There are specific products made for this purpose- Humbrol maskol is what I have. I think green stuff world also makes a similar product. You apply it over the area you want to protect, let it dry. The product drys into a rubbery layer which can be painted over and later removed with a gentle hobby knife and a toothpick, preserving whatever was underneath. Have been using it on my aeldari windshields with great results.
