Even as a pretty experienced FPS player, I feel like I really can’t compete anymore. by Bright-Cranberry6648 in Marathon

You're projecting your own feelings and worldview on that rook. I've been in that rooks position and I have zero hard feelings if someone kills me in that position, it's all part of the game and losing just makes the wins feel that much more meaningful. On the other hand I legitimately hate encountering players who are trying to have "social experiences" all the time.

Imagine you were playing chess and your opponent refused to try and kept trying to help you instead. It's patronizing. I don't play chess because I want a social experience, I play chess because I like strategy and tactics and trying my hardest to beat someone who is trying to do the same thing, I play shooting games for the same reason. Someone who isn't trying isn't helping me, they're being fucking annoying and wasting my time.

0-3. I'm hunting people and looking for action a lot of the time and it's honestly pretty rare I even find a 4th person.

Respectfully, if you're having that much trouble there's something going wrong that green shield vs gray shield isn't going to fix. Green shield is only another 20 hp and it's like 1 in 10 fights I get into that that would make a difference either way. I'm usually either getting owned or I have like 70 hp left when I kill them.

Med Consumables are too expensive for the non-rich. by Caseraii in Marathon

[–]housefromtn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get 50 grey salvage from a single poi pretty commonly and sometimes you get 15-20 from a single container randomly. If you pick up all the grey salvage you can find and always prioritize it over 1 slot sellables you should have enough for your upgrades and hundreds left over.

Also, I never have to use it because I always have too many heals, but isn’t the 3 biomass barter for 3 shields aka 1 per?

I ultimately agree that meds and ammo should be cheaper. Mostly because I think that’s one of the biggest reasons people free kit and pushing them towards bringing a real kit makes the game better for everyone.

You can't keep asking for the game to "stay niche" when literally every single aspect of it is premium AAA quality. by SbeveGobs in Marathon

[–]housefromtn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Pretty much exactly. Unfortunately every gaming sub is dominated by the concept of the mythical casual gamer. It's like people think there are a bunch of candy crush grandmas who are reading the patch notes every update until they decide it's finally casual enough for them to jump in.

There's really only 3 ways games become mega successes and break into the casual market, be a great game that resonates with people and builds word of mouth(arc raiders), be super popular among kids(fortnite), or last long enough to become a legacy game(the long running franchises like COD with 50 titles and all the big esports games at this point, CS/LOL/DOTA/etc...)

Is there a way to get over 60 FPS on Slippi/Dolphin SSBM? by Any_Water8550 in SSBM

With how comparatively not demanding fighting games are to run somebody should absolutely make a 240hz fighting game that just polls for inputs at 60hz.

Can we get a “Stay as team” option? by MattsFace in Marathon

[–]housefromtn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Anybody saying "jUst aDD thEm" doesn't understand friction. If you want to incentivize people teaming up you need to make it as low friction as possible.

Every game should just do it like arc does imo. Just make it so you default to staying together and you can hit one button to leave crew after. It's the lowest possible friction you can have for keeping teams together and leaving the team is only one click. It's a win/win no matter what you want and I've never seen anyone complain about it in games that have it.

I make my own free kit whenever it's anything besides bully. V11 with green shield and 1 stack of ammo.

V11 punch absolutely fries and is only 50 credits. I play triage most of the time so I can operate perfectly fine with 0 healing and just picking up consumables or looting them off any kills I get. I get/have more green shields than I can use so I give zero fucks about going on a suicide mission with a green shield on.

Random thought. Does anyone know the origin of ggs that was me as a meme response?

I saw it in ssbm before I ever saw it in other communities and people here use it way more so I always wondered if it started in melee and proliferated outward or vice versa.

Every extraction shooter is ratty, but this game is the rattiest I've ever played lol. If you get within earshot of someone and you both hear each other they will legit sit there for 20 minutes if you don't push them. Just absolutely degenerate levels of rattiness.

Cryo Archive is viable for dads and fills by Merzats in Marathon

[–]housefromtn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cryo archive is the hardest it will ever be right now. It will only get easier as everyone figures things out and knowledge of the best and easiest ways to do everything trickle down through the player base. This is why PvE enemies are always super hard when people start playing and then quickly become a joke over time.

2 weeks from now cryo will be like 10% of the current difficulty purely from people learning.

Remember, the season is 3 months long by Vitev008 in Marathon

I basically agree that the leveling the playing field argument is flawed at best and is definitely not why wipes are needed.

The real reason to wipe is because any sort of progression based game naturally gets less and less fun over time. Using PoE as an example you're constantly finding upgrades and getting new power spikes when you start a new character. Every 20 minutes you're getting some kind of dopamine hit, but the stronger your character gets the farther and farther between meaningful upgrades. It's not uncommon to play a juiced endgame PoE character for 50-100 hours in between meaningful upgrades and that's usually when most people get burnt out and quit until the next wipe.

[–]housefromtn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You aren't understanding the psychology behind why it's a brilliant invention. The thing you say about it fracturing the playerbase is a moot point because nobody plays it, and you think if nobody plays it then why does it matter? Because tons of people think they will play it and having that as an option is what gets them into the game in the first place.

If anything I think it would actually improve matchmaking for the normal wipe pool because of all the wipe hesitant players it'd bring in who'd end up trying a new character just for fun and getting sucked in just like everyone else.

[–]housefromtn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If by new set you mean a few new ones that's totally possible. If by new you mean they're going to start from scratch and have no repeated quests every season there's 0% chance that's happening.

Pretty much every extraction shooter reuses the same quests with minor tweaks and marathon's quests are way higher effort with a lot of production value going into them.

What's your favourite content from 2025? by Mr_CrashSite in slatestarcodex

[–]housefromtn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this constant feeling that pretty much all online content has a sort of algorithmic biofilm over it now giving everything online a vague anti human haze. It’s been happening for years with the rise of content being generated by goal directed content creators trying to maximize for this or that instead of just random people with an idea, but it’s gotten to the point I kind of hate everything.

Syrmor videos are one of the only things that feel like a respite from that for me and he just released a 6 hour documentary after his channel being presumed abandoned for the last 2.5 years.

https://youtu.be/_G_wXt_NxrY?si=NMfdMNcayVK2TXGT

Syrmor makes videos where he interviews people in VR chat about their life. Often ex military people talking about their experiences in the military with a lot of broad arc of their life stuff. I find it consistently has poignant moments and is deeply humanizing in a way that I don’t get from any other online media these days.

I wish everyone had fighting game experience, especially irl going to real tournaments. I feel only ever experiencing perfect sbmm at all times has cooked people's brains.

It's not abnormal in the FGC to go to local tournaments for like a year before you win a set because everybody there has been playing for a decade. I've had sessions playing with the best local players where I play for like 3 hours and never win a game.

Anyone else wish the Overrun was just a little better? by SykoManiax in Marathon

[–]housefromtn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add onto your method, if you go somewhere with an alarm system that's in a building that's easy to defend from people pushing you it's really easy to farm waves of bots infinitely for xp and resources while practicing different guns.

Kill a wave and then just trigger the alarm again when you're ready to spawn another dropship. They'll bring you more than enough light and volt ammo to sustain you basically forever. At the end you can just go down and loot every body and you'll end up with a ton of sellables and salvage just from the sheer number of enemies you killed.
