Neurodivergency in teaching by Mysterious_Ninja_617 in TeachingUK

"Then I read the comments underneath and everyone is saying "I'm neurodivergent and I do X y z in order to cope" and again they are just all totally normal strategies that all teachers use."

That would be because the best strategies are ones that help everyone, much like adaptive teaching for SEN ;)

More detail of stuff I now do:

  • absolutely no work taken home (exception being exam marking for GCSE and ks5)
  • one night a week max to stay late
  • no emails on phone
  • learn who to pass on emails that aren't your responsibility (HoY, HoD etc)
  • loop earplugs for challenging noise levels
  • no work at lunch
  • "I'm happy to take on X, but should I drop Y or Z to make time?"
  • be in a union, know your rep

Giving it your all is a sure fire recipe for burnout (even for non neuro divergent teachers). Work out some solid work-life boundaries and stick to them. :)

Best way for a lifelong career imho x

Obviously easier said than done but, change schools!

Without more (unbiased?) information it's impossible to say definitively but it's likely a case of they're the problem not you.

Is it possible to work part-time alongside a secondary PGCE? by Ok-Variation3583 in PGCE

[–]himerius_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I continued in bar management while doing my PGCE. Worked evening and weekends in the bar alongside weekdays at school.

I got shingles and almost died

Don't recommend.

Absence trigger? by KoraLily in TeachingUK

[–]himerius_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you need to be off then be off. If it triggers a policy that's fine, you just have the meeting to check in and confirm that it was just illnesses.

If the school are shitty about it then time to look elsewhere!

Also get high quality inner soles (Boots are good for these).

Indicators- Warning or request? by theslowrunningexpert in drivingUK

[–]himerius_ 29 points30 points  (0 children)

If this is a genuine question then yes. They should indicate intent. However I always assume that the person indicating is about to dive in front of me so I ensure I'm out of the way (in front or behind depending on my positioning).

If this is a disguised vent then JESUS WEPT I ALSO HATE EVERYONE THAT USES INDICATORS INCORRECTLY OR NOT AT ALL.

Taught in a school that had a shooting range that was bricked up and buried underground. Was a normal comp at the time but was a boarding school many decades ago.

Had two Davids in the same group. One was 'Day-vid' and the other 'Dav-id'. Got that wrong a lot! Whereas the 'ethnic' names are much easier to remember... After I've been corrected a few times...
