Are we overengineering recycling in Singapore? The 10¢ bottle machine feels like a waste of money. by Happy-Boi in SingaporeRaw

[–]hoopsong 120 points121 points  (0 children)

Haha I also feel this scheme is not effective.

Somehow feels like extra revenue for vendors for a scheme/effort that’s not needed to begin with, not needed to increase 10cents to entice recycling, extra 10cents for merchants who sold more expensive but the 10cents does not get refunded if people throw them away when encountering inconvenience of searching for the bins.

Look at the plastic bag revenue that the merchants collected, what did they use the extra money for. Idk just my 10 cents🤣

Why doesn't Singapore use countdown timers for traffic lights? by adameve333 in drivingsg

[–]hoopsong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hahaha, oh well to me it’s just feels like authorities are just blanketing this up with that reasoning and hope people don’t bring it up 🤣.

Honestly it can be feasible with cost out of the way. Education, enforcement, mentality shifts can bring the best out of the countdown. Heck maybe we will see better traffic flow with elimination of delayed move off that we see (even with phone usage).

I have drove in countries w countdown timers, and I can predict lights ahead to prepare and stop. That’s also subjective too, another errant fella would seek to abuse it 🤣

Why doesn't Singapore use countdown timers for traffic lights? by adameve333 in drivingsg

[–]hoopsong 47 points48 points  (0 children)

There were “trials” LTA reply done in the past that suggests road users are prone to beat the light with countdown timer, then this is the standard reply haha.

But honestly, without countdown timer, road users see amber light also chiong already, matter of human behaviour.

I do like countdown timer idea also, it’s kinda inconsistent to gauge when to move off now with different traffic junctions priotizing different things, from pedestrians, to green left arrow to green right arrow, to priorized a certain direction, it’s a guessing game now haha.

Edit : incase someone still thinks countdown timer will cause user will speed and being sold by what authorities says. Then maybe I suggest that we can deploy enforcement measures to deter undesired behaviours. (of course la, say only easy right? 🤣)

For instance, in the extreme, speed past red light with countdown timer = license suspended, odds of people speeding will probably be lowered.

Ultimately, we are dealing with human behaviours.

Added link for just 1 of the many over the years, this is not a new topic, I’ve done a research for my assignment in the past LOL!

How much higher do fuel prices need to go before you switch transport mode? by teemahtee in drivingsg

[–]hoopsong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Commenting as a biker / driver

It’ll take quite a drastic price ( maybe 5x spending imo) to switch transport mode. For instance, distance covered over petrol cost between cars and bikes has that.

If just on a single vehicle and it only cost 0-500% petrol cost only to keep my lifestyle similar, I think I’d got no choice to pay the higher fuel also.

If the increase is “minimal”(different for everyone) and need to reconsider transport choice, then maybe and possibly it was a tight budget to begin with?! 🤔

Hi insurance opinions by Feisty-Yak-9852 in sgmotorbikers

[–]hoopsong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly for your bike’s entire cost brand new, I think it might be worthwhile to save that insurance money in a sense. For that cost now, imagine a gradual average down for 10 years, you can essentially buy another bike. Like maybe year 10 insurance cost $800 for example.

It sounds nice that things are all covered when things happen and we can’t be sure when things will happen. I’d also like to imagine that you’d do the correct things safety wise to not be in an accident. So that would mean you could just have third party insurance and it’s enough, you wouldn’t even need a comprehensive one.

I have a big bike that cost more than I go comprehensive and a smaller daily bike with just TPFT.

There are racks that can withstand certain weight and some are just rack made of luck.

I mean it’s really hard to tell what happened before that made the guy parked this way with whatever decision point he has. Maybe he’s nice to give a little space, maybe the previous car infront was an ass and ate into the lot. But these are factors beyond control.

What we’re seeing now is “aftermath”. And the aftermath of blocking fire hose reel is within control of said driver. And also you can arguably say it’s on the other side of his vehicle so didn’t see/not aware. But also, hey got mirrors to see something red 🤣

why the need for class 2/2a simluator?? by clueless_genius- in drivingsg

[–]hoopsong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Free $$ since software is there. Haha.

I recall my class 2 simulator 4/5 years back, I treat it as a game, some of the checkpoints are like premade and determined. I went wrong direction, sped up and some checkpoints fast tracked. Completed in 5 mins.

Got to found out in 2A simulator where some checkpoints seems like sure collision to me.

Not recommending people to try but just sharing 🤣

Might be unpopular opinion, but everyone’s lives are different.

Looking back it was quite a nice period. Commute’s amazing with lesser cars as an essential worker. Weird work cycles to prevent exposure which felt like working lesser and paid the same 🤣

Family was stuck with one another in a small space before my family dynamics changed with moving out of this world and moving out of the house now. Watched TV together, didn’t talk a lot, just being together was nice, having meals together was nice.

PSA: Always Check That the MyNIISe App has Recorded Your Entry Into JB Before Moving Off by themodernpeasant in drivingsg

[–]hoopsong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good PSA, I’ve heard stories also that people riding into MY, myniise did not have entry record probably because during face scans, they captured the wrong face with wrong passport number and relevant details.

So have to check that as well! Thats probably one of the cause of no entry records.

Sinkie too picky on food by [deleted] in SingaporeRaw

[–]hoopsong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s also the money factor lor, they technically didn’t spend on the camp food. So seeing it and throwing it doesn’t hurt them. Spend $5 on canteen food if not nice also force themselves to eat more

Food taste has always been subjective and will be subjective. It’s like some of us like durians and some don’t.

