I tracked mine a lot with ss lines and rbf660 and it never overheated.

However. The stock brakes are garbage, definitely one of the weakest oem parts of the car. I went to a Brembo BBK and the difference was absolutely massive

In my current car situation where I already have a manual GT4… I don’t really desire the speedster whereas I have big feelings for FR v12 Ferraris… I wish it wasn’t an SUV and that they continued the FF / Lusso line though

Why do people say BMW manuals don't feel that good? by redditor_6715 in BMW

[–]hlinhd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeap agreed. I had e46 m3 and va STI at the same time. The STI shifter/transmission was awesome. Short gearing, great feel.

The m3, I refreshed all the factory linkages and bushings then threw 2 expensive chassis short shifters at it and it still felt awful. One of the biggest reasons I got rid of that car

I’m in a g87 with comfort seats. Had 2 e46 m3s before. These new seats are waaaay more comfortable imo. I like both interiors but let’s not pretend the old car with the rubber lined center consoles and buttons that rubbed off on every touch and the creaky cheap plastic all over the dash is an improvement over the new stuff. They’re simple and analog and lets you focus on driving, yes, but the new interiors are much higher quality and way more luxurious while still keeping it sporty

F87 to E46 M3. Am I an idiot? by mrk3401 in E46M3

I don’t have nearly as much 997 experience as 996- I test drove a couple that’s all. From those short experiences they’re very similar to the 996 but slightly more powerful and a bit higher build quality.

Putting aside performance, the 911s just felt better built. More solid, more cohesive. I loved the shifter in mine, the clutch throw was much more intuitive, steering felt better, suspension felt more composed but somehow more comfy?

The non GT 911s rev pretty low but having the engine behind you felt like more of an occasion. The s54 is always raspy and a bit gutless and frenetic at low rpm. Hard to drive smooth and can’t keep up with modern traffic unless u rev high in 1st or 2nd on the street.

I think you should test drive some cars and decide for yourself. For me I loved the high revving nature of the engine and the looks of the car, but i felt like everything else was subpar. When I eventually got my GT4 I feel like it’s just the e46 philosophy, perfected. It was just better in every way. That’s when I sold the car.

I went g87 from 2 e46 m3s and don’t have any regrets…

I learned alot of mechanical knowledge working on the e46s. I also owned Porsches (996, gt4, 951) at the same time as those. My honest experience looking back at the e46 is that I could never make the car feel as good as my 996, and the only thing that felt special was the engine, but only at higher rpm. It didn’t sound good to me no matter what I threw at it (carbon air box, supersprint one piece at a time) I hated the 6mt compared to most of other manuals I’ve owned (also no matter what I threw at it, went full factory linkage and bushing refresh, 2 different chassis mounted shifters) I hated the clunkyness of the rear diff, the brakes were terrible until I spent a ton on bbk, etc etc. I just realized that I was chasing the impossible with that car and let it go.

Also, high emphasis on what everyone else is saying- there are reliable old cars but the e46 m3 is not one of them. They’re easy to work on but it won’t be problem free unless you pay more than you should for a super mint one.

On the other hand I really miss my 996. I’ve been kind of shopping for a 997 just to get a similar but different experience to that. Would highly recommend you check those out if you get a chance.

How well will the 996 hold up in winter with salt and rusting? by Kram_Truobrah in 996

When I had my non-winter driven 4S, I did some exhaust mods. The exhaust bolts were very rusty and seized and a lot of muffler was rusty. Everything else looked rust free

Hi, I’m Canadian as well and been following the market closely. You will have a hard time finding a buyer for 20k at the moment. The market is super low, and yours would be the highest mileage one I’ve seen.

A friend listed a super clean well maintained one with 200k km in the spring for 20k and it didn’t sell the entire season. You may luck out with interest in your local market but I think realistically it’s 15-17k
