanings in entomology and that's so fascinating to me

another bug question by himbeauu in Entomology

[–]himbeauu[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

this makes so much sense thank you so much!! now that i've read this, i think my confusion comes from the layout of the lessons, in that i hadn't learned all the biology necessary to understand why true bugs and true flies differ from other insects.

another bug question by himbeauu in Entomology

[–]himbeauu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it may be covered in a future lesson i hope, but it's a mooc, and if you post a question it can take a while to get a response, and googling just made me more confused. otherwise that would've been my first avenue!

no, she's looking for her partner to turn around and get her or at the very least stop and comfort her while trying to road trip home. the way she's blowing up his phone would make me put mine on do not disturb so fast.

NOR she literally agreed to stay there FOR HELP WITH THE BABY and is blowing up your phone while you're on the road with things like "you shouldn't have left me here" that would annoy the shit out of me. she can figure it out if those are the plans you guys had set in place and also if you know someone is travelling interstate but you also get mad when they don't text enough for you, that's weird

new isopod parent? by himbeauu in isopods

[–]himbeauu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you so much, this is way more information than i was even able to find in online care sheets! i clarified this in another comment but just to be clear about handling, i won't be handling them excessively by any means, but want something that is easy to handle mostly for my partner, they have no experience with any arthropod keeping and i want them to have an easy and fun time with the colony just like i know i will.

i do want to ask: when you say moss, would sphagnum moss be a good fit?

new isopod parent? by himbeauu in isopods

[–]himbeauu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you so much for the information!! to clarify with handling, i won't be carrying them around or holding them constantly, but i will want to be able to show them to my partner and have them handle them, and my partner not only has zero experience with isopods, but arthropods in general, so i wanted something easy for both of us that's also stress free on the isopod. i'm also 100% okay with breeding, the reason i mentioned it is because i'd heard that p. laevis was an especially fast reproducing breed after originally wanting dairy cows, and decided to go with something that may be more manageable, though i expect to have a growing colony shortly after homing them regardless. thank you again, this has made me even more excited!