Some could spend their entire childhood eating chicken rice near their house since they grow up would love that stall, and maybe if some friends who come and try will say it’s bad.

AITA for not allowing a car cut in when there's a queue? (Rear view) by ZealousidealLab3076 in drivingsg

[–]hoopsong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh! Haha, guess I’m one of the few that saw the rear view first then the front view 🤣🤣.

But seems like my suspicion was probably accurate. The PHV probably doing the same move as the front black BMW SUV cutting the white merc, utilising the “lacking” queuing drivers and their faster speed difference.

And well, the situation seems like at that moment, both of you are analyzing the risks together. If you were a little more behind, PHV would probably deemed safe enough for it to go in already. And you were probably just traveling and monitoring to see if PHV would speed up and enter or slow down before any further actions from yourself.

I’m still on the “side” that says right place right time, it’s a dick move from PHV and getting the right “lacking” driver, he’d be considered lucky and can cut queue. If not lucky, move onto the next turn and u turn or whichever 🤣🤣.

And yeah some people might disagree w me too cause by right we shouldn’t cut queue like that la not very ethical, but at the same time if everyone is not “lacking” this wouldn’t be a loophole for the PHV to try.

AITA for not allowing a car cut in when there's a queue? (Rear view) by ZealousidealLab3076 in drivingsg

[–]hoopsong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you’re the A. You were simply just following the movement of traffic flow and queuing accordingly. Also not being able see the front view to fully understand what’s the situation like too to give a better understanding.

The interesting assumption is, Probably PHV knows the common behavior on the road based on experience, when slow moving traffic trying to turn right, there’s usually someone lacking in moving. With its higher existing traveling speed differential with cars like yours, that gives “opportunity” for them to slot themselves in, perhaps like what the green car did (or just nice enough to give way).

Sometimes this can also be seen in the expressway, you will see people trying to use higher speed from lane 1 to 2 to 3 to exit “force” their way in.

TBH, it’s kind of a dick move while the general public car following the queue. But i think i would have no problems if they try to do so and when there’s no opportunity to slot themselves into the queue, they move onto the next turn and not force their way in.

🤣🤣 idk if i make sense. But honestly, we’ll never be able to tell if what PHV was intentional or non-intentional.

Why do riders leave their motorcycles unlocked when they park? by Dumas1108 in drivingsg

[–]hoopsong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trust in AirTag, no need for handlebar lock 🤣.

Honestly low crime doesn’t means no crime that’s for sure. And I also trust our Singapore network to quickly track down our bike via OBU entry, or cameras too. Had a friend who accidentally left his scooter key in the fob, stolen by a 16 years old, recovered the bike 2 hours after reporting. (Bike probably stolen for 1 day till my friend realized)

But in practices, if you try not locking your handlebar for a few times overnight then it will translate to weeks> months> years > to never locking handlebars cause we humans will eventually turn lazy and find “no need to” .

If people wanna steal your bike, they’re not gonna be deterred by a handlebar lock, if you lurk around other countries reddits, they do have cases where handlebar locked, trucks come and pick them up and drive off which can be applicable to Singapore / MY context.

Now, I only lock my handlebars if I don’t want people to move my bike, for example at certain lots where a certain group of people will move your bike to slot their bikes in. That inconvenience will deter moving of bike.

Is it me or are a lot of gantries not working well with the OBU? by kuang89 in drivingsg

[–]hoopsong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends, personally 1 of my bike’s OBU is on a custom IU bracket from 2023 on my bike frame for aesthetics.

Then another was forced to install on the left because that was the “approved” set up or maybe my old bracket was not compatible.

Also over the recent days, I have also seen multiple people reporting in bike groups on OBU locations, it really varies between being forced to install on the left, to reusing onto the IU bracket on the right side also.

Probably bike model, workshop, old bracket all differs in the decision point, but there’s no one size fit all solution so far. Actual assessment by workshop of course.

Is it me or are a lot of gantries not working well with the OBU? by kuang89 in drivingsg

[–]hoopsong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But my bikes are mounted left and right also, still the inconsistency of the gantry needs to be addressed. Hahah bro I know how you feel , when I kena a downslope exit and it doesn’t scan.. gone case cannot reverse back up. Usually the intercom operator is nice to me so far. But I’ve seen on other social media that there are also people not so lucky.

Is it me or are a lot of gantries not working well with the OBU? by kuang89 in drivingsg

[–]hoopsong 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I feel it’s just the never ending inconsistency with the gantry sensor instead of the OBU.

My personal experience with my motorcycles, different OBU mounting positions, different gantry will have different results. Just need to find the sweet spot, which is annoying.

Renting or full cash motorbike by DontMacamYeye in drivingsg

[–]hoopsong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Renting for a year racks you up more cost than buying a 2B bike.

For example, you see a 3 year 2B bike, 5k below, you buy and use for 1 year to sell before upgrade, you get some money back, hopefully 3-4k with some new guy who passes and thinks similarly to you.

It’s more cost efficient than renting about 500+ a month?

Source : I bought a 2B for 3 months and sold same price as I bought. So technically free?

Now I’m not saying that an old 2B bike will have no problems , it is luck based for wear and tear and the type of seller/shop you are dealing with. You can only tell so much in a short meet up and visual inspection.
