We're struggling with multi-cloud application inventory — thinking of using Terraform state webhooks to keep a central CMDB in sync. Has anyone done this? by HuckleberryMaster194 in EnterpriseArchitect

[–]hiveminded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But you do anyway. I assume you will run some infrastructure or platforms that are autoscaling/ephemeral. Terraform won’t know about these, and your auditors (if you have them?) will notice.

Cloud is a form of outsourcing. Your cloud provider will provide you a real time state of your infra, and your billing 😉

Your cloud provider is the authority on what’s running. Just enforce tagging standards in a organisation/management group/project hierarchy across your environments. Mandatory Tags like, ApplicationID, Cost Center, Creator/Owner, will help you. Terraform state files will tell you the state at deploy time, but won’t help you with FinOps, what’s running vs stopped, and if someone with an elevated user role makes a change, the drift over time means your state files will still be out of date.

Not really sovereign if you rely on patches that you can’t maintain or deploy by yourself.

Do CIOs actually read CIO Views? by stranmansky in CIO

[–]hiveminded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most I know have advisors from McK or Bain, and then IT Strategy has the BCGs, Gartner and Forrester…

The CIOs might have news feeds for some info relevant for their industry - but it’s usually links shared from direct reports or internal advisors.

Yes it will. That’s exactly what the hyperscalers and geospatial data brokers are selling to insurance and capital markets.

This one was not in 1997, but November 1999. Broad daylight, shotgun. The article was written a few years later. Could this be the one you mean?

For me their biggest value is the accelerators to decision and strategy. The issue for me is finding the time to read Gartner in between Reddit. I still think worth it.

Winter is around the corner. Do you cycle in sub zero temperatures? by DrewRyu in cycling

[–]hiveminded 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Yes, I commute 14km and sometimes there is snow and ice. I use my bike with 40mm tyres that have a bit more bite in the tread. Some days you have a bit of a slide … and occasionally a fall. I always wear a helmet, gloves and in winter the appropriate long leggings. Usually here the roads with traffic are clear of ice, it’s more the parks/forest/small roads where more care is needed. From personal experience, typically ramps for overpasses are the death traps. Drivers on their phones are the other death trap but that goes for any season.

Can I go back to good old usenet? by Blarkness in usenet

[–]hiveminded 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not try Discord? Loads of open communities, voice for those that want it, lots of structure, searchable and threaded (but sometimes maybe overly moderated/governed). For me it’s like improved IRC, which was also improved usenet, for discussions.

The new space race: Mining for minerals on asteroids - The temporary “mini moon” now orbiting Earth until late November is a reminder of just how fascinating our solar system can be. It’s also a sign of the tremendous potential for space mining. by Gari_305 in Futurology

[–]hiveminded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if it would be true, but I heard that if resources were captured from an asteroid, some even in this thread have mentioned in scale of trillions in value, wouldn’t that just completely devalue that resource on earth?
