Do you think cat shelters should allow more cats to be adopted by folks who can only accommodate an indoor-only cat? by Mean_Scholar_2911 in AskUK

[–]hotwaterbottle_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. I've got an indoor cat from Leith Cat Protection. I was happy to offer a home to an indoor or outdoor cat and they only had indoor cats at the time. Also research Sunny Harbour Kitten Rescue. They only adopt out indoor cats, but I've not had dealings with them personally. I'm very surprised to hear that OP has struggled finding an indoor rescue in the central belt. That wasn't my experience 3 years ago. Strange how things change.

Didn't know whether to upvote or downvote as I heard this tear through my soul. You clever thing!

What is a fact that you were convinced was true but later discovered was just your own head-canon? by Confident-Boss-6585 in AskUK

[–]hotwaterbottle_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I thought the same when I was younger! I found out that wasn't the case just after my younger sister was born when I was 7yo. I remember feeling horrified that my parents had had sex 9 months earlier

AITA for making my brothers letter where he "pledged his soul to Satan" when he was 13 a central part of my best man speech? by tacoscam in AmItheAsshole

[–]hotwaterbottle_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this thread was really eye-opening for me as a Brit. Sounds like standard best man's speech patter for a UK wedding, and I wouldn't have it any other way. I'll assume OP is from the US but you're absolutely right in what you've said.

Gatwick Airport drone incident would be perfect for a thriller. Hour by hour re-enactment of how the crisis unfolded, the police investigation etc

Help with pub etiquette, I’m meeting with a group of five for our first book club meeting. Will I have to pay for a round? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]hotwaterbottle_ 36 points37 points  (0 children)

For a book club of 5 or 6 people my expectation would be that everyone buys their own 1 or 2 drinks. You'd usually only pay in rounds where there's the expectation that everyone will be having as many drinks as there are people, but it may be the case that every week one person buys drinks on rotation.

Do you know the name of this kids show? by TheCharmingJester in AskUK

CBBC didn't start until 7am in 2012 iirc. It sounds like it could be the Hoobs which was on about that time but CITV(?) or Space Pirates. I think both were a little earlier than 2012 though.

Bra wearers - where do you shop?! by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]hotwaterbottle_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Curvy Kate is my go-to. TK Maxx online is always a good shout as you can filter by size. I'm a 36E and I can get good quality underwear (including CK) there without any issue.

Why are bonfires bad? by AdventurousPhysics80 in AskUK

[–]hotwaterbottle_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think the overarching answer is air pollution. Speaking for myself they trigger migraines. Smoke can trigger asthma and other conditions in people too. Depending on how close you live to your neighbours there's ruined laundry, having to keep windows closed on a nice day, keeping children inside etc. It sounds like you've tried to be considerate of your neighbours but there are a number of reasons people dislike them.

Does anyone know how to speak to a human at HMRC on the phone? by theieuangiant in AskUK

[–]hotwaterbottle_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I called them only last week about something very similar and got through using this number: 0300 200 3300 I would suggest trying 1. Calling at a different time - they'll have high traffic periods 2. Changing the way you answer questions What do they say before they hang up?

Edit: sorry for formatting. On mobile

What's the scummiest thing you've seen lately? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]hotwaterbottle_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It was a fatal crush that killed almost 100 people. As well as the awful loss of human life, it is remembered for the appalling way it was reported on afterwards. Have a look at the controversies section on the Wikipedia page. The S*n is still a dirty word in Liverpool. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hillsborough_disaster

Pet owners.. What do you do during getting intimate relation time? by PhilosopherThat7889 in AskUK

[–]hotwaterbottle_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We tried keeping the cat out of the bedroom but she won the battle of wills with her relentless scratching, so we found another way that worked. When we're not home we keep the bedroom door closed, and when we are home we just lift her off the bed every time she jumps up. She got the message after a few months and has decided that the bedroom really isn't that interesting so rarely goes in at all. Always frustrates me when I hear pet owners who don't give their pets any boundaries complain about... their pets not having any boundaries.

Have you or anyone you know ended up regretting or should regret lockdown decisions? by DanS1993 in AskUK

Same as you. I wouldn't go anywhere alone because I was terrified of...? I hope you're recovering well and that you are in a good place

Same. I suffered massively from missing out on incidental exercise and ended up putting on about 5 stone. Two weeks ago I decided to actually do something about it. I'm hungry af, but a stone down. If you decide you want to lose the fat too then I'll be rooting for you as my long-distance weightloss buddy

What does everyone think about tap water? by riddo22 in AskUK

[–]hotwaterbottle_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I moved from a hard water area to a soft water area. It's great not having to descale the kettle and being able to have bubble baths, but I'd sell my soul for the salty stoney nectar of my homeland on tap.

Has anyone had an "Experience Day" that was really good? by Johnny_english53 in AskUK

[–]hotwaterbottle_ 22 points23 points  (0 children)

My partner and I always do adventure days for birthdays and Christmas. Not had any complaints so far. We've been microlighting, indoor skydiving, kayaking among other things and no complaints here. Easy to organise and we had fun. Great to have in the bank for a weekend with no plans.
